Since I turned two years old at the time the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan I thought it would be interesting to read about what was taking place in the world at the time of my birth and in the years immediately following. Harry Truman came into the presidency with an extremely humble attitude and his wife dreaded the thought of this taking place. So much happened during the following four years and President Truman was up to the challenge and the American public viewed him as one just like they were. It was his wife Bess who first used the term "accidental president" stating he could no longer be thought this way because he was later elected on his own merit. Pilot Paul Tibbets used the name Enola Gay after his mother for the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. Such tidbits of information and others are found throughout the book. This book isn't a full length biography of President Truman's life. After a general introduction to Truman's early life the main part of the book is limited to his first four years in office. What I especially liked about the book is that it held my interest because I found it to be very readable for someone with a general interest in history. You need not be a scholar by any means to enjoy this book.

This is my third book I have read by this author and one thing its for sure, is he knows how to make his subject matter come alive. His previous books on Willow Run and the La Mans battle between Ferrari and Ford were just tremendous. This book is outstanding.Taking what Baime claims is four of perhaps the four most consequential months of any presidency, a point of which is probably correct, this book starts off with FDR's surprising death in Warm Springs, Georgia as World War II reaches its penultimate moments with the collapse of Germany and the beginning of the end of the Empire of Japan. Though the book claims only 4 months, you still get a portrait of Truman the man, his beginnings and his rise to the presidency.A humble man put in extraordinary circumstances, Truman somehow navigated the tough course. While not college educated, Truman was still shown to be a man of history and of music. Though I have read the mammoth McCullough biography, this book is just as outstanding. These four months were pretty momentous, and yet Truman had to navigate the end of the war, the Chinese civil war, and the domestic economy as well (though not the subject of this book). Amazing sense of the man and his predilections. This book is so effortless to read and a pleasure. Highly recommended,

We have all read good books and great books from a historical perspective. This book is one, if you please, that is an absolute must read. The story of HST and the burdens he had to bear after the death of FDR (and having served only 82 days as VP) are profound. As the book indicates, his first four months after taking the oath of office were four months that changed the world. No other president in history faced the critical challenges that Truman faced (much less the constant comparisons to FDR). Fighting many things such as "who the hell is Harry Truman?" was just one of the hurdles. Crisis after crisis and Harry got it done.Applause to the author, A.J. Baime for telling this gripping narrative of HST when the world was still in flames.

I enjoyed this book very much. The author writes well and keeps you turning the pages.I suspect that we will never see the likes of a Harry Truman in American presidential politics. While I did read McCollough's complete biography years ago, it was refreshing to revisit one of my favorite presidents. I was born while he was in office. All the more unusual was that Truman was never a success. He had a farm that failed, as well as a business that went under and never had the money to buy a house. After the White House, they lived in his mother-in -laws house in Independence. Add to this that his wife's mother did not like him and thought he would never amount to much.He worked hard and was humble, but he was tough on the Russians and they could not believe that FDR was gone and this Missouri rooster was crowing loudly against their ambitions in Europe. He was the kind of man you did not want to trifle with and I respect that about him.He made the decision to use atomic weapons on the Japanese in order to quickly conclude the war and likely save a quarter of a million of young soldiers that would have to invade Japan and fight an ugly battle. He took all these responsibilities on himself, working a grueling schedule and trying to read everything he could to prepare himself for the heavy work of international diplomacy. He pulled it off and we will never see the likes of this again. It struck that the author made the statement toward the end of the book that America peaked with the surrender of the Japanese and will never see those lofty heights again. I have to agree with him. America has seen her best days. All the rest is polite conversation.I highly recommend this book.

