It's a little dry, as might be expected from a book written in the 17th century and translated to English some time later, yet still distant from the present.Still, the book itself was informative not just for the explicitly described views on demonology, but also for the implicit depiction of the context of its writing. In fact the latter I found more fascinating, as many of the authors and authority figures referenced were indeed real, historical figures and can be read about or researched separately.The author takes great care to reiterate frequently that he means no offense or disrespect to the church or its favored scholars, and he leaves any salacious bits in Latin, presumably to obscure their content from readers who may be of a less high-minded disposition.If you can't discern Latin you'll need a translator for some passages, but other than that it's plain and easy to follow.

I am a huge fan of Tarl Warwick's political commentary but his true talent is in his studies of the Occult. Prior to following his YouTube channel on politics (which also has lots of Occult videos), I knew very little of the Occult. By watching a number of his educational videos I have gained a huge interest and this was his first work I ordered and I have to tell you, I was not disappointed whatsoever! He is charismatic and his writing is just as good as his verbal abilities of conveying messages and ideas.This work is a modern translation from an 1870s grimoire by a French scholar, Isidore Liseaux. I have personally read hundreds of translated works from Dostoevsky to the Hindu Rig Veda. Reading many of those translated and edited classics, the message gets lost and it's translations and edits are antiquated. That is not the case with Warwick's edition of Liseaux's "Demonality Incubi and Succubi". In the forward he clearly communicates the idea of the work and explains his edits and adjustments he made. It is very easy to read, even to a newcomer of the Occult like myself. I've known a little about the Inucbi and Succubi from a medieval sexuality course I took in university and heard about these demons being blamed for infideilities and midnight emissions however prior to reading this work I didn't know the details of how this is done! I did not know about how the demon has to control a host body (corpse) to commit these actions and the fact they do it out of lust and mean no ill will to the recipient (as long as they don't resist). I was also unaware of the medieval view that these two demons are in fact higher beings than humans and on a similar level of angels and other celestial beings.As of the quality the book is nicely bound and the covers are a matte black that look and feel so cool in your hands as you're reading this! I love the medieval style artwork on the cover with the corner trims and the writing inside is easy to read. My only complaint is the lack of titles on the spine however this work is rather short. I intend on collecting more of his works and would like to have them all of a shelf together but that's just me. My only complaint bears little on how great the quality of the work is both literary and physically.Warwick has done a great job meticulously translating and editing this underrated piece of Demonology. It is a must have! If you look around on Amazon there are very few Occult works and most have negative to mixed reviews but if you read the reviews of all of Warwick's other works he is truly a single man powerhouse of Occult literature! There are no other authors, editors, or translators worth reading from but Tarl Warwick. Warwick is making Occult literature great again!

Much of the text is in English. However many random sentences will be in latin. This is an incomplete translation. Apparently this was intentional and by design of the original translator. Kinda lame, but that's a personal preference.This review was edited and score increased as a recognition of my own personal bias. It was corrected to present a fair and balanced review of the content itself as opposed to my own annoyance at what I erroneously believed to be incompetence or laziness on the part of the translator, Tarl Warwick.

Not worth it. Personally did not enjoy, sticks way too close to Christian archetypes. Did not help nor did I gain information or learn whatever I was seeking.

The translation seems to be well done, but some words don't have a English definition so you have to be familiar with some Latin or Canon terminology. Definitely written by a priest who took his work quite seriously and was writing all of this in a very literal sense. There are several instances where he share with us his own eye-witness accounts of dealings with the supernatural. Makes a good read for someone interested in Catholic Demonology. Found it it hilarious when Ameno called Martin Luther the offspring of an Incubus but given the schism in the church at the time due to Luther it makes sense he would refer to him as the son of a demon.

The first book I have read on the subject, which led me to another book. Knowledgeable, a good starting point.

A well-done translation of some older ideas.

