The study of dogmatics is essential to the Biblical scholar; to not study a systematic treatment of theology is to rob ourselves much insight into who God really is and what His Word says about Him. Dutch Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck provides us one of the most well-articulated, comprehensive, Biblically-minded, and honest approaches to theology that I've ever come across. This 4-volume magnum opus is not light reading by any means. However, there is a deep reward for diving in headfirst to Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics.What makes Bavinck's Reformed Dogmatics truly special is the dedication to providing a detailed and careful view of nearly every angle on certain topics. For example, in regards to the doctrine of general revelation, Bavinck is sure to give us an idea of a variety of approaches to this doctrine, instead of his own opinion. Once he's given us the landscape, he penetrates it with Scripture until it is obvious which viewpoint stands above all. He relies heavily on great men of the faith like Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Calvin, and Zwingli to help him do the talking. A brilliant writing style and composition of a daunting task, Herman Bavinck has sealed himself as one of my favorite theologians to learn from. It's highly academic, resourceful, and full of references. This will be a set I keep returning to over and over again.
I recommend this over the abridged version. This is a life long treasure trove of the richness and fullness of the Doctrine of the God, the Bible, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. Highly recommend. Soli Deo Gloria!
Absolutely wonderful collection of biblical and systematic theology. I would recommend these volumes to anyone interested in better understanding the Scriptures and even just the way God reveals Himself and the world in His Word. You can't beat the price on these four volumes which contain endless memorable quotes that will make you appreciate the salvation of God even more.
Reformed Dogmatics is a wonderful addition to any Christian's library. Written from a Dutch Reformed perspective Bavinck's work presents the truth of Reformed Orthodoxy set within historical Christian understanding and opposed to the Roman Catholic view of his time. The value of Bavinck can sometimes be overshadowed by his wordiness--I sometimes find that I just want him to tell me what he thinks and not worry so much with the history of doctrine or with telling me what he doesn't think. All four volumes come with editorial prefaces to chapters that I find most helpful. Happy theologizing!!
Thankfully I've been blessed with a fairly extensive collection of works on Reformed systematic theology and having used them all at one point or another, Reformed Dogmatics is hands down the best systematic theology on my shelf. Bavinck's work addresses certain "problem passages" that are too often glossed over or ignored in other Reformed systematics and, he addresses these passages in a clear and straightforward manner. If I had to choose one Reformed systematic theology to keep, this would be the one.

Bavinck is the best of the best of systamaticians. He keeps the main thing the main thing. Incisive and concise arguments. He is extremely clear and treats Scripture with the greatest care.
Bavinck has a way with words. I definitely consider this set a must-have for anyone serious about studying Reformed Theology.
