Plenty of background information, a description of local fossil sites and a handy identification guide to common teeth that you're likely to find are included. BTW -- Don't miss Sharky's!

I like the book but I wish that the pictures were in color. Sometimes it's hard to make out details when the images are in B & W.

There was some interesting information I didn't know about the beaches in Venice and I live about 15-20 miles away having moved here about 1 year ago. We did try looking for shark teeth at the 2 beaches listed and did not find any. Neither did the people we talked to. Will try again. The book was okay, but again, I was looking for more detailed source to identify shark teeth. Probably needs some updating.

The way to do this is to "do hard things". Those hard things come from five categories, which include things that are outside of your comfort zone, things that go beyond what is expected or required, things that are too big to accomplish alone, things that don't earn an immediate pay off and things that challenge the cultural norm.This is meant to be a book that challenges the teen's psyche and inspires the reader to do things in the name of God to improve their world. Many people fail to push themselves and therefore fail to accomplish much of anything in their lives. By nipping this in the bud during the teenage years, a person could live a much more lively life.While this book is written for teenagers, I think just about anyone could glean some inspiration and motivation from it. The only two issues I have is that Catholics may find some offense in this book especially with how monks are depicted or imagined by the authors and the proselytizing without regard to one's personal safety.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from Waterbrook Multnomah in exchange for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion here is entirely my own.

I'm 37 years old and just finished this book. It's one of many that I have started over the last 16 months, but the only one I have finished.I was inspired to read the book after listening to an audio about a father who watched his son's love for baseball, be cut short as he tried out for the High School team and was cut. This sent the son on the "normal" teenage path of bad choices, friends who were bad influences, and ultimately a party that changed his son's life.The father came home from a family outing that the young man, who was 14 at the time, decided not to go on. What he found once he got home, was the remains and evidence of what had been a wild party. With fire in his eyes, and not knowing what to do, he chased his son to his room, bent him over his knee and spanked him. Further discussion came with the price of not knowing what further consequences would be, but for the immediate future, he was grounded. Shortly after this experience, the father came across this book. The new consequence would be, his son could be ungrounded once he read the book and wrote a report about what he had learned from the book, not just a report about what the book was about. The young man has since started his own free enterprise business, leads others in the fight of free enterprise education, and continues to grow and inspire others his own age and is only 18.My oldest son is now 14 and he excels in school. He should only be in 8th grade, but is dual enrolled in both High School and College as a freshman, taking a handful of sophomore classes. He also has his own business as a subcontractor doing miscellaneous jobs to earn money. Because school comes so easy for him, he doesn't push himself to his limits or full potential. His spare time and all of his money is drowned in video games and he knows everything there is to know about the Zelda Universe.He recently asked my wife and I if he could skip a couple days of school to buy the newest game system and the newest Zelda game that came out the same day. Neither of us liked the idea, but we also knew how hard he had worked to save up the money to achieve his goal. At that point I made a deal with him. He could have the 2 days off of school if he agreed to read this book and write a 2 page report of what he learned from the book.I gave him this challenge a month ago, 02/02/17. My wife, in her infinite wisdom, 2 weeks later, challenged me too read and finish the book before he did. She thought it would be a good idea for me to be able to discuss what I'd learned from the book with him once we were both done reading it. He finished late last night, I finished this morning 03/01/17. I look forward to reading his report and discussing my goals and the hard things I plan on accomplishing this year. My hard things include significant weight loss, tripling my income, and taking my entire family (I'm a sole provider of a family of 9) on a 2 week long tropical getaway. 2017 will be my best year!

My 13yo dd grabbed this up before my 15yo ds could (I bought it for him), and she has been challenging herself to make and keep routines, be more helpful, and even wants to start a non-profit helping the homeless now! She has all kinds of great ideas. I haven't read the book yet myself, but just judging by her response, I am impressed!

This is a book that can change every teenagers life. The message that God has a plan for your life and it starts now, not when you turn 21, is so inspirational to a young person who wants more. This message can plant a seed in your heart that grows into a deep belief that God has bigger ,greater plans for you when you trust Him.

They say some good things in this book, but I wasn't looking for the sole reason to do something "hard" is for God. I am not taking away the value of doing something for God or believing, but I feel that pushing the connection with God could have been in another book. I didn't understand the authors background ahead of time - my fault. This is not a book my children will connect to. It would be great for a church youth group though.

I bought this book for my daughter and granddaughter. It is written by two homeschooling brothers who discovered a secret most teens are missing-that they are capable of doing way more than we give them credit for! A must read for all youth groups and middle to high school kids! Our daughter is a high school sophomore and read this and gave her class a book talk on it-very important stuff here. Makes a wonderful gift for teens, especially those who are leaders.

Purchased this book for my 15 year old son for Christmas. He doesn’t “love” to read but we make it a priority as a family. He came to me yesterday and said “mom this book is a page turner!” He is inspired, motivated, and has enjoyed reading. I would highly recommend!

We read this in our youth group and it's an incredible read! Really inspired many of our youth and transformed their lives! We bought theses two copies for our kids as a summer reading project. They are really enjoying their read of them! Incredible for teens to help them believe they can do way more than society expects of them!