An essential book in English about the Sikhs. Be aware however that this a history of the Sikh community from its origins, rather than an overall look at the Sikh religion. Its coverage of doctrine and practice is thinner than might be expected. Not surprisingly, the author concentrates on Sikh history in the Punjab and Delhi. Be prepared for plenty of appalling violence and gore! There is also lots of discussion about modern Indian politics and sectarian issues that concern Indian Sikhs, which may be of limited interest to some readers (but read this anyway).Anyone planning to visit Amritsar will benefit greatly from having read this book; it will indeed transform one's experience of the Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) and its surrounding complex.Sikhism is expanding. It is said to have surpassed Judaism as the fifth largest world religion, and there is a growing number of non-Indian Sikhs. We need a good, modern general survey in English about the religion and its individualistic followers. In the meantime, this book is a great place to start reading about the Sikhs. Guru Nanak, guide us!

The detail of the research is incredible. The bibliography and the additional reading list are well researched. I read this to get a chronological perspective of the history and the book does a great job. I personally experienced the final parts of the book and I agree with the data and the conclusions. I am a Jat Sikh and the book accurately portrays the class divide that is prevalent in the Sikhs. Great job Patwant Singh.

I found this book to be extremely informative. It provides a historic overview of the Sikh religion and culture. The author tells of both triumphs and failures in a clear manner. General Sikh beliefs and values are explained. He also provides insight into how religion & politics were mixed and used in the creation of Pakistan and an independent India after British colonial rule. The author, a Sikh himself, is not a propagandist and while very proud of his faith & culture, will admit to both past & ongoing issues within the Sikh community. He also avoids disrepecting other faiths and cultures.

Patwant Singh provides a thumbnail of Sikh religious and political developments from the 15th century to the present. I found the last two chapters particularly instructive given America's current Middle East challenges. The resentment created by colonial powers on indigenous societies and the irresistible urge for fledgling democracies to abuse state powers are amply described. A glossary of Indian terms, which were adequately explained for an English reading audience within the text would have been helpful.

Very detailed Sikh events especially between 1700 and 1947 year. Unfortunately it did not continue into the 21st century. It is written as a research scholar rather than a preacher.

A must for every Sikh and for folks who are interested in Religion studies. Provides basic principles of Sikhism especially the message of Universal Brotherhood and equality of woman and man.

Great book and especially the earlier parts.

Very well written, easy to read, concise. Don't expect a neutral opinion of the Sikhs from another Sikh, though, and Mr Singh is somewhat bitter

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Isa Chandra Moskowitz began her vegan cooking journey over two decades ago. In 2003, she created the Post Punk Kitchen community access TV show to give vegans something to watch. Since then, she has authored and co-authored several vegan cookbooks, including Veganomicon and Isa Does It. Had purchased the original version of this cookbook and it collected dust (primarily bc I lived in Isa Does It --another AWESOME cookbook btw). Then at a brick n mortor I picked up the 10th Anniversary edition with pictures. I've made several dishes in the short time I've had it (why oh why did I not try the original book before now? *slaps forehead*)Isa makes it fun to try new ingredients (I am madly in love with lemongrass now!) and the outcome of the recipes have always been amazing. (Ok I confess to loving the flavor of the lemon cookies but the amount of coconut oil makes me ill-- as my body doesn't tolerate heavily oiled/buttered foods well anymore).The Lemongrass with Mock Duck soup was incredible! Even my persnickety-narcissistic-superior-disordered grandmother enjoyed the corn chowder and stuffed bell pepper (and then she tried her hand at her own corn chowder to one-up me and I found hers in the sink! Hahaha thank you Isa!)I think I literally own every single one of Isa (& Terry Hope Romeros) cookbooks except the Pies and I think one other. I've LOVED Isa Does it and every time at the bookstore tell other vegans to buy up each of her books and don't look back.I enjoy learning. I enjoy finding new ingredients and will try most anything once and fully expect the first time through, a recipe takes more time because it's new. I plan accordingly. If I remake something again (& again) that's says something. When I remake and double a recipe-It's amazing!The pic attached is the first pass of recipes I want to try. I sit and decide my weekly menu then make my grocery list accordingly. I watch (& know) sales (cycles) to make buying many new pantry items affordable. As shopping different stores, I get an idea who has what and prices so I know when/where to make it affordable. I also group recipes such as the ones containing lemongrass when I stop at my local Asian store and buy a large quantity of fresh lemongrass (the tube is all I could find at regular stores). Same with making seitan. Since one batch makes enough for 3 recipes of something I either freeze them (one sliced or chopped and one strips in broth) and save remaining broth in large ice cube trays (= 1/2 c each cube) for other beef-flavored type needs instead of expensive bullion.I also have a well stocked pantry, freezer, spice rack and fridge. It's taken me about 2 years to learn what needs to be there all the time and what I should only buy when a certain recipe is cooked. Thank you Isa for your contributions to flavor, expanding my horizons literally to the universe, and making being a vegan totally cool. You (punk) rock!

