I am NOT a Cowboys fan and I while I’d love to praise this book for lifting the veil of achievement and revealing the underlying filth, it’s not the reason I enjoyed reading BOYS WILL BE BOYS. No, I found Jeff Pearlman’s book an enjoyable read because it was entertaining, revealing and remarkably balanced even though it takes the veneer off the “America’s Team” dynasty of the 1990s.Personally, my enjoyment of following professional football ended in the 1980s as the 90s ushered in the new (and ongoing) phase of big money, massive media attention and selfishness compounded by stratospheric egos; an era defined by individuals outshining teams. After reading BOYS WILL BE BOYS, I now clearly see that the seeds for this change were sown when Jerry Jones decided to purchase the Dallas Cowboys. There are plenty of examples of outrageousness associated with Super Bowl champions (the ’85 Bears come to mind), but the NFL “dynasties” associated with the 60s (the disciplined Packers), 70s (the blue collar Steelers) and 80s (the nice-guy 49ers) don’t hold a candle to the outrageous swagger associated with the Cowboys of the 90s.While this is the first Pearlman book I’ve read, his other books reveal a penchant for tackling more controversial sports subjects (Barry Bonds and Roger Clemons, for example). I was wondering if this book on the Cowboys was going to be an opinionated hatchet job to discredit a team with a huge fan base (and a hate-base that is arguably even larger). Instead of providing raw meat to Cowboy-haters (a sure bet for a bestseller?), Pearlman offers a refreshingly fair analysis of the 90s Cowboys that heaps equal doses of praise and scorn. Looking at this team and all its parts (players, coaches and owner) was like opening-up and examining an overstuffed Chipotle burrito … a messy pile of meat, rice and beans neatly wrapped by a soft tortilla. Starting with Jerry Jones purchasing the Cowboys, readers are taken on an entertaining ride that accounts for a good amount of football (three Super Bowl wins) and a whole lot of drama and decadence … a “sports-opera”. Many may know the framework of this dynamic team; its foundation is comprised of household names and sports legends (Jimmy Johnson, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman, etc.). But, rather than simply telling a story of how these men contributed to Dallas’ success, Pearlman weaves mini-biographies of each individual added to the storyline … revealing and intimate, these background stories certainly add depth to the book and explain (not justify) so much of the headline-making behavior I always associated with this team. I had no idea how bad the childhoods were for so many players and especially coach Barry Switzer.Pearlman pulls most of his material from a large number of former Cowboy players. But, there is a noticeable absence of certain names from his pool of sources, names that comprise a bulk of the book’s content: Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Deion Sanders and Charles Haley. With that being said, contributions from Michael Irvin and Barry Switzer certainly add a degree of credibility (which is important, considering the scandalous nature of so many off-field events being detailed often included them).So what was so appealing about BOYS WILL BE BOYS? What I enjoyed so much about this book was that I received a better understanding of what those Cowboy teams were really all about … the good and the bad. While I remember snickering about the Cowboys 1-15 record in Johnson’s first season as coach, I appreciated reading how Johnson turned things around so quickly with his respected, but ill-received heavy-handed coaching style. Additionally, there is plenty of football discussed, including candid peer-commentary detailing the varying degrees of talent and work ethic of teammates. It is truly interesting how such a diverse group of players functioned so well (for a while) and how things started to unravel at the seams when Switzer replaced Johnson as the coach and an undisciplined team won a Super Bowl on sheer talent. Unlike other accounts of storied teams, those Cowboys seemed to celebrate their success, fame and wealth like no other and it eventually caught up with them (retribution). The mix of athletic achievement, big money, egos, drugs, alcohol, hookers, personality disorders and tension are the ingredients that make this book hard to put down. It is evident that the ego-driven Jerry Jones and the larger-than-life personas of “Prime Time”, Irvin and others are responsible for ushering in the materialistic, greedy and gaudy nature that constitutes the NFL we know today.It really doesn’t matter if you love or hate the Cowboys to enjoy BOYS WILL BE BOYS … I don’t even think it matters whether or not you like football. This book is simply a well-written and entertaining group of stories that reveals what really lurks behind the façade of glory associated with winning big in (American) professional sports.

This book is a must read, not just for Cowboys fans, but for all football fans! This book gives you terrific insight into what life was like both on and off the field as a member of the Cowboys’ dynasty of the 90’s. This team featured so many big personalities including Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin, and owner Jerry Jones and this book gives you look into their lifestyles during this time. The number of people that the author interviews for this book gives such a unique perspective into the lives of these guys. It covers everything from the off-field issues of drugs and fights to the on field success that the Cowboys were so famous for in the 90’s.

