This is the most comprehensive book yet to appear which seeks to refute the claims of Holocaust deniers and revisionists. It seeks to put the nature of historical "truth" in a semi-philosophical framework as well as tackling the empirical claims of deniers head on. As Sherman and Grobman make very clear, Holocaust deniers are ideologically motivated and devoted to rehabilitation of nazism. The authors have written a valuable book, but the debate (like it or not) will go on.

This book is the most convincing refutation that I've seen of the claim that there was no systematic Nazi plan to murder Europe's Jews, and the most penetrating analysis of why some people make that claim. Shermer and Grobman are to be commended for dealing with the subject from the standpoint of historiography, avoiding the shrill ad hominem arguments that are, alas, all too frequent in this sensitive area, and for making an attempt to figure out exactly why people believe what they do. Their analysis of David Irving is especially enlightening: Irving is certainly an intelligent man, and doesn't appear to be a vicious anti-Semite. The authors' explanation of how this otherwise sensible historian was led down the garden path by the ex-Nazi "in crowd" is one of the most interesting, and thoroughly convincing parts of the book.

Being an Israeli Jew, living in a society that reveres the memory of the Holocaust and having partaken in an education system that teaches the details of the Holocaust in detail, there was something missing.Having encountered Holocaust deniers on the internet and hearing their arguments I simply had no tools to counter their points. It wasn't that I didn't know enough details (though I did lack some of that), it wasn't that I wasn't exposed to experiences that led me to believe wholeheartedly that the Holocaust happened (you can't get better than first hand testimonies from actual survivors).What I lacked was an understanding of how History is established - how do we know what we know about History. The Holocaust is THE case study for how faulty evidence handling and faulty reasoning motivated by ideology can lead to denial whereas sound reasoning and historical analysis can lead to true fact finding.It's not enough to know that the Holocaust happened - one needs to know how we know. A must read.

"Denying History" is best seen as a case study of historiography; the authors' take on the issue of defining the difference between history, revision, and denial. Shermer and Grobman argue that there is a very real difference between revisionism and denial, and that, despite arguments to the contrary, Holocaust deniers' are engaged in exactly that - denial.The book gets into many of the relevant issues of historiography; bias, what are facts, the interpretation of facts, etc. and applies it to Holocaust denial. First the authors' discuss the issue of historiography in their introduction, "Who Speaks for the Past," and in Chapter 2, "The Noble Dream: How We Know Anything Happened in History." The next two chapters address who the deniers are, and why they say the Holocaust never happened - this gets into motivation and bias. Chapter 5 then addresses, "the flaws, fallacies and failings in the Denier's Arguments."The next three chapters are spent addressing denier arguments and "facts" and demonstrating how and why their "facts" do not fit into a rational historiography-based argument. Essentially Shermer and Grobman argue that the volume of data and the variety of sources overwhelmingly demonstrate the Holocaust was real; the sources all converge on a single conclusion. And the authors' are not just talking about the number of eye witness accounts, but also legal proceedings, archaeology, scientific and forensic evidence, and a variety of other historical documents from a wide variety of allied and even Nazi sources. As they point out, the deniers' discrediting of one eye witness account, or several, does not negate the volume of other eye witness accounts nor does it negate other types of evidence. Nor does their attempt at making an equivalency argument (the idea that what was done was no worse than what others did) negate the evidence.The authors' finish off the book with, "The Rape of History: Denial, Revision, and the Search for a True and Meaningful Past." This chapter has a brief review of other examples of denial, such as the Japanese and the rape of Nanking, and examples of legitimate revision, such as Martin Bernal's "Black Athena" among others. Essentially the authors' conclude that, "The difference between denial and revision is not in the extremity of the claim..., but in the purposeful distortion of the past for personal reasons...." (p. 241), and, "If there is no method of discriminating between true and false interpretations of the past, between history and pseudo-history, between revisionism and denial, then there is no point in even having a discipline of history." (p. 244)Of particular interest are Shermer's and Grobman's ten tests for denial (pp. 248-250):1. How reliable is the source of the claim?2. Has this source made other claims that were clearly exaggerated?3. Has another source verified the claim?4. How does the claim fit with what we know about the world and how it works?5. Has anyone, including and especially the claimant, gone out of the way to disprove the claim, or has only confirmatory evidence been sought?6. In the absence of clearly defined proof, does the preponderance of evidence converge on the claimant's conclusion or a different one?7. Is the claimant employing the accepted rules of reason and tools of research or only ones that lead to the desired conclusion?8. Has the claimant provided a different explanation for the observed phenomena rather than just denying the existing explanation?9. If the claimant has proffered a new explanation, does it account for as many phenomena as the old explanation does?10. Do the claimant's personal beliefs and biases drive the conclusions or vice versa?