There once lived a man named Rakai Pikatan. He was the man who puts an end to the mighty Sailendra dynasty in Java, and in the year 856 he ordered his men to build a temple that match Sailendra's masterpiece, the Borobudur. The temple has since been known as the Prambanan.Few centuries later in 1357, Majapahit's king Hayam Wuruk appeared to attempt to forge an alliance with the Pajajaran kingdom in West Java, by promising to marry princess Pitaloka, the daughter of the Pajajaran king. But when the Pajajaran wedding party arrived in Majapahit's capital, prime minister Gajah Mada informed them that the princess would merely becomes a concubine and that they should surrender to their East Java overlord. Surrounded by hostile Majapahit forces, the Pajajaran men bravely refused and put up a fight, but they were all eventually slaughtered, including the princess.Meanwhile, in 1811 the archipelago almost had its independence from the colonial Dutch. Following Napoleon's attack on the Netherlands, the British decided to consficate and disband Napoleon Dutch's colonial grab in the East Indies. The British originally gave the order to British governor-general in Calcutta, Lord Minto, to "overwhelm the Dutch forces, destroy their fortifications, dish out their guns and ammunition to the locals, and hand the island over to the Javanese." But what prevent the independence was one act of disobedience by Lord Minto. He dismantled the Dutch forces within a few weeks, but then installed Raffles as his lieutenant-governor in the archipelago with free rein to rule the colony as he pleased. And the rest, as they say, is history.History is messy, brutal, and oftentimes blurry. For many centuries to come the temples of Prambanan were buried and the locals only know the folktale version of its history - where a man built a thousand temples overnight as a condition to marry princess Roro Jonggrang - and they do not even know who Rakai Pikatan is.Students of history in Indonesia would also likely to learn Majapahit as the peaceful empire that unite the whole archipelago. While in reality, they obtain the majority of their territories by force and in some instances even only claim them without ever setting foot on the land. And just like Srivijaya before them, Majapahit was more of a powerful kingdom claiming control to a small population of traders and port cities beyond their stronghold capital, rather than an empire. And these misconceptions of history sums up how historical accounts are being perceived in Indonesia. This book is about the Rakai Pikatans of Indonesian history, and not the Roro Jonggrangs. About the likes of kingdom of Majapahit (not the empire) and its day to day struggles and ugly realities. It is about the intriguing origins of many historic names, the lost opportunities and the very human decision made by the likes of Lord Minto that changed the course of history. It is in short an attempt to straightening up the facts of Indonesia's past. The book is also about the forgotten truth. About the equally important role Sutan Sjahrir played beside Soekarno and Hatta in the independence movement for Indonesia. About Budi Utomo that began as an organisation to lobby for more education for Indonesia's elite class in a Dutch-controlled government, and not an anti-colonial revolutionary organisation as they usually perceived. It is about how the Japanese was sympathetic with Indonesian independence movement and was actually administering towards an independence for Java in September 1945 (with the rest of Indonesia follow suit shortly), before Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed a month before that and Indonesian revolutionaries had to take matters into their own hands for independence. But most of all, it is a book that explains every sequences that lead to many different realities in Indonesia today. For instance, contrary to popular believe, the Dutch were actually respectful to the local royal kingdoms during their occupation, they even forged useful alliances with some of them that mutually benefit everyone. And it was exactly these alliances that caused these kingdoms' eventual demise, with the simple fact that since almost all of them were allies with the Dutch they resisted the national independence cause that was centered in Jakarta, that is, apart from Yogyakarta. Which is why after the independence only Yogyakarta's sultanate survived and go down in Indonesian history as one of the heroes. All in all, it is a well-crafted and very well-researched book, written in a careful ways so that the facts, the speculations and the myths are clearly distinguished. It is the most complete historical account on Indonesia that I have read so far, and it is the number one book I would recommend to anyone who wants to know about Indonesia.

You could take someone who had no interest in Indonesia, force them to read the first 5 pages, and they'd be hooked on this fascinating archipelago thanks to Hannigan's lively narrative. He weaves it all together, somehow. I was sad to arrive at the end of the book, as I could have kept on reading for another few hundred pages.

This is an excellent book. I enjoyed it very much. Hannigan told me everything I wanted to know about Indonesia in a straight forward and entertaining way. The remarkable thing to me about Indonesia, and really South Asia is how nice people can be on the surface and how mean they can be to each other under some circumstances. From 1965 until the present "democratic" era millions of Indonesians killed each other. Vietnam, Cambodia, to some extent Laos experienced similar violence. Thailand, where I live, hasn't had the same scale of violence, but the "Land of Smiles" can be pretty tough on its own people too. Asia is wonderful but go to bed early.

An excellent book covering the time from the first inhabitants to present day. One criticism I have is the lack of detail covering the fight for independence from the Dutch. If you travel round Indonesia many roads and public buildings are named after freedom fighters but these are not mentioned in the book However I concede that a brief history cannot include much detail of every period.

While professional scholars will likely have few kind words for this adumbrated history, most readers will be drawn along by clever turns of phrase & the journalistic pace that makes this volume eminently readable, indeed a veritable page turner ...

I'm heading to Indonesia on a media trip to cruise the islands, and wanted a solid background on this complex place. I have been fascinated with the extraordinary history, written in good clear prose. It's a complex place needing a guide who can explain the politics, the history, the people in a way that a foreigner can begin to appreciate the tapestry that is this huge archipelago.

Beautifully written. A truly comprehensive history of Indonesia would have to appear in 6 volumes so that I'm happy to be introduced to this country by this book and gain some access to its past in such an engaging way. Bravo!

I found this book useful in understanding some of the cultural diversity of Indonesia. It answered many of the questions that arose while visiting the country. I would recommend it to anyone visiting from a Western country. The narrative is engaging. Delicate social and historical matters are treated, at least from my European-grown perspective, objectively. The book is brief enough to be read during the long travel time required to reach Indonesia from the West, and brief enough to leave the reader wanting to know more about this country.

