From the Back Cover

One of the nation’s chief architecture critics reveals how the environments we build profoundly shape our feelings, memories, and well-being, and argues that we must harness this knowledge to construct a world better suited to human experience.Taking an illuminating journey around the globe and into the brain, Welcome to Your World reveals that the built environment and its design matter far more than anybody, even architects, ever thought they did. Using cutting-edge research in cognitive neuroscience and environmental psychology, Sarah Williams Goldhagen articulates the ways in which a room, a building, or a city square affects us, and details our reactions to form, pattern, light, color, sound, texture, and more.Expanding on these concepts, she walks us through some of the world’s best and worst buildings, landscapes, and cityscapes, from the Parthenon in Athens to One World Trade Center in Manhattan, from Amiens Cathedral in France to Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial, from the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris to the 798 Art District in Beijing. Supported by overwhelming evidence and clear-eyed analysis, she concludes that societies must reconsider what and how they build. Put simply: it requires the same resources to construct a building that impairs our capabilities as it does to erect a structure that enhances them. Ultimately the stakes—individual need and collective welfare—could not be higher.Erudite, wise, and beautifully illustrated with more than 150 color photographs, Welcome to Your World is a vital, eye-opening guide to the spaces we inhabit, physically and mentally, and a clarion call to design for human experience.

Welcome to your world is an intriguing book which explores how the environment we build around us affects us, as well as how we navigate that reality. What IÂ find really fascinating is how the author integrates cognitive and bodily experiences into the book so that we're not just looking at the environment, but also our own place in space. If you want to understand space, building designs, or how you navigate the world around this is an excellent book to read because it provides you a way to look at your environment from a unique perspective and consider how you situate yourself in the world around you as well as how bring good design into your life and improve your circumstances as a result.

Really compelling overview of the ways our homes and urban settings are affecting us. What I found most interesting is the author's ability to tackle this topic from so many different angles: cognitive psychology, neuroscience, real estate, urban planning, politics, and architecture. It's a great introductory book, if you're interested in the topic of how poor public planning is affecting our lives. I suggest reading it after "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" by Jane Jacobs. Goldhagen's book doesn't give an answer to the problem. Rather, she provides an extremely brilliant and thoughtful rewording of the original question. We still have lots of work to do.

Well, well, well! It had to happen. Sarah Goldhagen has linked the intuitive and often speculative notions of the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of architectural aesthetic experience with the latest neuroscience research that supports what only the most sensitive and lucid designers know. Namely that there is a great chain of relational structures in architectural experience that must be presenced to make possible the fusion of the cognitive, valuational, and sensory modes of our being that produces the immersive experience that we call aesthetic. Goldhagen’ s research clearly articulates why architecture is not a building but an adjective we use to describe such immersive experiences.Coy HowardProfessorSouthern California Institute of ArchitectureAuthor of ‘The Thickening of Time’

Words have finally been put to everything that we always knew but couldn’t quite articulate. Many “ah ha” moments and “well of course we can do better” realizations lace easily comprehensible reviews of cities, buildings, and architects who do it right by reconnecting humans with nature.

Welcome To Your World is an excellent study in the environment around us - how it effects us, how it shapes our feelings, how it impacts our wellbeing. You don't have to be an architect, designer or builder to understand the incredibly interesting examples that Mrs. Goldhagen clearly illustrates (often with fantastic pictures). She dives deep into both well and poorly designed environments, both uniquely interesting in how they positively and negatively impact everything from feelings to energy to recovery time in sick patients. A very interesting and informative read!

Well written with great explanations of design and functionality. I wish I had of read this book prior to employing an architect on my latest project. It obviously is worthwhile to seek out the best and ensure they have the capability to deliver what Sarah Williams Goldhagen suggests.

This brilliant book opened my eyes to the world around me and helped me see my environment in new ways. Goldhagen is advocating for better design, design that is more human-centric and connects us to nature. She's a former professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design and a well-known architecture critic, and she has spent her entire life trying to understand the process by which the built environment affects us emotionally and psychologically. Here she is writing for a general audience, and sharing what she has learned during a lifetime of interdisciplinary exploration with people like me, who do not have a background in art or design or architecture, but who are curious to learn about how our surroundings affect our lives. Imagine the treat of being able to go on a tour of the world with a guide who is so smart, insightful, entertaining, witty, deeply informed, and passionate about her subject. For what it's worth, this is also a beautifully produced book with gorgeous illustrations. It's a book I will save and treasure, and go back to again and again. I wish I could give it more stars.

