I love this book so much. This is an illustrated version of one of the great anthems of the Episcopal church. The hymn is normally only sung in church on All Saints Day but I use this on other days though in Children's Chapel and Sunday School. I sing this wonderful song with the children so that they will be exposed to it more than a handful of times during their childhood. The illustrations take the form of a children's play or pageant with the kids acting out the parts of the Soldier, the Queen, the Shepherdess on the green. I love being able to stop and talk about who was the Queen? Who is the soldier? What does it mean that we can meet saints just like me in shops or at tea? Anyone buying this book should listen to the song on Youtube or some similar place if you aren't familiar with it. Then sing it with your child and enjoy this wonderful hymn together.
This has been one of my very favorite books since I discovered it almost 15 years ago. The title is taken from an Anglican hymn of the same name, which is sung in many churches on the Sunday marking All Saints Day (November 1). The great part of the hymn is that it refers to real people, without mentioning their names. That was the joy of my discovery of the book, that those were in fact real people--and their biographies are given in the back. The crowning touch of the book is the illustrations--they are just delightful. Children love this book, but so do lots of us of a certain age.
What a delightful book this is! If you are familiar with the hymn by Lesbia Scott, you will find out who the various figures mentioned are: Doctor, Queen, Shepherdess on the Green, Soldier, Priest, and the one Slain by a Fierce Wild Beast. The book on which this one is based was soft cover, illustrated by Judith Gwyn Brown in black and white, and was dedicated to the rebuilding of the New York City Church, St. Luke-in-the-Fields which had been destroyed by fire. The present hard back book is in color and has been dedicated to the rebuilt St. Luke-in-the-Fields church. It contains the original hymn tune.
Wonderful illustrations, not bad for a hymn which was almost not included in the 1982 hymnal because of its "lack of profundity."
It is perfect. Arrived in good time. This is a very cute treatment of the old hymn and lots of fun for anyone who's ever been in a children's choir pageant.
Another great book for kids, and one especially if you like to play with the first verse during church...yea, that was me...
I bought this book to use in a Sunday School class on All Saints Sunday. It is just the right length, and the pictures are wonderful, showing children in choir robes behaving the way real kids do. There is a fascinating explanation in the back that tells you who all the saints in the song are. For example, the "shepherdess on the green" refers to Joan of Arc. I never knew that before. The lyrics to all 3 verses are included. Great little book!
Our priest had this book and showed it to me. I have six grandchildren and enjoy reading to them. They love singing the hymn "I Sing a Song of the Saints of God" now as we read/sing the book together.