Can a mother be objective about her son's writing as he expresses his feelings about his life? Does that review help one other person? I don't know. I do know that as I read the book I relived some of the very difficult and joyful times in Josh's life. It is an interesting juxtaposition of events that have shaped him to be the man he is. Josh hates to be labeled courageous, but courage in the face of extreme adversity is what this book is about. Who can't be inspired by someone who perseveres when it would be easy to give up? Our whole family started this journey with Josh asking "When will his Tourettes go away so he can have a life?" to realizing "How can we help him have a life with Tourettes?" was really the question. Josh has accomplished many worthwhile things in his life and still has many great things to accomplish. We are an imperfect family, we have problems like everyone else does, and we love each other deeply. I love Josh. I respect Josh's right to make his own choices in this life and am very proud of him and his book. It's an amazing, interesting, funny, sad, inspiring read whether you are his mother or anyone else. I first read about this book in an e-mail. I think it was from Goodreads as part of their Best Books of the Month feature, but it could have been through Books-A-Million or Barnes and Noble. I saw a memoir about a weight-lifting bookworm and I was at once both thrilled and apprehensive.If I have two great loves in life (not counting people), it's weight-lifting and books. And while there are books about bookworms, and books about lifters, not ONCE have I encountered a book about both of these things. It was so uniquely up my alley, and it had so much potential to be wonderful. But if it fell short of its potential, then that was it. There went my only possibility to read a book highlighting this unique combination of interests.The verdict? This book was even better than I had dared to hope for. I laughed out loud a whole bunch of times. I really mean that too, I'm not the kind of person who reads every book that is supposed to be funny and laughs out loud. Loads of books fall short of what they're aiming for, even -- perhaps especially -- books by comedians. But this book was genuinely funny, in a sometimes self-deprecating but never nasty way.Which brings me to my next point. Josh Hanagarne is such a loving person. He mentioned in his acknowledgements that his editors kept saying "It's just so refreshing to see someone write lovingly about their parents." (Yes, I loved this book so much I even read the acknowledgements word for word.) I completely agree, and will take it a couple steps further as well. Hanagarne writes about meeting his wife in a beautiful way. From the way he writes about her, you can tell that she's not exactly a siren that brings all the men running to her (29-year-old woman in the church choir, seldom wears makeup, never been kissed, and prone to talk about 401ks on the first date). But he writes about her in such a way that everyone can see how she is incredibly well-suited for him, and that he loves her not in a "she's-all-I-can-get" way, but in an "if-I-could-have-anyone-in-the-world-I'd-still-choose-her" way. I've read memoirs (and fiction books) where people fall in love, and you just don't quite by the falling-in-love story. This one absolutely hits home; their relationship seems completely genuine (not perfect, but generally good) and a great thing for everyone to aim for.Even the library patrons Hanagarne frequently talks about, the ones with schizophrenia and other mental problems, are written about with love. There's a sense of humor present, but never any sense of derision or snark, and it's beautiful to read from the perspective of someone like that. I think I fell in love with the author just a little bit.Regarding the weight lifting parts of the book, an author I greatly respect (Lou Schuler) reviewed this book, saying it was possibly the best weight-lifting book he'd ever read, even though only about 10% of the book was about lifting. After reading the book, I know exactly what he means. While there are lots of books about there about programs and techniques, this book addresses the mental aspect. It goes into detail about the psychological and therapeutic effects of weight-lifting, how it can calm and focus your mind, and how the ability to move large objects really gives you a sense of having a handle on your life and your body.The sections on his love for books were great at capturing that feeling of escape that makes me love books, forgetting about your own life in your urgency to get lost in fake emergencies and problems and worry about if these fictional characters are going to get out okay.The parts on Tourette's syndrome were illuminating. I've never known anyone with Tourette's (at least not very well), and I was fascinated by having an inside look on the syndrome, seeing how it affects you and what it feels like.The parts on Mormonism were my least favorite parts of the book. I'm not religious and religion doesn't particularly interest me. I do suspect that this book may have had a bit of redemptive effect for Hanagarne. He had to cut his mission short due to health problems, and perhaps writing this book helped him to feel like he was still reaching a lot of people with the message of religion.And now I'm incredibly late for my morning workout, but I finished this book last night and I just couldn't wait to share my love for this book with the world. This book was absolutely wonderful.