I loved this book! I'm an avid cook and vegan and have been cooking from cookbooks for over 25 years. Over a year, I made a lot of recipes in this book (and am currently going through Frugal Vegan and am nearly done). My favorite recipes from VWAV are the tofu scramble, tempeh and white bean sausage patties, fronch toast, chickpea and rice soup with a little kale, tempeh reuben, brussels sprouts fried rice, garlicky kale and tahini dressing, ALL of the pizza recipes (yes all), BLT mac & cheese, horseradish and coriander-crusted tofu, revolutionary spanish omelette, deluxe cocoa brownies and raspberry blackout cake with ganache.To me, what makes a good recipe is whether it has been tested, how simple (to follow) it is and whether it has a shorter list of ingredients. For these reasons alone, I think this is an excellent cookbook. I get so aggravated with super-nested recipes (recipes within recipes within recipes). Who has time for that?Since it is the 10th anniversary edition, some things have been revamped. I have both editions and appreciate the food photography in the new edition. Since food photography in print is expensive and Moskowitz's cookbooks have grown around the Post-Punk Kitchen blog and forum that she has shared with Terry Hope Romero, you may find some of these recipes there. The Kindle version of the book is just as good as the paper cover.Like a lot of good cookbooks, it begins with a pantry essentials list. The only items in the list that I would consider "specialty" are arrow root powder, liquid aminos, tapioca flour and nutritional yeast. Since I am writing this review on Amazon, readers can easily order from Amazon. These things are pretty common and I would say are essential to the recipes. For everything else, you can find in a non-vegan kitchen.I also recommend Moskowitz's other cookbooks "Isa Does It" and "Superfun Times Holiday Vegan Cookbook". I've cooked my way through Isa Does It and go back to making many of those recipes over again.

I use this cookbook constantly! It would be a great place to start if you're new to vegan cooking. I usually skip the info in the front of cookbooks, but it's one of the best parts of this book. And of course every single recipe is great and easy to customize to your own liking.

This cookbook is an invaluable part of my cookbook collection, and I’m not even strictly vegan. What the author has done is create cheap, tasty meals that everyone can appreciate, whether or not they’re following a lifestyle free from animal products. She is a no-nonsense chef, and her recipes reflect this lack of pretense — they’re written accessibly and with an he towards common cooking pitfalls, including a lack of experience. I own nearly all of her cookbooks (again, I’m not even vegan!), and while it would be difficult to choose only one to keep if I had to get rid of all the others, this would be the one I’d refuse to let go of.My similarly non-vegan husband requests the chocolate raspberry cake from VWAV every year for his birthday, and Isa’s pizza crust is my go-to.

Isa's books are amazing. I have a LOT of veggie cookbooks, and hers are by far the best. Her recipes are easy, straightforward, and every one I've made has come out better than expected. Even my fussy kids love them. Isa is funny, too, which makes it even better. Highly recommended!!

recipes are pretty meh so far (to be fair, I have only tried three) Sometimes list ingredients then not mentioned in recipe. A little gimmicky maybe, I don't know, just not too impressed. If you have been vegan for a while and have a modicum of cooking skills, I recommend Vegan Richa's Indian Kitchen, or any of her others.

one of the best books. I even visited the island this past week where it all took place. That made it all come to life. I just wish I had been able to meet the author. I did meet one of his former students that was attending the school while he was there. She was at the restaurant where our boat docked on the island.

