It took me a long time to get around to reading VADM Lockwood's book, and I regret that now. it is excellent. I have been collecting and maintaining a private submarine library for 35 years, and I just didn't think the admiral could add much to what I knew already. I have always enjoyed reading about the patrols, and I thought I did not want the bureaucrat's view of it all. That was shortsighted on my part. The skippers loved Lockwood, and he has written a fine book. Most of the book is spent covering the most significant patrols and events of the war, but with a different perspective on some of the most famous patrols. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And if I could offer a tip, I am now reading "Luck of the Draw" by Captain Kenneth Ruiz, and it will be one of my all-time favorites. Just a superb book about his submarine career in WWII, and I've read them all, by all the services. But I digress....I think you will truly enjoy VADM Lockwood's book. It's great if you know nothing - it's still very good if you know a lot.
There are so many great World War II submarine service memoirs written by submarine crew members that I have enjoyed through the years. I have always enjoyed reading the experiences of the American branch of service with the highest casualties in all of World War II. I wish I would have read this book before I read so many of those other great works, because I really feel VADM Lockwood's book does a great job framing so many of the strategic issues that would have impacts at the operational and tactical level. I very much enjoyed his relation of the problems the Navy had with both torpedoes' magnetic exploders and contact exploders and what everyone did to fix them. In so many sub crew memoirs, it is just a Bureau of Naval Ordnance that refused to reason. As is so often the case, there is a much deeper and more complicated story. The efforts to get through Japanese minefields, the cooperation with civilian research institutions for better equipment, and the issues of inter-service cooperation really merit reading. Additionally, his relation of what individual crews did and what an impact they had is a great part of any Admiral's or General's memoirs; the story of where the rubber met the road. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an intrest in WWII naval history, dynamics of command, and analysis of problem solving issues at the macro-level.
It is not often that a reader is saddened to reach the last page of a book, but such is the case with this one. Admiral Lockwood tells the entire history of the almost four years of the US Naval submarine war against the Imperial Japanese Navy, an implacable foe, from his position as the Commander Submarines Pacific. He names the men and the boats they commanded while providing a month by month running total of the tonnage sunk and damaged using both Japanese Naval records and U S submarine after action reports for verification. Enemy tankers, freighters, and warships of all types, in that order were the targets. It soon becomes apparent the war was certainly shortened by the millions of tons of Japanese Naval shipping sent to the bottom. This was achieved in spite of our boats fighting most of the war with the worst torpedoes of any combatant. How many boats were lost because of duds, or sunk by their own circling torpedo will never be divulged to the public, if in fact a number is even known. Too many messages of, "Overdue, presumed lost." - could have been the result of our own defective torpedoes. The Pacific Ocean was almost entirely in the hands of the Japanese Imperial Navy in the early half of the war, until their drive to Australia was finally halted and the slog northward to Japan gained traction. The author portrays ever engagement of this drive and the part played by his submarines with his engaging prose mixed with both victory and heartbreaking losses. He also correctly details much of the savagery the Japanese military employed against captive submariners, and others, pulling no punches in the details, while conveying the hatred such treatment engendered in US forces. The end of the war in Tokyo Bay is portrayed in graphic detail, the best treatment I have ever read. I gave this engaging read five stars simply because I couldn't give it six . This book is the best I have ever read on submarine warfare, truly the Big Picture on how, why, and where our boats helped win the war in a big way.
This is the bible for the submarine warfare in the Pacific during World War Two. Had no idea our sub sand and damaged over 10 million tons of Japanese shipping and men of war.The final chapters, 21 and 22 were much too long. They came across as an after-thought. Before these chapters, the story is well told with an excellent chronological order. The last two, especially, 21, are more of a shotgun approach. He goes into the current Cold War situation with Russia and the development of the first nuclear sub and then keeps repeating and repeating and repeating these facts. Not sure if it was him or the original publisher trying to fill up pages. It could have been cut down in half and still be insightful.Four and-a-half Stars to Admiral Lockwood The new publisher gets three stars for not proofreading their product.If you’re a fan of World Wat Two and want to know the great contribution of the “Silent Service,†this is must read.Four Stars
