It's a good reference and some interesting recipes. Deducted stars for the entry on Red Root which is known as Amaranthus Retroflexus in the book but it looks like the author is talking about Ceanothus Americanus. Amaranthus Retroflexus can be medicinal but doesn't support the spleen. At worst, it might be laxative. Not a fatal mistake but it's wrong nevertheless. Not acceptable in a 'herbal apothecary' book. To author and publisher: Please note correction and vet the rest of the book!

Oh dear.I was flipping along, pretty happy with it all when I got to Red Root. Which the author specified as Amaranthus Retroflexus and then went on to say that other common names are New jersey Tea,. etc.These two things, Amaranthus and the medicinal Redroot, are not even in the same family, There is a red rooted pigweed (Amaranthus) but it is NOT the redroot of herbal medicine.While the sort of red root of Amaranth won't hurt you - it is considered a nutraceutical, if not a medicinal - it is really very different from the proper medicinal herb redroot. Redroot is in the Buckthorn family and is often called New Jersey Tea.Errors like this are unacceptable.I want my money back.

Unless you're very educated and knowledgable about medicinal herbs, this book is NOT for beginners. I am a beginner with a great interest in medicinal herbs but the herbs they listed in this book are some that you can't even acquire in the states. Love the photos and how easy it is to follow along but definitely have some prior reads before purchasing this one.

The Herbal Apothecary is a fantastic book that covers various herbs and methods of using them for medicinal purposes, including herbal tea blends, tinctures, etc. There are beautiful photos, useful charts, great recipes, and instructions on how to use various herbs and infusions. Overall, this is one of my favorite books on herbs, one that any herbalist should have.I'm aware of the mistake the author originally made with Red Root, but the whole book does NOT deserve to be negated because of one mistake. The entry has been edited since! This book is not worth one or even 3 stars in any way and I think it's irrational. So to make up for the 1 star reviews, I'm giving 5. This book is a valuable herbal resource. It's packed with really useful information for anyone interested in herbs and natural healing.

I have read many herbal books in my life; believe me. So, I can sincerely say that this book is by far one of the best that I have read. It was very easy to read and not boring. Reading this book made me feel that it was written especially for me. The in formations shared were valuable and personal to me. The book contains a wealth of life saving information written by a person who loves and respect the trade of herbalism and natural living. I have learned so much about herbal healing and remedies just by reading this book in a week ,than sitting in workshops for months and even years. And the price of the book is very economical;thanks. Much thanks and gratitude. Continue to motive and to teach the lovers of natural healing like myself. Eternal blessings !

great book. shows lot of detail, only wish it had more information for each plant. will need to find another book, can never be too careful.Does not show enough information on it's uses and how to prepare them for each use.Otherwise, photos are nice identifiers.A good herbal book will have Photo, usage, details, symptoms and interactions with herbs.

Bought the book on a whim since it's been something that I've been interested in for a while. This is definitely an awesome introductory book that gives a thorough introduction both to typical herbs that one might find, their effects, and the traditional methods in which they were administered (teas, tinctures, etc.). There are also a handful of typical recipes for different conditions listed in the back of the book. Unfortunately, some of these recipes include herb ingredients that aren't listed in the book which is why I give this book 4 starts instead of 5. I'm sure there was a reason and this is an introduction book, but why list a herbal recipe in your book but leave half of the herbs in the recipe out of the book?Still, this is a very good introductory book and the parts that were explained where explained very well.

This book was especially amazing because of its short but detailed passages about all of these future amazing athletes. If you haven't read this book yet it is great and it won't let you down! Also read "Kid Presidents" this book is also awesome and has short but detailed passages about all of these future presidents. this is a great book for a young sports fan -- and for parents. these are the unknown stories of famous athletes, and the struggles that kids and parents alike can really appreciate it. looking forward to reading more books in this series.

If you are looking for a fun, light-hearted read, THIS IS NOT IT. This is not only not a "laugh out loud" book, it isn't even funny although there are a few (very few) places in which is is slighly amusing. Mostly, it's sad and boring and depressing with characters that are not very well developed or likable. It just rambled. I gave it 2 stars because I did finish it. However, I was sorry that I wasted the time doing so instead of finding something else to read. It left me feeling a bit down when I was looking for a light, fun read after reading a couple of pretty heavy books.

What is it that we often admire about our favorite characters, especially in modern day books? It's the courage and audacity they have to start anew. To shake things up. To toss it all and dare to change their life into something they've always wanted down deep...or didn't know they needed, but was like a new dawn once they found it.Ol' Evie...a septuagenarian who is washed up. In a care home. Not really living life so much as more counting the days til it's all over. Her husband has passed, her only child, Brendan, married to a grumpy woman, Maura, and no grandkids. No hobbies. No job. No passion. No life.Her only lift each day is an early morning conversation with the Ukranian man who serves coffee and toast to all the elderly residents. Someone who doesn't treat her like she's already "mostly dead". (All reviews need a Princess Bride reference, no?)One day, she's had enough. She needs a holiday. Out of the care home she sneaks, with the idea of a few days away. To get out and away from the pull of apathy and extinction.And here is where we start to fall in love with this spunky woman. She's not savvy, not experienced in the world. I'm certainly not going spoil their story, but let's just say that a road trip through France will bring about so many changes if they are needed, and if you decide that life is worth living fully. And isn't it?Judy Leigh's characters in this novel are us in our worst moments: depressed and irritable, angry and quick to shift blame, prone to distraction from our pain and disappointment. But they are also us at our best: loving and funny, kind and devoted, hopeful and busy enjoying life to the full.Most of all, we see that luck isn't needed when we learn to enjoy the present. That each day is a gift, each minute a chance to be thankful, to look outside of ourselves to see the beauty and goodness all around us. To see that to give up is to miss out on our own life, and while none of us knows how many days we may have left on this earth, we can learn how to be grateful and embrace all that we've been today.

