If you already know Photoshop, this is a great book for reference. If you want to learn Photoshop, you will be lost and overwhelmed by page 5

This book is 732 pages in length. I have used Photoshop for a number of years. I have often wondered what a COMPLETE book about PS would look like. Well, now I know. This is THE complete book on the subject that every photographer should have in their bookcase. It is intelligently written and laid out. Obviously you will not finish this tome in one sitting. However the division of the material into smaller chapters makes it easy to stop and then continue later. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, it is written by an author that knows the subject well and has the ability to explain it to a wide audience in a straightforward manner.

The contents is great (as far as I got) as you would expect; however, the printing not so much. My purchase was missing about 30 pages form the end of the book which included the index. Specifically, the last page in my book was 712. The contents stated the index was on page 738 but my book had no page 738. This rendered it not useful at all as a reference book. Instructions in the first few pages indicated contacting the publisher with any problems. I did this and waited 2 weeks to get a response to contact the seller. The return is in process and going smoothly so far but delayed by 2 weeks. Once replaced, I expect the book to be the comprehensive and detailed reference expected based on what I had seen while I had it.

As to be expected from previous editions, this is my go-to source for anything technical about Photoshop. A must-have for anyone using the program at any level of depth.

Fairly good reading for intermediate people who have some knowledge of Photoshop.

I am always on the look out for new Catholic Bibles. If I'm being honest with myself, I'm a bit of a collector. There are several translations out there (NAB, NABRE, RSVCE and Douay-Rheims), and within those translations, there are different footnotes, maps, commentaries, etc. It makes me happy just thinking about it! Lately, I've been looking for a Bible for my son. Granted, he has several already, but I haven't quite found the one I am looking for. That's why when I heard about The Catholic Comic Book Bible, I was excited to read it.The Catholic Comic Book Bible is currently composed of two volumes - The Gospel of Luke and Acts of the Apostles. This is very fitting, because these two books actually read like one book broken into two parts. Each volume is $14.95, which can be a little steep, if this turns into a 73 volume set, but as a Bible collector/enthusiast, I wouldn't hesitate to pay it. The translation used is the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (RSVCE) and illustrations are done by Neely Publishing. The illustration style has a pencil-sketch feel to it and at times it comes off a little crude. However, it serves its purpose and is not so garish that it distracts from the text, which is where the real value lies.The book does a wonderful job of creating a Bible but giving it a fresh take for younger eyes. For starters, this isn't an abridged version or paraphrase, your child will get the complete text of Luke and Acts. Your child will also be able to reference exactly where they are, as there are headings on the top of the pages, chapter breaks, and each verse is individually numbered. The text is formatted in a way that the narrative parts and the spoken parts are distinctly separate and it creates a nice flow and presentation.There are also footnotes at the bottom that give alternate translations of the text as well.Overall, I am highly impressed with these two books. The Catholic Comic Book Bible is another example of the New Evangelization. This is a very appealing Bible for tweens and teens and perhaps even young adults. I hope to see this series continue, perhaps with some Old Testament books like Genesis or Exodus. If you have teenagers in your household and want them to read the Bible, then I recommend this series for you and them!

About the Author

GILES HOPKINS has trained in martial arts since 1973, studying a wide range of styles, from Tae Kwon Do and Shotokan karate to White Crane kung fu and T'ai Chi. He is a sixth-degree black belt in Okinawa Goju-ryu and holds a teaching certificate in Matayoshi kobudo from the Zen Okinawa Kobudo Renmei. He spent seven years living and training with Kimo Wall, president of Kodokan, in the lineage of Higa Seiko and Matayoshi Shinpo. In the 1980s, he accompanied Wall sensei to Okinawa and trained in kobudo under Matayoshi, and Goju-ryu under Higa Seikichi and Gibo Seiki of Shodokan. I have read Giles Hopkins’ blog (goju-ryu.blogspot) for several years now and have always found it thoughtful and challenging. So when he posted that he was working on a book, I pre-ordered it immediately.Now Hopkins is an English teacher and the book benefits from it. It is structured basically as a 200+ page argument for what the kata of Goju-ryu mean. How they all follow the same principles, sometimes showing remarkable similarity, and are self-referential. Just as you would expect from the people that put this style together. Each chapter on each kata can be seen as evidence for this argument, culminated in Appendix A and Appendix B where Hopkins lays out the tools/ideas used to construct this argument.In between discussing the bunkai, Hopkins includes short vignettes of his own training experiences, a nice touch which was enjoyable to read and (I think) made his argument stronger. It is clear that this view of bunkai – radically different than what most karate-ka practice- wasn’t something he came up with overnight, but instead was a slow realization over time.Fair warning, the book is dense. It is something I had to read slowly to understand and I took my time visualizing the kata and bunkai being discussed. This is definitely a book that is worth bringing TO the dojo to work through some of the ideas with a partner. You’ve heard of active listening? Well this is active reading. Be prepared to stand up and go through the kata in between paragraphs.If you have been studying Goju-ryu for a while or if you know most of the classical kata, I cannot recommend this text strongly enough. It will probably challenge you – I know Hopkins’ view of bunkai was not the one I grew up training with. But his argument has convinced me that Goju-ryu is a system that works together in a way that is consistent and does not treat any random bunkai equally. If you would like to see a different view of bunkai, then order this book.