I had high expectations about this book because it was mentioned in an extremely interesting article about architecture in The New Yorker.I found it boring, very vague and abstract, almost spiritual. I hate using that word but I had the impression I was reading a book about self help instead of a book about architecture.I was expecting something more focused on architecture and full of examples, I got a book about neuropsychology and cognitive science instead.

I'm a school social worker at a juvenile detention center, and I commonly bring books (usually high quality YA Lit) for the kids to read when they are not in school. Many of our kids are not great students and few were readers before they came here, but many kids read for pleasure now. Last year alone, well over 30 kids read "The Hate U Give" and many were eagerly awaiting "On the Come Up." When I brought it to school last week, many of the kids' faces absolutely lit up, and they are now engrossed in the novel. When I arrived today, one of the kids told me he was done and asked for "another Angie Thomas book." I laughed and explained he's already read them, so I'd have to bring him something else.In any case, it is another fantastic, relatable book, especially for the kids I have here at the JDC. They can relate to the themes, characters, and experiences, as most have grown up in complicated family systems and in communities not dissimilar from Garden Heights. Thomas is a great writer, and with "On The Come Up," I think she captured the language (her characters sound like my kids--even more so than in THUG). Well done, and we'll be eagerly waiting her third novel.

I actually liked this book a lot better than The Hate You Give. The Hate You Give was an important book, but there were a lot of unnecessary scenes and even unnecessary characters. The pacing was slow at times, and the story seemed to drag on. I still liked that book, but it wasn't my favorite. This book shows the author's growth. The charactes are all gripping and there is not a dull moment. I read the book in two days. The message of the story will stick with you. This is definately worth the read and one I will probably return to in the near future.

Reading this young-adult novel, I realized that -- likely since I'm now much older and a bit more jaded -- I'm not as prone to simply assume (as did some characters in this story) that hip-hop incites violence. Granted, I'm not an ardent fan of that music genre. Yet I'm more willing to see it as poetry addressing social injustices and real-life inner turmoil. The story called to my mind how such lyrics may be disquieting to mindsets in the U.S. that are more suburban, conservative, and (if I may phrase it so) colonialist. Here, high-school student Bri's passion to perform is tested by the pressures of her deceased dad's rap legacy, as well as the music industry's own demands (along with its misogynistic attitudes), and Bri's own preparations for college entrance exams. As the story progresses, Bri's lyrics vent against campus racism. But will this result in her music being censored, and her being virtually labeled a hoodlum? More urgently, will a music career prove a ticket for her family to escape compounding financial hardships? While I more strongly favor the author's first novel, don't misunderstand -- this book, too, turned out enjoyable for me. The ending here may have seemed a bit ideal, but true to life, not all turned out rosy for everyone. I felt grateful to get acquainted with Bri's family and each of her closest peers. I grinned at some lyrical "sick burns" and I laughed seeing how gossip was prized at the church that Bri's family attended. I welcomed the implied ties to "The Hate U Give" and even a nod to a certain Becky Albertalli novel.

Fantastic. I’m not gushing, but it’s really, very good.Bri is, as she says, brilliant, and as a character, one of the most unique and complex I’ve ever read. She’s tough and vulnerable, talented and sensitive, yet hot-headed. I love her voice, and being taken on the ride of her confusion feels genuine and was so much fun.I love how Thomas doesn’t shy away from so many social lessons with this novel, more so than with THUG. Gun violence, racial stereotypes, welfare, systemic poverty, drug abuse, drug distribution, police brutality, and so much more are all discussed while also weaving in a bit of romance and the right amount of family drama. This is a fast-paced read and I really want Trey to be my big brother, too. I just felt like it wasn’t as tight as I’d like it to be, and the pacing was off at times. Minor issue. An incredible story. My kids will love it.

Fans of THUG can rest easy knowing that this one is no sophomore slump. I am curious about the audio book now because I just feel like the scenes with Bri's songs would be FABULOUS on audio. I loved how the story takes place in the same neighborhood as THUG because it felt so familiar going back into it. I appreciated Bri's struggle with figuring out who she is and the way Angie Thomas so brilliantly writes that struggle - of what people expect you to be and who you truly are. So so well done.