Evie is a 75 year old widow living in a Dublin nursing home. Her dutiful son Brendan and his wife Maura visit her conscientiously. But there’s plenty of life left in Evie and one night she decides that life will not be lived in a nursing home. So she leaves and embarks on an adventure, going first to Liverpool (after winning a nice nest egg on a horse race) and then to France where she discovers a new way of living.What is different about this book is that the heroine is 75 years old, nine years older than I am. With the gusto and stamina that I don’t think I ever had, even in my 20s. Her adventure has its ups and downs but it’s Evie’s attitude and insight that lifts the story, makes it memorable.The side story, of her son Brendan and his wife Maura, coming to their own realization about their lives, added to the book although Evie will be the character I will remember. Perhaps when I am 75....

This is an excellent book. Intense character studies. But I defy anyone to find this "laugh out loud funny" OR a ""romantic comedy"! It is an uplifting self discovery adventure born out of despair and loneliness and culminating in sadness and renewal. NOT A SINGLE LAUGH, not even one I could have missed!

Unlike some others, I found this to be a great read. I enjoyed Evie and her break from the boredom of the retirement home. I enjoyed her trying out new things. It did not have one laugh out loud moment after the other, but it is cute and serious at the same time. I found it to have some things to say that were relevant to me. I found myself wishing I were a bit less of an introvert. Does it have sad spots, yes, it is not a roaring comedy. For those getting older or thinking about the issues of getting older, it might be a good read.

Why this would be listed as a romance book or a funny book is a mystery as it is neither. The first half of the book is depressing and then the story comes to life. Evie's story is a life journey and this book is about much more than laugh-out-loud laughter. I would have enjoyed the book much more if I had not been waiting for it to change into something it was not. I do wish it had been focused more on the brave & positive Evie who has a lot to show us about living fully.

When her husband does suddenly Evie feels as if her life is over. She enters a care home for the aged where she is visited by her son and his overly critical wife. One day, irritated by the routine and the boredom, Evie decides she needs a day out. What follows is an adventure involving horse racing, Liverpool, France and love. This hilarious novel knows that while seventy is not the new forty, there's still time to shake things up

Age is just a number and you to enjoy everyday of your life. The message is clear to live life to the fullest, enjoy friendships and new experiences. This book could be a movie because it is so inspiring and well written. I enjoyed every page and Evie made me laugh and cry.

I love this book so much. This is an illustrated version of one of the great anthems of the Episcopal church. The hymn is normally only sung in church on All Saints Day but I use this on other days though in Children's Chapel and Sunday School. I sing this wonderful song with the children so that they will be exposed to it more than a handful of times during their childhood. The illustrations take the form of a children's play or pageant with the kids acting out the parts of the Soldier, the Queen, the Shepherdess on the green. I love being able to stop and talk about who was the Queen? Who is the soldier? What does it mean that we can meet saints just like me in shops or at tea? Anyone buying this book should listen to the song on Youtube or some similar place if you aren't familiar with it. Then sing it with your child and enjoy this wonderful hymn together.

This has been one of my very favorite books since I discovered it almost 15 years ago. The title is taken from an Anglican hymn of the same name, which is sung in many churches on the Sunday marking All Saints Day (November 1). The great part of the hymn is that it refers to real people, without mentioning their names. That was the joy of my discovery of the book, that those were in fact real people--and their biographies are given in the back. The crowning touch of the book is the illustrations--they are just delightful. Children love this book, but so do lots of us of a certain age.

What a delightful book this is! If you are familiar with the hymn by Lesbia Scott, you will find out who the various figures mentioned are: Doctor, Queen, Shepherdess on the Green, Soldier, Priest, and the one Slain by a Fierce Wild Beast. The book on which this one is based was soft cover, illustrated by Judith Gwyn Brown in black and white, and was dedicated to the rebuilding of the New York City Church, St. Luke-in-the-Fields which had been destroyed by fire. The present hard back book is in color and has been dedicated to the rebuilt St. Luke-in-the-Fields church. It contains the original hymn tune.

Wonderful illustrations, not bad for a hymn which was almost not included in the 1982 hymnal because of its "lack of profundity."

It is perfect. Arrived in good time. This is a very cute treatment of the old hymn and lots of fun for anyone who's ever been in a children's choir pageant.

Another great book for kids, and one especially if you like to play with the first verse during church...yea, that was me...

I bought this book to use in a Sunday School class on All Saints Sunday. It is just the right length, and the pictures are wonderful, showing children in choir robes behaving the way real kids do. There is a fascinating explanation in the back that tells you who all the saints in the song are. For example, the "shepherdess on the green" refers to Joan of Arc. I never knew that before. The lyrics to all 3 verses are included. Great little book!

Our priest had this book and showed it to me. I have six grandchildren and enjoy reading to them. They love singing the hymn "I Sing a Song of the Saints of God" now as we read/sing the book together.
