Mary Gabriel has completed brilliant work that translates a mind-boggling volume of research into a vivid and eminently readable account of the lives, art and times of these ground-breaking and adventuresome artists, who happened to be women. The broad scope of the book ranges over the broad economic, political, and artistic milieu to provide the very relevant context of the personal lives of these artists as well as their art and the art of their friends and contemporaries. The author got this story right. Full disclosure: I knew one of the artists well, Elaine de Kooning, my aunt. In her studio and elsewhere I met many of the figures that appear in this book over many years. I heard their stories, listened to their conversations, and looked at their work. Reading this book was a nostalgic sojourn spent with them again.I received an advance copy of this book from the author. It is a long book and it took me too long to read it, but it was an enjoyable and enchanting spell. Now I feel somewhat disoriented having to leave those now distant legendary decades of artistic innovation in NYC's Village and the Hamptons with the remarkable artists that peopled it. Highly recommended!

Here's an intimate portrait of 5 of the women who created art along side the men in the abstract expressionist movement. While most everyone has heard of Jackson Pollock, how many have heard of his wife Lee Krasner?Or Elaine De Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan or Joan Mitchell? Yet these 5 women struggled, starved, sacrificed and studied along side the giants of the art industry. And they were recognized as artists in their own time.Today, they seem to have been lost along the way. This book shows them as holding their own and even influencing their male contemporaries. This book explains how, where and why they created the art that so many people would dismiss as "something my kid could do". And gives the reader a much better understanding of the reasons and thought processes behind their art.For anyone who wants to "understand Modern Art", this could be a primer. And although it is long, it reads like a juicy novel. There are photos of all the women, some of the men and the paintings mentioned in this book.As a former Art Museum docent , the hardest question for my guests to answer was "Name 5 women artists". After reading this book, YOU'll be able to name these 5 incredible artists and then some!

Caveat. I am not an artist or an art historian. I'm simply an art enthusiast. Even though I have already read several biographies on the artists covered in this book, this work offered fresh insight, new angles, and superb context. Like other reviewers have said - at first I could not put the book down - but later I did. I found that often I would read a few pages, but the boo aside and just think and reflect. I realized at some point I didn't want the book to end. Like good novels, the characters in the book became as if they were people I knew, and in each case, I knew, it would end. I felt a longing for a time when Art, literature and drama mattered so much that it was featured on the covers of major magazines. Now we live in a time when major magazines are gone, so many young people barely read, and art is assailed as a frivolous activity that should be removed from education in place of more practical matters. I know of the poets, the literary magazines, and the art of the time covered in this book but really have no idea if anything like that exists in this time. There well may be a similar movement now. So in the end when the last page was turned I felt sad,I wanted to story to continue and this great book to keep going. I am a voracious reader - I count this book as one of the truly great books I have read in my lifetime.

I’ve always had a difficult time understanding abstract expressionism. This is the first book I’ve found that provided insight into the makers, their driving ambition, their art practice, and their lifestyle. I may still not appreciate all the artworks but I do have an appreciation for the struggles and the sacrifices and struggles of the artists. While the focus is on the women, the story is much more comprehensive of the time, the places, and the personalities around the whole movement.

Very long but worth the wait. Interesting & easy to set down & pick up later. Real women artists are documented in the changing word of American art.

I don't read books about art -- I look at art. Ninth Street Women is the exception. I couldn't put it down. Three friends said the same thing: It is the best book about art ever written.

Barbara Barrick is reading this book. It is very readable, informative, thorough, and holds my interest completely. This is exactly the kind of information I wanted to read about these artists. It places them within the historical setting as well. I am enjoying the reading, although the book is very heavy to hold.

Insightful, full of PROBLEMATIC -- NOT PROBLEM -- AS IT APPEARS IN AMAZON'S "CORRECTION" IN PREVIOUS SUBMISSION -- people whom I keep thinking about, in a nexus of personality, gifts, class, character, conditions -- all the things that make us who we are, and certainly made these women who they were: those who prevailed. Brava!

