About the Author

Tillie Walden is a cartoonist and illustrator from Austin, Texas. Born in 1996, she is a recent graduate from the Center for Cartoon Studies, a comics school in Vermont. Over the course of her time at CCS she published three books with the London based Avery Hill Publishing. She has already received an Eisner Award nomination and two Ignatz Awards for her early works. When she is not drawing comics, Tillie can be found walking and listening to audiobooks or asleep with a cat. She also enjoys studying architecture and tries to incorporate that passion into her comics. Spinning is her first long form autobiographical work.

Beautifully drawn, it meanders a bit but it does give you an idea of what it's like to be a young figure skater.Also it's unwittingly an illustration of the difference between Texas and New Jersey's attitudes toward culture and child achievement.The end is unsatisfying, The author is in her very early twenties and that lack of perspective shows. I've quit a number of sports, musical instruments, and hobbies throughout my childhood and teenage years and while at the time being mediocre and miserable at your hobby seems like a tremendous waste of time it never actually is a waste. I remember wishing I'd quit sooner but as an adult I grew to appreciate being able to do things effortlessly and a great deal better than someone who started learning as an adult . And I'm sure with time the author will appreciate the time spent figure skating, she will probably enjoy her skills more when they're no longer an obligatory chore.Also if you enjoyed this book I recommend her webcomic "On a Sunbeam."

Not appropriate for young skaters. I bought for my 9 year old daughter who figure skates and it had f-bombs and inappropriate content. Thankful I gave to coach to read first

Spinning features some lovely artwork, and thoughtful introspection on the author’s late childhood and adolesence. Although it is a story with queer themes, it isn’t really a traditional ‘coming out’ narrative, or romantic drama. It feels like real life with all real life’s banalities. So the narrative benefits from some authenticity, but also lacks drive, and coherence. I enjoyed the fondly remembered coach Barbara, the insights on figure skating’s cut throat atmosphere, and the ‘otherness’ of being a queer young person. The character art is nicely expressive. I wished there had been a bit more variety in the paneling. It felt a bit rigid, with a lot of 2x3 cube pages. I like how the coloring plays with negative spaces. Overall this feels like a solid early effort by a talented author. I look forward to seeing more!

This is the first graphic novel I've ever read, and I enjoyed it. It's really more of a young adult coming of age story, than a story about skating.

Great coming of age graphic novel. Felt real.

Fast delivery and a wonderfully illustrated memoir/comic.

Beautifully drawn, choice of colors is touching and overall I was very much drawn into it <3

First let me say that this review contains spoilers. This is a pity. The only reason I placed these spoilers in this review is that the product description here already lets the cat out of the bag as to the ending. This is a pity.Anyway....I first read this story years and years ago. It was one of the many short stories we had to read in a special advanced English course I took in high school. Like most kids of that age I felt I was being force fed a bunch of stuff I had absolutely no interest in and must admit that I fought it. Over the years I have forgotten most to many of the numerous stories we read during that year, which is sort of sad when you think about it, but I have to tell you that this offering from Ambrose Bierce was not one of those that I consciously or unconsciously shuffled either to the back of my mind or out of it completely. No, no - far, far from it! This one has stuck with me throughout the years and I was delighted when I found it as a free Kindle download.A Confederate man; a planter in northern Alabama during the Civil War has been captured by Union Solders. He has been sentenced to death and the story begins on a railroad bridge as the man stands on a railroad bridge with a rope noose about his neck about to be hanged. The board he is standing upon is tilted and he begins to fall.This entire short story takes place in the doomed mans mind as he falls to the end of the rope. The reader at this point does not realize this and we watch in sickening slow motion as the rope breaks, the planter hits the water, is shot at, makes a daring escape, struggles through the woods and finally finds himself going up the steps of his home to the loving arms of his wife...snap..white searing light!As the story progresses in becomes more and more surreal and the reader starts getting hints that not all is as it seems. When you consider when this work was written and published; around 1891, this is a rather remarkable ploy. You know something strange is going to happen but it is not until the final line; the final word that your suspicions are confirmed. Now I have never been hung. I probably should have been on a few occasions, but so far I have been fortunate. I am not at all sure that that much would go through a persons mind during the last three for four seconds of his or her life but that is rather moot. Whether this would actually happen is beside the point. The great thing about this story is that the author had the ability to make it quite real.This story deserves to be read closely. In truly great short stories what is not written is quite often just as important as what is written. All great short story writers have this ability and Bierce most certainly had it going when he wrote this one.In many ways this is a haunting story; anyway it was to me. While it most certainly cannot be classified as a horror story I can most emphatically tell you that it horrified me when I first read it. It had the same effect as several of the stories Poe wrote; the impact on my mind was just as great.The quality of the Kindle download is quite good on this one. It will take you 15 or 10 minutes to read and it is free. It is most certainly worth your time.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