I went online to You Tube and watched the trailer for the book. I immediately went online and ordered the hardcover.This memoir is the story of Josh Hanagarne and his journey as he dealt with his Tourette's Syndrome. While this was the focus of the book, I found myself more intrigued by his love affair with books. Also intriguing was his Mormon faith and struggle with it.This is a quotable book. Here are some of my favorites:1.) "We lose the boys first. They're excited about reading at first, but once they get tight with someone who looks down on reading, knowledge, or librarians, their opinions change." Reading this saddens me and reinforces why I always feed the desire to read when I see it in any child.2.) "If she saw no issues w/ binding herself to a God she'd never seen, I didn't see why I couldn't bind myself to a guy out in Maine who wrote horror stories." Josh's response to his mom forbidding him to read Stephen King.3.) "If hate & fear have ignorance at their core, maybe the library can curb their effects, if only by offering ideas & neutrality." The library is a wealth of info. Use it.4.) "A library is a miracle. A place where you can learn just about anything, for free. A place where your mind can come alive." I remember spending hours in the library when I was younger, just taking in all of the books that surrounded me.I highly recommend this book to everyone. I never read books twice. This one, I will be rereading, and I will be taking my highlighter along for the ride.

I loved Josh and learning about the Mormon way of life. I loved his fight to beat his Tourette’s. I loved his marriage and their struggle to have kids. I loved his love of books and learned an awful lot about weights and strength building. And I learned how often the medical profession doesn’t ask the right questions. I loved how he felt about his faith journey. My book club rocks!!!

It took me a long time to get around to reading VADM Lockwood's book, and I regret that now. it is excellent. I have been collecting and maintaining a private submarine library for 35 years, and I just didn't think the admiral could add much to what I knew already. I have always enjoyed reading about the patrols, and I thought I did not want the bureaucrat's view of it all. That was shortsighted on my part. The skippers loved Lockwood, and he has written a fine book. Most of the book is spent covering the most significant patrols and events of the war, but with a different perspective on some of the most famous patrols. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And if I could offer a tip, I am now reading "Luck of the Draw" by Captain Kenneth Ruiz, and it will be one of my all-time favorites. Just a superb book about his submarine career in WWII, and I've read them all, by all the services. But I digress....I think you will truly enjoy VADM Lockwood's book. It's great if you know nothing - it's still very good if you know a lot.

There are so many great World War II submarine service memoirs written by submarine crew members that I have enjoyed through the years. I have always enjoyed reading the experiences of the American branch of service with the highest casualties in all of World War II. I wish I would have read this book before I read so many of those other great works, because I really feel VADM Lockwood's book does a great job framing so many of the strategic issues that would have impacts at the operational and tactical level. I very much enjoyed his relation of the problems the Navy had with both torpedoes' magnetic exploders and contact exploders and what everyone did to fix them. In so many sub crew memoirs, it is just a Bureau of Naval Ordnance that refused to reason. As is so often the case, there is a much deeper and more complicated story. The efforts to get through Japanese minefields, the cooperation with civilian research institutions for better equipment, and the issues of inter-service cooperation really merit reading. Additionally, his relation of what individual crews did and what an impact they had is a great part of any Admiral's or General's memoirs; the story of where the rubber met the road. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an intrest in WWII naval history, dynamics of command, and analysis of problem solving issues at the macro-level.