I enjoyed this novel. IAngie Thomas is an exciting writer. I don't know a lot about hip hop and reading this sent me googling and youtubing. I think it would be great reading for teens. There is a lot of profanity but that is the way teens talk. I hopr people don't let prudishness and rigidity stop them from taking in the message that this novel delivers or stop them from allowing young people to experiencing the novel. The messages regarding education, family, religion, knowing who you are and surviving are powerful. I am over 60, a Motown kid of the 70s and I found this novel upl iiftig and positive.

Angie has done it again! This book was incredible and captivating from the moment I opened it. She tackles her stories with so much heart and authenticity that her characters are more alive than some people I know in real life. One of my favorite things about her writing is how developed the adult characters are—and On the Come Up is no exception. I feel like YA usually doesn’t do parents or adults justice or craft them realistically. But each person no matter what age was just as developed and real as the main character. The voice is strong, the plot was mesmerizing—-everything about this book is a must read. Angie is the most talented author I’ve read in years!

Although Haynes still occasionally pumps out some really lackluster rehashes that are more photo-book than "technical manual," their space books have definitely improved over the last couple years. I've gotten a little burnt out on the series (to be fair, there's nothing wrong with weaning yourself from an addiction), but books like this give me hope that it won't die out anytime soon. The level of detail in this book is roughly comparable to their recent Mercury spacecraft manual - in short, novice readers stay away, serious space geeks take note. The book opens with a brief overview of the genesis and design of an unmanned Saturn/Titan probe in the mid-80s through early 90s. The next two chapters (roughly 70 pages) provide a wealth of detail on the Cassini orbiter and Huygens probe. Each of the major spacecraft systems and instruments is described in fairly rich technical detail, accompanied by a large number of "behind the scenes" photographs and technical diagrams. The rest of the book is essentially a chronological history from spacecraft assembly, through launch and cruise, Saturn arrival, Huygens landing, and ongoing exploration. The final chapter provides an interesting look at possible future missions to Saturn and Titan, including miniature submarines and dirigibles. This is probably the densest and most detailed space book Haynes has ever published. There's a flowchart showing how the AACS functioned, detailed explanations of what the DCSS, FPGA, MMRTG, and VIMS do, exploded views of the NAC of the ISS, and even a diagram showing the relationship of the BTA to the PMS. Lest anyone thinks I'm being sarcastic, the glossary provides explanations of roughly 250 acronyms. Quite honestly, this book can be a bit exhausting in places, and I found myself taking breaks from it rather often. The second half is definitely an easier read; the technical detail is still present but not quite as heavy, and everything described earlier on has a part to play in a narrative history of the spacecraft. The author is a planetary physicist and engineer who was heavily involved in the design of the Huygens probe, so it's not really surprising how detailed this book is, or that it focuses on the Titan/Huygens side of things. There's no human interest material, no "how we fixed it at the last second" drama, or much in the way in spectacular imagery. Although it can be awfully dense at times, this book is definitely worth checking out for anyone looking for a straight no-BS look at the engineering behind the Cassini spacecraft.

Wonderfully detailed "owners manual" for Cassini-Huygens, with excellent insights into the mission and engineering behind it.

Good reading. Lots of information on Cassini at Saturn mission

Excellent book for the Saturn enthusiasts. Get them now while the Cassini orbiter is still in the final phase of her flight!

I love this book! Esp. with the probe going bye bye......

my husband loves it very mucha

This is a marvelous book to read cover-to-cover, or to pick through. I've operated Cassini for twenty years; today I learned, from this wonderful book, exactly how exquisitely this or that little detail was engineered, and exactly how it operated. For example take the Huygens Probe Separation Subsystem (SEPS, page 45), that set of three funny-looking tabs sticking out on Huygens. Its task was to mechanically support Huygens on Cassini during launch and cruise and arrival, to separate Huygens from Cassini on command (while imparting a twist), to separate Huygens's heat shield on command three weeks later after initial atmospheric entry, and then to separate the Huygens Probe's back cover during descent. Every tiny detail of Huygens and Cassini enjoys similar treatment in this Owners' Workshop Manual. Two take-home points: (1) Imagine a final page proclaiming (accurately), in big bold letters, "And it all basically worked without a hitch!" and (2) This book is a key to thoroughly appreciating the singular, monumental, extraordinary piece of work that will be burning up like a meteor in Saturn's atmosphere, early on September 15, 2017.

This tells you everything you wanted to know about Cassini-Huygens and more. And what a fun format!