I loved this movie the first time I saw it. I watched it with my children, but a few short years later, my youngest son and a grandson died in a car wreck. Now, I have other grandchildren, but I still long to see those who aren't with us.Losing a child or a grandchild will always be with you. Yes, I picked up the pieces, but the counselor I went to told me you never get over it. You just learn to live with it..

Interesting read!

When I was in the sixth grade, I had a teacher who used to show this short film. It was on one of those old reel-to-reel projectors, so I'm telling my age here. In the film, which is set in civil war Alabama (it must have been an Alabama history class), a civilian is about to be hanged from a railroad bridge by soldiers of the Union army. When the plank drops however, he finds himself plunging into the water. He manages to untie himself and swim downstream while dodging bullets. He succeeds in escaping and makes his way thirty miles back home where his wife comes running out the door with open arms to greet him. But there's a twist to the ending so I won't spoil it for you. Thirty years after watching this film, I read the short story, called "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce. I still can't figure out why I had to watch this film so many times in school. It's supposedly a great work of literature, but it now seems like a piece of southern-culture indoctrination-propaganda as I look back on it and question it. But the story is eerie and morbid and not unlike some of my worst nightmares, so that's why I had to read it.Written by David Allan ReevesAuthor of "Running Away From Me"

This is the second book I read by Paulo Coelho and it was even better than the first. Suicide - such a tough subject. Some feel that the person taking their life are selfish, some understand, some wish they knew that the person was that down so they could of been their to help and some just don't understand. All in all it is a sad and tough thing to go through when a family member or close friend decide to take their own life.But when you survive suicide how does the one taking their life feel? Waking up and realizing you are alive. And if this was to happen but you were told your attempt still worked because the damage to your body is so severe you have a week to live? How does one feel then facing death knowing its inevitable? Death is inevitable but when it is to approach us we do not know. We all subconsciously think about our death - but on a daily level? The seriously ill think about death. But to actually wait for your death to come? What feelings and thoughts race through your mind. So how would you feel knowing you were going to die? Would you start to live again? It is a deep question one at the moment I am thankfully do not need to ponder (but at times will admit I do). This story was beautifully written and has awaken inside of me the joy of living. Living as life should be enjoyed in the moment not past or present and always believe in yourself.

Review: Veronika Decides To Die by Paulo Coelho. 4 Stars 11/04/2018It could have been a depressing read but Paulo Coelho made the story entertaining. The book weights highly on Paulo Coelho own personal experience when he was institutionalized. Coelho’s description of the motivation behind the story is when he was younger in Brazil around 1960’s the emphases to artist was synonymous with homosexual, communist, drug addict, and low-life is similar to the same as USA’s views of the artist who drank and smoked with simplistic behavior, sometimes occasionally functional, at times completely unstable with society and the subtlety of influences that they had to face.The story is about a young Slovenian woman, Veronika, who attempts suicide a few times, fails, and is institutionalized. While in the confines of the facility Veronika is told that by overdosing on pills she had damaged her heart and only has five days to live. She now has to come to grips with what it means to be dying.Coelho writes about the effects of Veronika’s death sentence diagnosis and how she interacts with other patients. The first patient she interacts with is Zedka who is a depressive person who offers Veronika advice and insight. Than there is Maria, who withdrew from her family, friends and society because she was having severe panic attacks. Plus there is Eduardo, a schizophrenic, who befriends Veronika who is unsure if she wants a friend. Veronika still wants to die but decides she doesn’t want to hide out at the facility like the others who are free to defy rules without judgment and the feeling of being safe and secure…She is still confused about what it means to die…!