And leave glowing reviews.Bell delivers what he promises, and delves into several kinds of story endings, not just "happily ever afters," but twist endings and tragic endings, and more.And, in my opinion, there's a major bonus in "The Last Fifty Pages...." It's the OTHER bits Bell includes - overviews of some of his other books (like "Super Structure" and "Write Your Novel from the Middle"). Those tips can radically improve your current book, too.I've been writing fiction for more years than I'd like to admit. And, I have far too many unfinished books on my hard drive, because they lost their spark, even with the best, most meticulous plotting I could muster. I kept thinking, "I guess I'm not a very good writer."I'm glad I didn't quit."The Last Fifty Pages..." was exactly what I've needed. It's (finally) clued me into what was missing. Why so many of my story ideas fell flat, once I started writing them. Why I lost interest halfway through. This is my first JSB book and it likely won't be my lasts. I've been hung up on my memoir's ending for months now, scribbling and erasing and retyping only to never be fully satisfied with where and how things end. I love that this kindle book focuses on this exact subject. I appreciate that the author didn't fatten his page count with page after page of other author's examples (as I so often see in the kindle bookstore). JSB offered down to earth and easy to follow content on what to do and not do when ending your book. It is more suited toward fiction writers, but even non-fiction/memoir folks like myself can find use in it.Two thumbs up. Now, someone stop me before I wipe the dust off my Amazon credit card and buy the rest of Bell's ebooks on writing tips.

The author has a very engaging teaching style and a wicked sense of humor. I loved how he used examples of novel endings to support his advice. It really made this book a joy to read. I've read a lot of books by James Scott Bell, I believe he is the best at sharing information to make writers the best authors possible. There were two places in the book that made it well worth the minor cost of the book and allowed me to gleam insights to make my current work in progress better.I think the book started slow and un-focused, but if you get past chapter three you will find nuggets of gold. He does use a lot of the same stories and insights from previous books he's written, but did a good job taking the same stories and digging deeper into the ending. What makes an ending stronger, when to show a protagonist's victory or defeat.I've had a couple of readers of my first book tell me it had a weak ending, so I'm looking forward to utilizing the concepts James included in his book to make my next novel even better than the first.

I always learn so much with each James Scott Bell book I read. There are so many writing instructors out there, but Bell seems to speak the language that makes sense to me and I always walk away from his books with practical and applicable techniques for my next project to make my writing better and more sellable. This book really helped me think through some possibilities for writing a dynamic ending to my next novel. I especially like the idea of aiming for a target ending but also having the freedom to change that ending when I get there. I enjoy reading JSB’s craft books. I learn a lot from them, and they don’t put me to sleep.

I love these, and so do my kids. I am a biology professor (and so is my hubby). We are always looking for ideas for engaging not only our students but to share with pre-service teachers in our classes. We also have kids (8-13 y) on which we like to try out lots of stuff. These books are great. They are simple - not likely for an on-grade middle schooler or high schooler - but engaging, and creatively written. They would be great warm up exercises. My kids were glued to them when they came. Highly recommended.

Dorothy L. Sayers is one the most brilliant writers of the twentieth century. Her work spanned a number of genres, from detective novels, to religious stage productions, radio dramas, apologetic essays, and translations of Dante’s Inferno and Purgatorio that are still in print.Sayers is less popular than C. S. Lewis, in part, I think, because he wrote children’s literature that draws new generations of readers more readily into his camp. Sayers was, however, no less witty and intriguing a figure as Lewis.In fact, it is encouraging that more of Sayers’ work seems to be returning to print. There are a number of her essays that are hard to find, but which politely dismember opposing arguments in terms that make the power of her logic perfectly clear. Her detective novels, which are now somewhat dated period literature, are good stories in addition to their subtle arguments for truth. Christians, especially evangelical Christians, need a good dose of Dorothy L. Sayers.The latest release in the Plough Publishing series celebrating the gospel in a range of writers is The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers. This anthology curates selections from all genres in chapters focused on particular topics like judgment, equality, creativity, and the cross. In some cases, entire essays are reprinted, like her powerful and satirical essay, “The Dogma is the Drama.” In other cases, the editor has selected a few paragraphs from a novel, or a scene from a play.With the growing interest in Sayers studies, this is a timely and helpful volume. For those who have already come to appreciate her work, The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers offers buffet to sample some of her offerings. Also, the book can make a handy reference volume (much like books of quotes by Chesterton and Lewis) since it can be hard to remember just where and exactly how Sayers said something in one the books one has read. The editor has done well to select many of the most significant passages, such that this book may serve as a shortcut for those writing on Dorothy L. Sayers.NOTE: I received a gratis copy of this volume from the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. This is a revised version of a review posted at Ethics and Culture.

“The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers” (Plough, 2018) is enigmatic, even cryptic at best. She was a writer of detective novels which seemingly had nothing to do with religion, yet she viewed her essays, critical writings and poetry as reflections of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. She suggests that the popularity of detective novels among clergy and others exists for this very reason, and likes the idea that “your sin will find you out!”I laughed a lot as I read “The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers” published by Plough, because, as a retired clergyman I had come to some of the same conclusions about religion in my generation as she did in hers considering she was born in 1893. It is said that she never emphasized the differences between Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic or Anglo Catholics of which her father was a clergyman in the Church of England, but rather sought out their similarities and that these were evident or implicit in her writings. Her works were compared to those of C. S. Lewis who also wrote “A Panegyric for Dorothy L. Sayers,” a word I had to look up (with thanks to Wikipedia.) Having spent a number of years on the staffs of two state Councils of Churches, her insights brought back many memories as I drifted in and out of all things Protestant and even Roman Catholic during those years following Vatican II. Criticism comes easily from those perspectives.So- what she says to us today has hardly evaporated into history. Her insights touch us as well as her love of word meanings and philosophical insights.Richard T. Purchase.