I have read most of Pat's books, except this first one. I felt "The Water is Wide" was amazing, truly a great first 'virgin" book written by a young man who had no idea how far his influence would travel. Pat showed his great talent early on with his descriptive way of sharing his experiences, his views on life and the people who crossed his path. His impact on the children of Yamacraw Island was immense. To work with children whose circumstances were so grim proved to be quite a shock, language skills were absent, reading non-existent, with some having not even the most rudimentary speaking skills. Pat took it upon himself to find unconventional teaching methods to reach them was not welcome from the "system" in place there. Being so isolated prevented them from learning even the most basic and elementary standards, and Pat creatively developed ways to gain their attention and interest, and provided them with experiences that they would never forget. The perseverance Pat showed in hanging in there, despite working against all odds, i.e., the "administration", the transportation to the island by boat which in itself, was a great challenge, and the conditions there that were horrendous, was life-changing not only for the "students" but for the people of Yamacraw Island. I felt this book proved that Pat Conroy was always born to be a writer, born to change lives, and open doors to the beauty of life that can be found even in a place like Yamacraw Island.

As a former teacher in a very poor county in North Carolina just a few years after Conroy's experience, I related to this book in the first few pages. I am a lover of "all things Pat Conroy", and this one did not disappoint. His writing is beautifully poignant, sometimes invoking laughter, sometimes tears, but always sincere and believable. The challenges he faced defy reason in more ways than one, but his undaunted spirit prevailed. If you are a teacher, and think you've had a bad day/year, put this on your reading list. How would you have faced this challenge? I'd hope with the same tenacity in the face of circumstances as well as the school administration. The love he had for his challenged students shines through and your admiration for him will jump up several notches by the time you finish this touching story.

I grew up in a very small town in Missouri during part of my childhood. That little patch of land had one cotton gin, cotton fields that surrounded everything with dirt roads and ditches alongside them. Having moved from near Pittsburgh to be there, I was, in the estimation of my teachers, advanced in my learning and skills. This was sixth grade, mind you, so I had about as much intelligence as most of the kids in my previous school.Living there, I got a good picture of what it was like associating with children that weren't as academically challenged as I had been. In fact, it was at first very complimentary to hear I was an excellent pupil, but after a time, I really wanted less attention, to fit in with my friends, who were mostly boys that thought the greatest achievement was the number of swats given by the gym coach they accumulated over the course of the semester.What life was like outside of class was hard work in my grandfather's scrap yard, hunting, and learning the skills needed to excel as a country boy: how to hone my knife, how to tell what kind of metal I was holding in my hand -- I always carried a magnet -- how to clean a shotgun and make fishing sinkers from molds into which we poured molten lead. So, why was there any need for anymore education than to learn to add, subtract and read reasonably well?That's how I view Yamacraw. Just what was it those children needed to survive in the environment they were accustomed? Not much. To advance, they had to have experiences and knowledge that created other thoughts, experiences and dreams. And that is exactly what Pat Conroy took to their island, the map to a new life full of more insight than they could have ever thought possible. Plus, he did it in the most extraordinary ways with field trips, slides and movies that were never before used, just stashed away in a seldom opened closet. Seeing those tools, Mr. Conrack knew just what to do. With whatever he had, he made use of it, and always, in his most amazing speeches turned experiences into learning. I envy that talent.So, if you want to read a book that will both entertain and teach, as well as give you a few good laughs, read this book, then go on to read even more of this brilliant writer's books, for he was, and still is, an American treasure.