Read this book as my 3rd Coehlo book, and saw life in the light of death, depicted in a way where there was more than just sadness and regret for the lack of feeling, but for the life that was still available to access. This book will take you to more places of discovery than of blankness or despair. The title may be misleading in what you might assume it is about, but you won't regret where it takes you.

For anyone that has contemplated suicide, or has attempted it, or been in a mental hospital, this book is NOT just for you. Mental health is always talked about as an important issue on this planet lately. But this book, it makes you look at the real underlying truth to these "mental health issues" in this world. And the one main point that you should take from this book is that there are more people on this planet that have been through and dealt with some traumatic or darkness in their lifetime, then there are those that have not - and for whatever reason there is that time is spent in a hospital, you are the norm of society, and you always have been, you just had the opportunity to handle your issues with a professional vs. others that live in silence and repeat their daily lives never to see the world as it is and never moving past their past and present and living and breathing in this world.

My favorite lines:. I came into this world in order to go through: attempted suicide, ruining my heart, meeting you, coming up to this castle, letting you engrave my face on your soul. That is the only reason I came into the world, to make you go back to the path you strayed from... "This book is very profound. I really enjoyed it. Wasn't overly serious. Had some laughing points. However, I thought I'd scream at the scene with Edward. OMG!!I enjoyed this book! So much to think about. What I wouldn't give to be a part a discussion on this one.

In addition to providing a window to the world of the people labeled as mentally disturbed, this book also provides a window to the ways in which parents might cripple children's hopes for life, or how adult mentors in general can support the hopes and creativity of the young, or destroy them. Like other Coelho's stories, the narrative is deceivingly simple and the message has great depth. I felt like I could see glimpses of the characters' souls. About the Author

Philip Cushway who conceived Of Poetry and Protest, grew up on the Near North side of Chicago in the early 1960’s in the shadow of the Cabrini-Green Apartments--one of Chicago's most dangerous public housing projects. He saw his first murder at the age of 7 years while walking to school. This experience had a profound effect on him and shaped his view of society as a whole and specifically on the social injustice which plague America's inner cities. As a young adult, he became involved in local Chicago politics, the Anti-Vietnam war movement and the civil-rights movement. When he moved to California in the 1980’s, he purchased one of the largest collections of rare 1960's and 1970's political art and memorabilia which include posters from the Black Panther party and the Students for a Democratic Society. Several examples of this art appear in Of Poetry and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin. He is a fine arts publisher and collector who lives in San Francisco.Victoria Smith captured the intimate portraits of the poets in Of Poetry and Protest and is a world-wide freelance photographer based in San Francisco. Her photos have appeared in Rolling Stone, Q, Filter, Guitar World and many other publications.Michael Warr received a Creative Work Fund award for “Tracing Poetic Memory.” He is deputy director of the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco.

Just finished reading "Of Poets and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin", and can't say enough good things about this book, I really enjoyed it, I was inspired and impressed with the accomplishments of these artists. I am not a lover of poetry, but this book is so much more and the timing so fitting.Brilliantly, the book is constructed in a way that introduces you to each poet on a personal level first by a biography and beautiful photograph, followed by their poetry. Because of this I was pulled in to each poet's world and felt a connection with each one before reading their poetry. I loved the photographs of the poets, they were very real and personable. I would have not enjoyed the book nearly as much had it just been a compilation of poems. The sprinkling of photographs of vintage posters from the civil rights movement, Black Panther movement, Malcom X and MLK enhanced the book as well.My only complaint if any was the fact that I was left wanting more, I would have enjoyed reading even more poems per person to gain a better sense of their style and message.