Jeff Pearlman is one of my favorite authors and a premiere sports writer. He captures the decadence of this group of players during their great run. I watched this team during this era but had no real idea of the goings on behind the scenes. This book changed my perspective on some of the players and the coaches of these teams and not always for the better. Very fun read.

Showtime felt like newspaper clippings pieced together. This one was better organized but essentially the same book on a different sport as it talks about sex, drugs and the dysfunction of a championship team.I am likely not the intended market for this book so take these comments with a grain of salt. However, being a sports nut and having read and enjoyed books such as the Jordan Rules (Sam Smith), Dream Team (Jack McCallum), the Book on Basketball (Bill Simmons and Golf Books by Bob Rotella, I will likely continue to read similar books in the future.

I have,nt finished this book yet. So far the book is a must read for any football fan. Jeff pearlman does a great job in discribing the personality of the cowboy players and coaches. What he paints is not always very pretty. Football is a dog eat dog sport, where you can loose your job to someone else in a minute. Truth be told it is a butal sport. It is tough for the sport fan to feel sorry for either the player or coach

I.Enjoyed the book. But, it is really a more detailed account of.a.couple of 30 for 30 and Football Life documentaries about Jimmy, Jerry and the Cowboys. Certainly, it is another example of success ruins teams. In football, five great years is a dynasty. Football takes a lot.of people working together. In contrast , read books about Jordan"s Bulls and you can see how one player and the right coach and front office can build a dynasty.

About the Author

Dan Stefanica has been the Director of the Baruch MFE Program since its inception in 2002, and is the author of the best-selling A Primer For The Mathematics Of Financial Engineering and A Linear Algebra Primer for Financial Engineering: Covariance Matrices, Eigenvectors, OLS, and more, and co-author of 150 Most Frequently Asked Questions on Quant Interviews. First, primer means you have to have the fundamental math out of the way before you dive into this book. If you are fuzzy about what integration means, or the basic form of differentation then start with Calculus first. Though I think the author does a great job of teaching Calculus in this book.This book bridges a very important gap between math and finance, and that is from the pure theoretical math to applied finance. People do not realize that financial engineering employs some of the most advanced theories in both theoretical math and probility. Which is why Wall Street is looking for physicists and engineering students for quantative finance.This is a great self study, or textbook which instructs the student how to apply their math background to finance. The author does an excellent job of teaching the math, while using financial engineering as the examples and problems. Which in the end takes you from basic Calculus to Taylor series and Lagrange.Actually it would be a great way to teach calculus in the future. Instead of using theoretical physics and the sciences for examples and problems, simply use finance.The psuedocode is just a bonus in my mind. This is an excellent math book for students, even if they are not planning on a future in financial engineering because it does illustrate applied math like no other textbook.

I own this book for the last 5 years and it is one of the most popular in my library.I originally used it while I was a student and nowadays as practitioner, it is my go-to book to refresh my memory for most of the covered topics.Dan has a clean, easy to read, with full proof explanations and examples style, which helps the reader to quickly and rigorously understand the basic ideas and concepts.The book contains a plethora of topics that any quant in finance will come across at some point. The selection helps the reader to gain a robust foundation before moving to more advance constructions (from integrals -> continuous probabilities -> risk neutral estimation and properties of Black-Scholes as well as other topics e.g. Taylor expansion, numerical methods, bond mathematics, portfolio construction, etc.).I would highly recommend it.

It covers a broad range of topics (especially options) in math finance and the level of details is incomparable. It provides an alternative to stochastic calculus. I personally found the exposition about finance concept is very clear. The style is down-to-the-earth. It has quite a lot technique details which I couldn't find in many other math finance books. I hope author can write another book about portfolio optimization which I would purchase in no time.

The author writes crisply and clearly and not only objectively describes his personal journey to becoming a fighter, but skillfully incorporates historical and literary references, as well as scientific information, all of which provide added texture and information to his subjective observations. A provocative, stimulating effort, recommended not only for fans of the sport, but for those interested in the psychoogy of humans' predisposition to aggressiveness and/or brutality.

Before reading this book, I knew little about mixed martial arts, believing it to be barbaric, cruel, brutal, etc. But Josh Rosenblatt can write and he gave me a new appreciation of the sport and the sacrifices required to participate. He chronicles his transformation from a thirty something out of shape hedonist, pacifist intellectual to a man prepared to inflict and endure extreme physical and mental punishment. Why did he do this? You will have to read the book and I highly recommend it. Throughout his journey filled with personal doubts and backslides leading up to his official fight in a cage, the author educates and enlightens us with physiology and anatomy research as well as historical, literary and spiritual references. Rather than distract, these references explain why the journey was so important. The description of the months, weeks, days, hours and minutes leading up to the fight kept me reading and I could not put the book down. I look forward to reading more of this author's books.