If you are a nurse you will appreciate Ms. Brown's book. A realistic look at a 12 hour nursing shift, hers in an oncology ward, but with a few simple changes could be on any ward. Truthful in its reality (no bathroom break I noticed....not unusual where I work! ) a 30 min lunch break in 12 hours? Ha! Maybe every other day! I not only loved her honest approach to telling it like it is within the world of nursing, (all those damned interruptions when you are trying to give out meds!) but she's not afraid to show her compassionate side too, following up on transferred or dischatged patients. If you want to be a nurse, are a nurse, or just want to see how a nurse's day REALLY looks like, then I highly recommend this read. If you already belong to the sisterhood, reading this book will let you will rest assured knowing someone else has crazy work days too. If you've never walked a mile in nursing shoes, this book will let you try on a pair for size to see if nursing is a good fit. Ms. Brown surely proves that technology, brains and compassion DO belong together, and she has them all.

I am an RN, BSN who has retired, but who still is always interested in nursing and hospitals. Theresa Brown, RN, is an amazing woman who, after already working as a UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR, decided to become a nurse. First I thought she might be crazy because I know how demanding a job nursing is, but she is an example of a nurse who excels at her difficult profession and has lived to write about it!! When I was a hospital, bedside nurse in the late '70's and '80's, my job was SO DIFFERENT from what Nursing is today. Today nurses are responsible for only the sickest of the sick, and the skill set of nurses has sky-rocketed. On the other hand, patients can be still the same as the past-wonderful, kind, compliant, helpful, to angry, demanding, confused, agitated, and completely dependent. I, too, as the author, was an oncology RN on a floor like hers, which also had regular medical patients. I might come to my shift, assigned to a patient who was dying, without either of us knowing each other. She tells her story of four patients over 12-hour shifts but also expands into giving people a lot of information about our healthcare system today. This book was so interesting, I read it in a day and wished it was 10 times as long!! Please, if you are or have been or will be (almost all of us) a patient or the loved one of a patient, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK!! It shows how important nurses are to you in your time of need-we nurses are there, watching over you, for our shifts, be them 8-12 hours. The doctors see you for 5-10 minutes. Most hospitals are not teaching hospitals, so a hospitalist doctor watches over you for a few minutes. The nurses are there ALL OF THE TIME, trying to balance unbelievable tasks and priorities. And by large, we do TRULY CARE about you. But nurses are constantly being made to do more and more with less and less numbers, all so the hospitals can make a profit or just stay open! Thank you for reading all of this.

This book brought much more insight into the difficult workload that both doctors and nurses have. Yet , they keep an upbeat demeanor and a supportive hand and touch. If you're a nurse and you have a spouse or friend who can't quite grasp what we do this book was written for you. Nurses, especially ontology nurses, don't read this on your day off.

Time order words – first, then, next, finally – are the building blocks for young writers. These words help new voices create sentences that move the story along in a purposeful and linear, if not especially inventive or interesting, way. Author Theresa Brown uses this technique – a lot - in her new book, “The Shift,” even though she’s not a first-time writer. The ‘this-and-that’ style becomes predictive. We know that when she’s describing patient care, she’s going to give us all the steps required to discharge her duties. It’s an excellent technique if she were writing a technical nursing manual instead of a patient-centered story about life and death on the oncology ward of a busy metropolitan hospital.This writerly habit even defines her world outside the hospital, so we know her tick-tock sentences aren’t her way of conveying the mind-numbing sameness of nursing care even if the patients on whom those redundant skills are applied are different. For example: “I unlock my bike, put on my helmet, snap the strap of my bag across my chest, and pull on my gloves.” There are hundreds of these kind of constructions in this 272-page book. After a while, I felt like I was confident enough in my reading-acquired nursing skills to skip ahead.Practice makes permanent, in both nursing and writing. As a patient, I want her skills born of deliberate practice; as a reader, not so much. A decent story that gets dragged down by tedious technique.

As a nurse I can really relate to the craziness a floor nurse must overcome to get through a shift. There are never enough hours in a shift to get all the work done and the unexpected interruptions are extremely frustrating. Patients think nurses don't care but we really do, we just don't have the time to show it like we would like to. Extremely well written and a unique perspective on the life of a floor nurse. A good example of why the high burn out rate. All hospital nurses should be admired for their dedication and perseverance in a very difficult job.