Thank you for this book! I got it from the library, first, as I was considering using it for a grad. class in poetics I teach (I'm focusing particularly on writers of color this time around). I ended up not using it for my class, but I bought my own copy of the book nonetheless, because it is stunning. Fabulous photos of the poets, along with an artistic statement from all of them, as well as examples of their work. This book includes some of the finest poets writing in America today, and it is a stunning book for lovers of poetry. If you don't the history of African American poetry and how that is tied to issues of social justice, well, you don't know American poetry, and this book might be a fabulous place to start exploring this rich literary history.

This book is a wonderful level 101 to the who's who from the Black Arts Movement with several more modern contemporaries also featured. I craved to see a more variegated spread of poets and writers of color from different walks of life (including Libya folk) but I was still moved by the short bios and poems.

Loved this book. Went back to that time when hardships were normal. Life was hard but everyone was always happy. I felt so inadequate after reading this. Those women worked so hard accomplished so much and had something to show for all their hard work. Great reading!

Not totally done with this book, but read the first few chapters and I'm really enjoying it. It gives a typical story of growing up in pioneer time. Reading it for Nebraska 150 books.

Short, not that good.

Pioneer Girl offers a glimpse of a bygone era in Nebraska. The book reads similarly to the works of Laura Ingalls Wilder although "Pioneer Girl" lacks the warmth and detail of the Little House books. The book is enjoyable, but it feels threadbare - lacking emotion and lacking the miniscule details of everyday life which make a community unique.

I've only read the first few pages and love it so far.

Having read Andrea Warren's previous books, especially the first verson of this book, I also enjoyed this one, especially her Afterword. Andrea does tremendous research. As a storyteller, I was thrilled she gave me permission to use her work in my presentation: Use It Up, Wear It Out, Do Without.Now, I'm reading her newest book,"Under Siege!" about three children who are telling their stories of the Civil War battle for Vicksburg.

I really enjoyed this book!

Dutch Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck provides us one of the most well-articulated, comprehensive, Biblically-minded, and honest approaches to theology that I've ever come across. This 4-volume magnum opus is not light reading by any means. However, there is a deep reward for diving in headfirst to Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics.What makes Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics truly special is the dedication to providing a detailed and careful view of nearly every angle on certain topics. For example, in regards to the doctrine of general revelation, Bavinck is sure to give us an idea of a variety of approaches to this doctrine, instead of his own opinion. Once he's given us the landscape, he penetrates it with Scripture until it is obvious which viewpoint stands above all. He relies heavily on great men of the faith like Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Calvin, and Zwingli to help him do the talking. Absolutely wonderful collection of biblical and systematic theology. I would recommend these volumes to anyone interested in better understanding the Scriptures and even just the way God reveals Himself and the world in His Word. You can't beat the price on these four volumes which contain endless memorable quotes that will make you appreciate the salvation of God even more.

Reformed Dogmatics is a wonderful addition to any Christian's library. Written from a Dutch Reformed perspective Bavinck's work presents the truth of Reformed Orthodoxy set within historical Christian understanding and opposed to the Roman Catholic view of his time. The value of Bavinck can sometimes be overshadowed by his wordiness--I sometimes find that I just want him to tell me what he thinks and not worry so much with the history of doctrine or with telling me what he doesn't think. All four volumes come with editorial prefaces to chapters that I find most helpful. Happy theologizing!!

Thankfully I've been blessed with a fairly extensive collection of works on Reformed systematic theology and having used them all at one point or another, Reformed Dogmatics is hands down the best systematic theology on my shelf. Bavinck's work addresses certain "problem passages" that are too often glossed over or ignored in other Reformed systematics and, he addresses these passages in a clear and straightforward manner. If I had to choose one Reformed systematic theology to keep, this would be the one.