Animal Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form, by Eliot Goldfinger

From Booklist

Goldfinger, author of Human Anatomy for Artists (1991), stresses that bodies have specific volumes created by anatomical structures, and he reveals how the interrelationship of muscles and bones determines shape and proportion. His straightforward guide starts with animal classification and a listing of nonmedical terminology and then explicates the "basic body plan." Detailed line drawings, black-and-white photographs, and silhouettes, as well as explanations of skeletons, emphasize the functions of various body portions such as lower leg and shoulder joint, and Goldfinger thoroughly depicts individual muscles before progressing to elaborate side views and cross sections of complete anatomies. Feathers, horns, and antlers are treated separately with both diagrams and photos before the text concludes with a brief overview of the venous system. Many will find especially useful the extensive, multimedia, annotated bibliography. This technical treasure is sure to find an audience among artists and serious animal enthusiasts alike. Review

"The definitive reference guide on the subject."--American Artist"This technical treasure is sure to find an audience among artists and serious animal enthusiasts alike."--Booklist"An excellent tool for beginner or master painter, sculptor, or illustrator."--Art Times"The work of artist Eliot Goldfinger combines scientific rigor with aesthetic discrimination. In its wide scope and copious detail, his new book on animal anatomy is an invaluable reference for anyone intent on the vivid depiction of animal life, including painters, sculptors and animators. Artistic anatomy has fallen on hard times in recent years; no one has done more to bring it out of the doldrums--with this book and its predecessor on human anatomy--than Eliot Goldfinger."--Gary Faigin, Artist; Co-founder and Artistic Director of the Seattle Academy of fine Arts; Instructor of anatomy, painting and drawing; Author of The Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expression"Animal Anatomy for Artists is an essential reference for any artist working with animals. It provides remarkably extensive material on the horse, cow, lion, and dog, and strong basic material on numerous other species, domestic and exotic. Goldfinger presents material that is not available in any other anatomy book in print. I, and many of my colleagues familiar with his excellent and important text, Human Anatomy for Artists, are fortunate to have this book for our use as well as that of our students. Animal Anatomy for Artists is an exciting and major addition to the literature of art education."--David Klass, Artist; Instructor in animal and human anatomy at the New York Academy of Art in New York City and the Loveland Academy of Fine Arts in Loveland, Colorado"While this book is indeed useful to artists, Animal Anatomy for Artists is so much more than an anatomy reference book--it is Eliot Goldfinger's graphic celebration of the wonders and intricacies of animal anatomy, a visual testimony to his consummate skill as an anatomist and an artist. To appreciate the way the animals are put together, use this book, and along the way, marvel at the depth and range of its author."--Richard Ellis, Natural history painter and writer; Author and illustrator of Great White Shark, Aquagenesis, and The Empty Ocean

I started using this book for my animal drawing students I teach at a university in southern California I've been at for more than 10 years. I used it to replace "Animal Anatomy for Artists" book by Ellenberger, Dittrich, and Baum (Dover Publications). The reason is that THIS book has more variety of animals with up-to-date terminologies which is more user friendly for the artists, a larger variety of animal bone and muscle references and illustrations (Including rhino, hippo, giraffe, elephants, etc.) which the other book has only a few. This book also shows a breakdown muscle by muscle attachment points and also some photographs of the animals being examined. The only weak spot is that in some of the diagram illustrations of biomechanic range of motion on some of the animals (particularly the horse) the range of motion is extremely exaggerated and unrealistic. Having been a horse trainer for years and knowing these animals exremely well, there are some ROM drawings that are not accurate at all. Other than that, if you don't look at those particular bone illustrations for that reference, the book is pretty good.I am using this book both for slides, homework, and in class studies.