It is not often that a reader is saddened to reach the last page of a book, but such is the case with this one. Admiral Lockwood tells the entire history of the almost four years of the US Naval submarine war against the Imperial Japanese Navy, an implacable foe, from his position as the Commander Submarines Pacific. He names the men and the boats they commanded while providing a month by month running total of the tonnage sunk and damaged using both Japanese Naval records and U S submarine after action reports for verification. Enemy tankers, freighters, and warships of all types, in that order were the targets. It soon becomes apparent the war was certainly shortened by the millions of tons of Japanese Naval shipping sent to the bottom. This was achieved in spite of our boats fighting most of the war with the worst torpedoes of any combatant. How many boats were lost because of duds, or sunk by their own circling torpedo will never be divulged to the public, if in fact a number is even known. Too many messages of, "Overdue, presumed lost." - could have been the result of our own defective torpedoes. The Pacific Ocean was almost entirely in the hands of the Japanese Imperial Navy in the early half of the war, until their drive to Australia was finally halted and the slog northward to Japan gained traction. The author portrays ever engagement of this drive and the part played by his submarines with his engaging prose mixed with both victory and heartbreaking losses. He also correctly details much of the savagery the Japanese military employed against captive submariners, and others, pulling no punches in the details, while conveying the hatred such treatment engendered in US forces. The end of the war in Tokyo Bay is portrayed in graphic detail, the best treatment I have ever read. I gave this engaging read five stars simply because I couldn't give it six . This book is the best I have ever read on submarine warfare, truly the Big Picture on how, why, and where our boats helped win the war in a big way.

This is the bible for the submarine warfare in the Pacific during World War Two. Had no idea our sub sand and damaged over 10 million tons of Japanese shipping and men of war.The final chapters, 21 and 22 were much too long. They came across as an after-thought. Before these chapters, the story is well told with an excellent chronological order. The last two, especially, 21, are more of a shotgun approach. He goes into the current Cold War situation with Russia and the development of the first nuclear sub and then keeps repeating and repeating and repeating these facts. Not sure if it was him or the original publisher trying to fill up pages. It could have been cut down in half and still be insightful.Four and-a-half Stars to Admiral Lockwood The new publisher gets three stars for not proofreading their product.If you’re a fan of World Wat Two and want to know the great contribution of the “Silent Service,” this is must read.Four Stars

Great map, as good as the Michelin versions of Sicily at a fraction of the price. With a passenger navigating, this map helped negotiate several trips across Sicily this summer. Note that we relied primarily on Google Maps on an iPhone attached to a vent magnet device in our rental car. Google Maps showed real-time accidents and slowdowns even in small towns we passed through and had other features not available in a paper map. However, our trip was definitely made easier by having both the paper as well as tech smart phone maps.

Really a beautiful map, purchased for our upcoming trip. My only issue with it is that it is HUGE, and that may be a problem while traveling, since I will not have my dining room table handy to spread it out!

An essential accompaniment for an automobile excursion in a fascinating island.

Just recently moved from a managed brokerage firm to a discount brokerage firm.This book just confirms my thoughts on investing in individual stocks versus brokerage advised mutual funds. Each time the market has fluctuated I have noticed my stocks did not go down nearly as much as the mutual funds have. I have been investing for 25+ years and have both mutual funds and dividend paying stocks. After reading this book I am going to be taking my money out of managed mutual funds and put it in the Dividend Kings, Dividend Aristocrats or dividend champions stocks that have consistently paid dividends for years. Thank you for clarifying my thoughts about individual stocks. My stocks have more than quadrupled over the mutual funds which I have had to use the proceeds to live on in my retirement. By building this base in good quality stocks I feel that I can make my own mutual fund cheaper than the brokerage that charges so much in fees each year. I have found they take their money whether I make a dime or not which really stinks.