There are some imaginative applications within these pages, indeed, some worthy of consideration, however, there is much regarding conflict the author leaves out.The Author seems to only know applications based off of basic Dojo style wrist grabs and set ups, which are not something one would see on the street; something that should automatically bring pause to any informed reader and could be dangerous for any uninformed reader should they actually subscribe to the Author's line of thinking and, God forbid, actually have to apply themselves on the street.I tend to agree that Kata needs to flow together and should have one simple application per segment, with entering, controlling, and finishing moves, and with A LOT of tweaking the aplications presented here can be cleaned up and made practical.One needs to take into account resistance, countering, flowing into different sections of Kata based on live resistance, plus things like Adrenal Stress, fight, flight, or freeze.Actual self defense scenarios, which is what Kata are designed to deal with, not formalized or stylized application as presented here.Also, the addiction of knee strikes wherever one sees Neko Ashi Dachi is a bit of a stretch because it does not fit the Kata.Why would it be 'hidden' when other things are not? It seems this is just a device for the Author to make sense of things, almost a cop out which completely ignores the utility of stances as they are.Apologies, but I cannot, in all honesty, give this more than two stars.

Very informative book and prospect of Gikes’ interpretation on how kata speaks to him and how he believes kata and it’s bunkai should be applied. I like the pictures they help connect and describe his bunkai that sometimes is different to describe in WORDS!This book is very frank and Giles Hopkins throws some “pot shots “ at others and their prospective of bunkai.. I find it to be humorous.😊 nothing wrong with a little controversy!!Some of the applications probably would be best described via video because it’s too difficult to describe in words. Overall I thought it’s a excellent informative read for all GOJU PRACTITIONERS!!!!

Excelent and well writen book, about diferent aplications of kata. In other words Bunkai. This book not only explains the 12 traditional katas of the Goju Ryu system, but also talks about tradition and history. Also contains some wonderfull pictures of the author with Matayoshi Sensei and Kimo Wall Sensei. I just love it!!!!!

This really is an excellent book for any Nahate practitioner. I have been reading through carefully and working through the applications of the kata I had been given. As a Shito-Ryu practitioner with past experiences with a Goju-Ryu instructor, I found the book to have many useful ways in which to look at kata and bunkai. The book is professional in presentation and well written compared to other martial arts texts out there.

I started training goju ryu with Giles Hopkins and Kimo Wall in the late 1980's. This book is phenomenal, at 30 years of training, I am still learning new things. The book is extremely well researched and demonstrates that countless hours of training and working out the applications for the kata went into its creation.

I am feeling a bit sad I just come to the end of this really great book. I know I will be dipping in and out of it for years to come.

Every Bunkai for every Kata is given in extreme detail. Adding many more years of training to my routine.

This is Polacco at her best. I have all her books. My grandchildren choose her books to read or to listen to over anything else. If you do not have ALL of her books in your library, what are you waiting for here?

Wonderful and appropriate for preschool to third grade (4 to 8 yrs of age). Purchased for an elementary school library as an honorific for my mother-in-law by my wife (a working speech and language clinician) in consultation with a team of elementary media specialists.

Excellent book for cultural diversity curriculum.

I am a lace maker so finding Ms. Polacco's book was a delight. It is a very interesting story as well.