My 1 year old daughter is obsessed with this book. It keeps her occupied for about an hour at a time.Some of the flaps in the book are a little flimsy and easy to rip out but I have repaired them with tape and they're holding up perfectly. I didn't expect anything different, it's less related to the quality of the book and more related to my "aggressive reader".Would recommend in a heartbeat and will buy again if my daughter destroys this copy completely.

This book is fantastic. My one year old loves it! We go through it several times a day. He may not understand all of it, but I simplify it and ask him to 'open the door' 'open the window' 'lift the square' etc, and he loves opening the flaps! I love how big it is and my son is genuinely intrigued by the different pages -- we look at colors, shapes, and I point out common items/words. I think an older toddler would benefit even more from it (ABCs, opposites, counting, etc) and be highly entertained by all this book has to offer. I highly recommend it!

This book is top of the line. Very colorful and bright, and there's so much to do! It takes me and my 1yr old forever to go through it because there are so many little "doors" to open. My son just loves seeing what's hiding behind the next door. The construction of the book is very hardy, the doors need a little more care when opening but it doesn't change the quality this book has. This book also has some great educational perks (colors, ABC's, shapes). It's very fun for a toddler and would definitely make a great gift.

This has provided hours of fun for our 10 month old son. He loves to lift the flaps - and eventually rip them off. Well worth a few lost flaps, given how much he loves and enjoys it! We have had this for 3 months and still are enjoying it.

A great quality lift-the-flap book - perfect for toddlers. I was surpised by the size of this when it came - it's much larger than I expected (a bit bigger than an 8.5x11 piece of paper) - but if you read the full description details you probably won't be as surprised as I was.The flaps are very sturdy - much more so than any other lift-the-flap book we have...in fact this is the only one that has all the flaps. I bought two other ones - the "Where is Baby's Belly Button" one - we've had it less than a week & we're missing a flap already...The only kinda annoying thing for me was opening all the flaps. It comes with the flaps not quite 100% cut open yet - it's kinda like if you've ever had one of those christmas avent chocolate calendar things - where you have to open each flap to get to the candy inside - the flaps are basically just like that (well - to be honest - I haven't had one of those in well over a decade...so I'm assuming they're the same now as they were then...). But it's not a huge deal - you do have to be a bit careful with one or two them though when doing this just cause they're odd shaped flaps (like the triangle kite one).But my son loves this - and he's still not found all the flaps yet (he won't let me show him...I'm not allowed to help him - or really even touch this book when he's playing with it...I have to read from afar as he opens each flap). I highly recommend this to anyone frustrated with a lift-the-flap book that no longer has any flaps.

We first read this book at the library where many of the flaps were damaged or missing, and my 22 month old *loved* it. It features your favorite Sesame Street characters, bright colors, numbers, shapes, letters, and FLAPS! What could be better? There isn't really a story, the book is more about identifying numbers/letters/shapes and, of course, lifting the flaps.While it is an oversized board book, some of the flaps are smaller, and this is a book that is best for toddlers who have learned to be gentle with their books. I expect many kids reach this stage between 18 months and 2 years, but you know your child best. If you are considering it as a gift for a Sesame Street loving child, I think 2-3 years would be a great age.

My son has been playing with this for months now. He loves it and has grown with his speech and everything through this. He loves to open the holes and name what’s inside each one. Yes they can rip off... but hello, it’s a kids paper pop up book! So when I read reviews with complaints about that I think it’s crazy. Tell the child they can’t pull it. If they do and it rips, whatever it’s a toy and it’s made of paper/cardboard. Ours has held up great with MANY uses. I’d recommend this for sure! The joy my child gets from this is worth it for sure!

My son loves this book, the pages are very detailed and we spend a lot of time on just one page. We got this for him when he was 18 months old and he loved when I would read it with him. Now that he's 2 he can follow along with all the letters and numbers on his own. He can spend a lot of time "reading" this book on his own.The biggest con is that he has pulled some flaps off, but that is not the books fault! I should have supervised him better when he was going through a phase :). I will replace the book eventually so he has a full copy again.