You need to learn anatomy in order to draw animals .... you won't understand the form or landmarks if you don't and will focus on just the surface resulting in poor drawings. This book really helped my understanding in drawing animals - studying the bones and muscles from different angles. Yes the book was written decades ago and this is more in the ball park of "medical illustration" but its definitely necessary and right on mark. study and copy muscles and bones and then move into form - you'll be drawing great animals in no time.

Animal Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form, was recommended by a friend and fellow Taxidermist from South Africa. I thought I had all I needed in the way of animal anatomy books, and as a veteran Taxidermist of some 45 years experience, I thought I had much in the way of mammal anatomy figured out. Well, I do, but this book is like looking at one of my favorite subjects with 'fresh eyes'! What a superb addition to any Animal Artists library. No matter what your medium ... oils, watercolor, pencil, clay, crayon, or yes even Taxidermy ... this book will be a huge benefit to anyone striving to learn more about their favorite subjects of the Animal Kingdom! There are more mammalian species covered in detail in this book than in any other. And the breakdown of individual muscles is as I have never seen before. The author Eliot Goldfinger has really delved deep beneath the skin of actual specimens to bring this treatment of the subject of animal anatomy to life! Each new chapter is prefaced with a small amount of descriptive text regarding the subject being handled, but does not go too deeply into their natural history and habits ... something not required when interest in the anatomical study is all that is required. There are a plethora of books out there that concern themselves with the Natural History of a particular animals life. This book does what one wants ... explains and illustrates mammalian anatomy as no other single volume has done before. And I applaud Mr. Goldfinger for his efforts! This book is a very welcome addition to my library, and I am certain it will be welcomed into yours.

Super helpful refrences for sculpture! I appreciated the proportions. Very pleased with it, though I wish it had a bit more vareity. However it does have great basic skeletal and mucles structure which can be used for a similar animal.

Got this as a gift for a friend of mine who is a professional artist (clay sculpturer) and she says it is one of the best anatomy books she's seen.

The many images and anatomy visuals in this book are extremely helpful for anyone wishing to better understand the animals and how they move.Various skeletal and muscular details will help artists in better understanding their subject so they can more accurately draw them.Even if you aren't an artist, the very detailed descriptions of the various bones and muscles are a wealth of information for anyone desiring or needing to know this information.A superb book! The only qualm I have is that I ordered the book new and I found various smudges (looked like fingerprints) on various pages of the book. That is a separate issue, however, from the book review itself.

I am taking Natural Science Illustration certificate and found this to be the most useful when trying to draw a tapir in muscle and skeleton layers. They include enough views of the horse that I could extrapolate the view on the tapir. Possibly some errors, so a second source is a good idea, but the back has a great bibliography for secondary references.

This is a wonderful book. I am an illustrator, cartoonist and artist and I've published several illustrated books. Even so, I am always keen to find ways of adding to my internal stock of image-drawing abilities. There are lots of good books available, but I didn't want an encyclopaedia of anatomy. This one was exactly right for my needs.

Thank you Laurie Calkhoven for writing this book. More children need to know about these women who were not famous until they were quite old. Women do program computers and were in fact the first programmers. So I have known this story my whole life because one of these women was my mother. We knew what she did, but the world didn’t know until 1985. If it had not been for Kathy Kleiman, these women’s story would never have been told. And Kathy had to dig for this story because the women themselves did not value their own work enough. Maybe it was because they grew up in a world that didn’t value the work they were doing. They were helping the war effort like so many other people. These “human computers” and then later the ENIAC programmers were treated as sub-professionals by the men of the ENIAC team. And you can bet their salaries were pretty low too. So thanks to the author for making this story available to children

This is a great introduction for young people to the history of computing. It recovers lost history about the seminal role of women in the development of computing and specifically the creation of the programming discipline. I'd like to thank the author for helping to give the generation of women who choose a career in technology the knowledge that women have been there from the start, and the empowerment of knowing they are joining a long line of smart women who have shaped the modern world.

Loved it!

Thank you.