I haven't even finished yet (30 pages left), but when I logged in and saw I could review this book, I had to say Something.Most of the gardening books I have been reading lately (Square Foot Gardening in particular) have been Extremely boring, lacking detail and repeating the same things over and over, as if most gardeners have a deficient IQ.This book is actually packed with Tons of useful information, and it is Concise, so you aren't reading tons and tons of 'filler' material to make the book 500 pages long.There is a section dedicated to different types of compost bins and the pros/cons of each. There is even one complete instruction set if you were so inclined to follow it. But the rest were high level designs, leaving the details to be determined by the reader (which is perfect because no compost bin will be one-size-fits-all).Stu covered more ways to Activate (heat up) your compost pile that I ever anticipated. Even comparing the benefits and drawbacks of every type of manure you will likely be able to find.I will buy any other book by Stu Campbell, and will certainly consider any book published by Storey's, as they get directly into the material and don't make the reader suffer through repeated information.Fantastic presentation. I would give 6 stars if I could.

Good book for the basics of composting. I'm brand new to composting, so I really needed background to get me started. That said, the book is really focused on people who are using more "traditional" composting heaps or bins that sit directly on the ground with no bottom. There is literally only a single paragraph regarding barrel/tumbler composting. That having been said, the information I got was exactly what I needed to get started and now I feel like I can kind of follow my instinct with the tumbler insofar as it differs from a heap.

Perfect for the beginning composter. It is written for composting dummies like us that want to keep as much out of the landfills as possible and this is one way to do it. The author has taken the time to explain the in's and out's of what you can include in the raw compost and how to ensure the right mixture to create great compost for your plants and garden. I had a relative ask why I wanted to compost since I no longer have any vegetable gardens. What I do have is a lot of bushes, trees and flowers. With the weather in the Texas Hill Country going from 32 degrees one night to 70 degrees the next day and over 100 degrees in the summer, compost is a necessity to keep a balnce of nutrients and preventing the roots from freezing and water waste during the summer.

My spouse and I are just starting out with composting, and this book is a no-nonsense, approachable guide for folks like us. Campbell explains different ways to compost and how the science of composting makes these methods effective using clear, simple language. I have read other composting guides that made it sound impossible to turn kitchen scraps and yard waste into rich compost for the garden, and this guide is the opposite: Campbell gives good information while reassuring readers that we can make composting work for us. The anecdotes he includes make it an engaging read as well--I would never have thought I'd spend an evening excitedly reading through a book about making things rot, but I did!

Composting, in case you aren't terribly familiar with it yet, is simply the practice of allowing waste matter to rot and decompose until it's fit to be tilled right into the soil. However, while the basic concept is as old as mother nature and often very easy to execute, it also helps to know more about it. What materials should you compost, and which should you avoid? Do you have to worry about animals or flies in your compost? How do you make sure your compost will turn into dirt and not a slimy, stinky sludge?While nearly every gardening book these days has a section on composting and most of these are enough to get you by, Stu Campbell's Let It Rot! is an entertaining, folksy and in-depth take on the art that will see you through nearly any foreseeable difficulty. I was certainly able to successfully compost with the simpler directions in other books, but there's information in here I wish I'd had back when I first started. For instance, now I know the cobweb-like stuff that I feared was mold was the natural activity of Actinomycetes, a part-bacteria, part-fungus organism that aids decomposition in certain parts of a compost pile.Mr. Campbell's book also introduces a great many different types of compost piles and composters that you can use, depending on what you're trying to accomplish, what area you have to work with, or what you're trying to decompose. He also suggests many ways to use compost in and around your garden, and how to get the most out of it. I'm glad I picked up Mr. Campbell's book, because I learned an incredible amount of new material!

A decent book for a beginner. More science talk than I expected but I guess thats necessary to start. As a compost tumbler user I was hoping for more info about that technique but there was only a short paragraph in the entire book about it.

Love this book, it's easy to read, the text is a great font, illustrations are fun and add to the knowledge being gained. I found it added to my experiences in composting and gave me more ideas plus I like the various lists incorporated within. Overall it was a good read when you are getting started composting or want to expand your knowledge or even just as a reference. Love this book and it's been added to my home library book shelf.

It's a good book on it's subject. It was recommended to me as an easy basic composting guide. A bit more complex than I was hoping it would be. The author states at the beginning...."Just skip the complex parts in the book if they slow you down." (my words, not his) . So I will be doing that in the future. It's winter now....so haven't spent much time with the book.