A great read! Loved the writing. Book arrived. I picked it up in the AM and couldn’t put it down until i finished. I could care less about MWAA fighting but I loved the book! It’s more about what it means to live. Some good interesting history of boxing, history of writers relationship with boxing and history of kicking Nazi’s asses, too!

This book took swings at my reality, slowly and methodically like Poe's pendulum- with his observations on fighting cutting me, barely at first, forcing me to ask myself if I was truly living- fully experiencing all life has to offer. Then offering a rational reprieve as the pendulum swings away and he objectively took a more reasonable and rational approach to his journey. Then cutting again as he goes back to how alive fighting- and courting death and destruction- makes him feel. The suspense of the pending fight becomes greater than the fight itself, and it was a thrilling tale and exploration of what it means to be alive.

I found this book a very personal and well written exposition about growing up fearful in family that feared violence and carrying the fear with anger into adulthood.After submerging the angst with alcohol,,sex and drugs for years stumbling upon and becoming intrigued by the idea of learning martial arts and boxing as a more direct way. We follow his journey in that pursuit

Such a brilliant book on the nature of fighting. Funny, philosophical, informative. You are totally with Rosenblatt every step of his journey. By the end, I was better able to understand the reasons man is drawn towards physical combat, the difference in mindset between your average person and the men and women who step into the ring/cage and do this professionally, and ultimately, the personal journey and mental battle anyone who chooses this path decides to take on. An inspiring book.

The disease process is given a once-over-lightly approach, but boy, does this ever have a ton of recipes! If that's what you want, this is it for you. If you want things explained a little more, opt for the Dummies book on pre-diabetes.

I think the information they have in there is good. I was just shocked to see that more than half of the book is recipes! I don't mind the recipes. I think they are important. But I would have liked more info about combating insulin resistance and less recipes. Of course, it could mean that the writers feel that the recipes (and eating) are the bulk of the fight against insulin resistance. I've been struggling with it for a few years now, and I'm frustrated beyond belief. Most books echo each other. I feel like I'm missing something major. I can't complain about the info given in this book. It's good, sound information. I just wish there was more of it.

I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. I exercise 6 days out of 7, mostly walking, some water aerobics. I have lost 30 pounds and my lab tests are looking much better than they were 6 months ago. I wanted a book to refer to for facts and some recipes as well. This book suited my needs.

This has good basic information and many recipes. As other reviews noted, it is primarily a recipe book. It does not include menu plans.

I love the Everything Guide books, they have never disappointed me. This one has been read by several friends, and we all gained a lot of good information from it. It is easy to understand, and definitely a keeper.

If you've never read Andrew Murray you own it to yourself and to the Lord to give him a try. There have been numerous times his words of wisdom were used by God to bring me to a higher place in Christ, and 2 instances when they were absolutely indispensable. I'd experienced, or was experiencing things I didn't understand and feeling led to his material, I found there on the pages clearly the understanding I was in need of. Things I've never heard anyone address in over 25 plus yrs in Christianity, things I thought I'd heard the Holy Spirit saying to me on occasion over those yrs but just blew it off cause no one seemed to think it was God...now I know it was Him. I am so thankful for this man writings, words can't express it. Thank you Father!

I'm a newly minted hospitalist Physician Assistant practicing in a fairly high volume hospital. A large percentage of my work centers around admitting patients from the ER and putting in their initial orders. This book is a life saver! I literally use it everyday!! Great investment to help make sure you don't miss any pertinent labs or give IV fluids unnecessarily. Great book!

This book has been a lifesaver for me as a new hospitalist physician assistant that a local hospital. He does a great job of making you think about things you may have missed for the major diagnosis and conditions that you would admit patients for. infectious disease however doesn't agree all the time with the antibiotic regimen that the book recommends, but overall it is still a great book and a must-own for anyone who works in the hospital setting.

Best book for new hospitalist. My notes practically write themselves.

One of my residents pointed out this little beauty. Completely changes the way you write notes and provides an instant checklist of things that need to be addressed in the top 1000 patient complaints. Starts with pertinent Questions that need to be asked, examination findings, lab studies and then goes on to basic management plans. Whilst it may seem that 2006 is outdated, because it really covers all bases I find that it is more than enough for medical students, and from what my resident said, interns too.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!! I would NOT have survived call days or working nights during my Intern year without this book. I APPROVE 1,000 times!!!!! Just trust me.

This is actually a pocket sized book. It may be just fine, but disappointed with size as I had expected something a bit more substantial.

This is a fantastic resource for all medical students and first year residents. Although some of the information (less than 5-10%) is outdated, I would still highly recommended. 5 stars!

This is my favorite book nowadays. I work in a hospital setting as a NP. Has help me a lot.