This book presents a somewhat unconventional view of investing with minimal risk and reliable returns by building a portfolio of equities with a long track record of dividend returns. This is unconventional in that it deviates from the conventional 'wisdom' of using a mixture of bonds and stocks in a ratio that changes as one grows older. That strategy utilizes the general inverse relation between equity returns and bond returns.Using market data, the author argues that the conventional strategy suffers from the steep, periodic hits taken by "Mr. Market", that lowers the overall return which the lower returns of bonds cannot overcome. The author presents a convincing argument that dividend stocks are less vulnerable to steep market declines over the long haul and provide better overall results with less risk and volatility. This strategy of course depends on identifying the small universe of dividend stocks that have produced steady and increasing dividends over a long time range, 25 - 50 years. There are such companies; they are typically those dull, unglamorous producers of the basic necessities of life which people need in good times and bad. The Dividend strategy is an easier approach for those who have less investment knowledge and risk tolerance and ideal for retirees who are more in need of income than building wealth through growth. However, it would also outperform index funds, mutual funds and other investments over the long haul because individual dividend stocks have lower expenses and management fees. Of course, there is no single investment strategy that works for everyone, and each person has to consider their own situation.

I have managed my own investments since the middle of the 1970s and have invested primarily in stocks. Dividend Growth Machine by Nathan Winklepleck is the best discussion of alternative methods for investment that I have ever read. The book presents a concise comparison of bonds, stocks, annuities, etc. Before reading this book, I had arrived at value judgments that are very similar to those of the author of this book in some measure as the result of my use of the data that I have obtained from the investment newsletter Investment Quality Trends. Over the past four decades, I have subscribed to many investment newsletters (I currently subscribe to three newsletters); however, none have (a) presented a better approach to investing with (b) data that make a compelling case for the approach. The book was read to me by the voice on my kindle; listening to the book was completed in approximately 3-4 hours.

Investing in the stock market can carry great risk, but I can lower this potential by using proven investment strategies like those described in this book. Dividend growth stock investing makes a lot of sense and seems to be a safer bet because "if a company can afford to grow its dividend for 10, 25, even 50 years in a row, they have to be doing something right." This non-traditional model recommends investing in quality companies that "we can rely on to pay us a generous dividend today AND keep growing that dividend for the next 10, 20, 30 years." I really liked the chapter on "The Dividend Kings" and the historical comparisons to the market. The numbers tell it all "from 1991 through 2015, the S & P 500 index returned 9.8% per year" whereas "an equal investment in each of the 18 Dividend Kings would have generated a return of 14% per year." So...better returns + less risk = Growing investment AND greater peace of mind. Who wouldn't want that? Full of thoughtful and informative background information, helpful portfolio comparisons, and practical explanations of the actual "how-to" of creating a dividend growth investment portfolio, Dividend Growth Machine is an excellent book and well worth your time!

A great intro and review for those interested in a dividend stock investing approach. A clear, concise no BS explanation that took me exactly where I wanted to go. For $2.99 , it's a steal. Thank you Nathan....well done sir.

I enjoyed reading the Dividend Growing Machine. It was a relatively quick read and provided a good foundation for investing in dividend growing stocks. Many years ago I heard of this strategy but had forgotten just how powerful it could be. Reading this book helped me to remember. I recommend this book to those new to investing as well as those that have many years in the market. Dividend growing stocks are an excellent way to grow your wealth or earn current income while participating in the market for long term growth.

If you were to choose one book to read - about trading, investing , stocks, dividends - this is the one I would recommend .I am not a novice trader - I have been involved in the markets in one way or the other since the mid 90s. This bookhad my lightbulbs going off left and right . Granted - I am new to dividend investing . I primarily traded options . I amnow reconsidering my strategies in light of the things I learned here. I wish I had read it 20 years ago - but I got hereas fast as I could .

