Shooting is a mental game since it doesn't require a lot of muscles or endurance. This book helps you break down what you do and how to think about what you are doing. It gives the mental framework for your shooting, which allows you to address the actions each shooter needs to develop.Some people don't understand or appreciate the mental aspect of this sport and won't like this. It's their loss as this read is worth the time every year. I reread and highlight this book on an annual basis.
I found this one of the most interesting books on sports I've read, because it allows you to sit inside a world class athlete's head while he performs and hear how and why he does things the way he does, and what his mental processes are during it all. Along the way, you learn what you should be doing to shoot better. He has analyzed what he's doing while he shoots, and breaks it down in great detail. Such as what he's seeing while he shoots, how he locates the target and aims so quickly, whether he depends on instinct or habit in matches (neither), and why he does all the things he does while shooting. And how awareness of what you're doing will raise your skills considerably.I'm a beginning shooter, and it has improved my shooting considerably. I don't plan to compete, but it's been satisfying to see how doing things the right way has improved my shooting so much so quickly. Another reviewer gave it a low review because he said he wanted Brian to just hurry up and get to the point. The point is obvious - aim correctly and pull the trigger without disturbing the sight image. Who needs a book to learn the obvious? The hard part is how to do those things, and why, and Brian does that job admirably. Learn from the best.
After going to Brian Enos' website and checking out the Amazon reviews, I have to agree; This is undoubtedly the best shooting book available! Chapters two and three alone are worth the price of any shooting materials thet you're apt to find.Mind you, I have no desire to enter competition shooting at this time but if I did, this would be the book that I would want to learn from. I thought that I was doing pretty good at the range but Practical Shooting Beyond Fundamentals is taking me even further.Because I have been granted a concealed handgun permit in my state, I thought that I had better learn to handle my weapon to near perfection. I began with Tactical Pistol Shooting by Erik Lawrence for situational drills, moved on to the Practical Shooting Handgun Techniques DVDs Vol 1-3 (which has an interview with Brian Enos btw) and then bought this book as a third stage to compliment the two other purchases. None were disappointing but Practical Shooting Beyond Fundamentals is the cream of the crop. I can feel myself getting better with each practice session.If you want to continually increase your shooting skills then this is the book for you. If you own a handgun for home or personal protection I still highly recommend this book.Brian will also autograph the book if you request it!
At first I thought this book was a misplaced study in philosophy, but I kept reading figuring that Brian was a champion and certainty knows more than me. The more I read and practiced the more I realized he is on to something in this book of his. Shooting really is almost all mental. The slightest drift in your thoughts changes your mental focus. The true aim of a pistol is significantly effected by the very slightest movements, and your thoughts effect your movements. This really is a good guide from one of the very best who I think sincerely has tried to communicate how to develop your shooting skills from mediocre to excellent.
Excellent read, but like most content heavy books it required reading, practice, then re-reading, practice, re-reading etc. Which is great. It's just tough to read straight through, especially if you're not already an advanced USPSA shooter that might grasp everything that Brian is attempting to communicate. My copy arrived a little bent, which I noted in the seller review, and without asking half of my purchase price was refunded. The seller (Enos) did not need to do this, but I appreciate it greatly as it shows that they care about every aspect of their customer's satisfaction. This is a strange book not really about shooting and the practical steps it takes to achieve a better score. The focus is really on inner thoughts and application of those ideas to shooting.Good book to get an insight on a top shooter and how he thinks, not so much in the kinetic skills of shooting.
Dated a bit but much of value that is not normally found for those who want to do more than own a handgun but, given the risks of ownership, want to be safe, confident and much more skilled with one. Too many owners buy one or several and fail to learn how to work one with confidence. The goal should be to at least go beyond the government skill level of typical police officers. Note how often police typically have many rounds go elsewhere than intended. Real preparation for active competition is a way to clarify what you imagine you can do with what you demonstrate. Reading this and paying attention to this will help most shooters avoid a lot of bad habits, typical faults, and common mistakes.