For me, this book deserves 10 Stars and I can't recommend it enough! Whether you are new to family research, like me, or have been involved in tracing your tree for years, you will find some something of value to push through any blocks you may have encountered. I've only been researching my family for about 3 months now, so it's all new information to me and after exhausting every avenue I could think of, Ms. Rising's book helped me to find completely new leads I wouldn't have thought to explore.There is a branch of my family that has told a very romantic family story for generations, involving my 3x great grandparents' lives in a volatile area in Southwest Missouri during the Civil War. I love family lore, but I wanted to find the documentation that would either support the stories, or clarify the actual events as they truly occurred because the truth means more to me than stories that can and DO get embellished over the years. I had many challenges to overcome (courthouse burned TWICE, leaving practically zero trace of them), and this book has helped me enormously in looking at the bigger picture of not just names and dates, but the people who lived lives as we do today, as members of a family and a community, which can open floodgates of information to explore where previously there was only a brick wall. As a result of following Ms. Rising's tactics I have found documented facts that I wouldn't have found otherwise and the picture that's forming is far more intriguing than the family lore!Whether your challenge is, like mine, no county records, or family from the difficult years prior to the 1850 Federal Census, or a family with a dozen men named John, this book can help you navigate the unknowns. There are no magic answers, of course, and I have several ancestors I doubt I'll ever get to the bottom of, but this book has helped me tremendously in knowing I have uncovered every crumb trail my ancestor may have left behind. And in the case of my burned courthouse family, I have found a much deeper story than I think I would've found had those county records been readily available because being new to family research, I probably wouldn't have thought to dig even deeper or wider into their community to find the nuggets I have found, including the documentation to support them! Highly recommended!

I've been tracing family for almost twenty years, and have hit some brick walls along the way. While this book hasn't solved them all yet, it has given me many ideas for new approaches. This book is full of tips and tricks, and information that I never knew about using records but now know to look for. I have started a second reading of the book. My only criticism is that the font size for the actual book is a bit small for my old eyes, but I purchased the kindle edition also and was able to read it easily on my computer and use the highlighting feature extensively. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in conducting serious genealogical research.

Now that I'm finally reading this book, I wish I had read it a lot earlier in my search for relatives. A lot of the hints and advice I have already figured out by trial and error. The Problem Solver is an excellent book in my opinion and I would recommend it to anyone who is doing their family tree and having difficulty finding information. I would have saved myself a lot of time, effort and paper by having this information at an earlier date. Better late than never I always say.

This book is very helpful. I've been doing genealogy searches/research for a number of years. This book offers many helpful ways to refine efforts to find and to those "hidden" and lost ancestors.

Offers techniques that are sound and proven. Helps even experienced genealogists avoid pitfalls. Offers new (to me) ways of researching. This one's a keeper!

I bought this book because it was highly recommended in a webinar presentation I heard. The speaker said it was her "go to" book for all sorts of challenges. After reading the book, I can see why she was so impressed. It is not just a collection of bits and pieces of information, but is organized cohesively so that the whole process makes sense . I have already applied some of the ideas in this book, but more importantly, I've reorganized my limited skills in researching, so that I know what I need to look for next.

There is no question this is a very well-written book. Marsha Hoffman Rising presents her ideas with practical examples that anyone who is entrenched in genealogy can implement immediately. The two main concepts which I took from her include: Dealing with the problems in the years before 1850 and using information from collateral lines, neighbors, and community to help uncover information about your direct line and provide clues to migration patterns.The only disappointment I have does not involve the main ideas she put forward, as those were well-done. As she says on the cover, these are "Tried-and-True Tactics for Tracing Elusive Ancestors." Her ideas are not new. I was hoping there would be new, innovative, out-side-the-box ideas to use. For those of us who have been engaged with trying to break through those walls, we have heard these ideas before in one form or another.I don't want to discourage anyone from purchasing this book, because it is a worthwhile read. However, if you are an advanced genealogist, looking for novel ideas to break through a brick wall, you may be disappointed.

This was one of the first substantial genealogy guides I read when I was trying to take my genealogy skills to the next level with formal education. I learned a ton of good stuff from it that I did not learn just by doing genealogy. Sometimes you really need guides, etc, to open your eyes to new methods to solve problems. I recommend it.