Aaron Lansky’s Outwitting History presents an interesting counter-trend to modern habits of reading: in an age when physical books are being less and less read, Lansky has spent his whole life rescuing Yiddish books.Lansky’s account of rescuing the literature of a quickly dying language has both sad and triumphant overtones. As he first starts collecting Yiddish books, many Yiddish writers and readers are alive, if not old, and Lansky gets to see glimpses of their world. As an American Jew, Lansky knows what he has missed: the world of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Yiddish, working together to form a seamless world.Through Herculean effort, Lanksy and others eventually create the Yiddish Book Center, a home to a million and a half Yiddish books. Yet that world is gone, and after the Center is built, Lansky has some interesting and sad things to say about Jewish continuity, or the lack thereof. All in all, this is a fascinating book that documents the steady decline of a civilization and in relatively short space of time, and a group of people’s determination to save a piece of it.

One of the best true stories I’ve read in a long while. Reads like an adventure story yet the depth of insights, the sweetness of the humor, the panoramic vision and dedication of the author to save this literature for future generations tells a tale that most Americans know little or nothing about. And a must read for anyone interested in the culture of and way of life almost lost in the ashes of the flames of hatred that engulfed so much of our world culminating in Second World War.

As a young student Lansky began the herculean task of rescuing the Yiddish language and its literature. In this book he tells the story of his efforts (along with a colorful cast of volunteers and supporters) that have made the Yiddish Book Center the great success it is today. In this book he tells his story intelligently, with an engaging mixture of humor and pathos. It is entertaining, informative, and inspiring.I have no hesitation giving it five stars.

An amazing book that really was an eye-opener in regards to a part of Jewish history that tells the story of not only of our Yiddish-speaking relatives in the US but an almost forgotten history of Jewry in Eastern Europe. Not only was our culture practically wiped out during the Holocaust but then almost again, with the destruction of these books that Mr. Lansky and his zamblers had the foresight to save. Really a must read!

In reading Lansky's book, I experienced the similar thrill of an evening of going from one Jewish home to another eating the first superb meal followed by an extravaganza of delectable dishes in the next homes, and then mouth watering desserts at yet another home. These extraordinary feasts represent the outstanding features of Lansky's book. He examines the Yiddish language, culture and diversity, and all who have contributed to making these important aspects of Judaism persevere over centuries. He brought to life Jewish writers, scholars, philosophers, politicians, artists, philanthropists, comedians, artists, survivors of the Holocaust, ordinary Jews living decent lives, and decades of Jews lost in pogroms, ousted from almost every country in the world, despised, vilified, tortured and ultimately put to death. Lansky accomplished this with poignancy, intelligent writing, and humor. All of the idiosyncrasies and concerns of his characters, real people with names and places, made for fascinating reading. So much of Yiddish writing and literatures concerns itself with Yiddishkeit, what it means to be Jewish, and how it plays a role in the day to day lives of all Jews. The writings teach us about humanity, performance of mitzvahs, regard for one's fellow man, respect for education, and continuity of family and tradition. Lansky has helped many of us who fail to understand why we cling to our roots in this modern world; we go to shul maybe once or twice a year, have an occasional Passover dinner, or attend a children's Purim festival. His book has served as a wake up call. There is more to Yiddishkeit than marginal participation. He has opened my eyes to the extensive world of Yiddish literature. Even though my memory of the language is vague and I can only read a little in Yiddish, the fact that these books are now available in English translation is a phenomenal achievement. Up until now, I have read only books by Isaac Bashevis Singer and Malamud; available is a myriad of genius writers that I can access. When the feast ended, I realized the feat of his travail. His book is a testimony to the efforts of one, and many others as well, to preserve our Jewish history and language. Lansky made me laugh and cry from page to page as he educated me in the re-appreciation of Yiddishkeit.

This book really took me back and got me thinking again about my family's heritage. There was so much that my grandparents and great-aunts/uncles DIDN'T talk about - and this book gave me a bit of insight into what their experience might have been like. I attended a Workmen's Circle school as a child, and learned a great deal about my Jewish and Yiddish heritage. We were culturally Jewish (as opposed to religiously). This book helped to fill in some blanks. In addition, the stories of Mr. Lansky's collecting experiences were wonderful and I was sorry when the book ended. I loved meeting people who reminded me of my relatives, now long gone.

While an undergraduate at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, Aaron Lansky took a course about the Holocaust and became interested in the sociological study of Jews. He found a professor at UMass who taught him Yiddish and this resulted in his first hand experience of how difficult it is to find Yiddish books to read. Thus began a career of scooping up Yiddish books from all over the world and storing them at the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst. "Outwitting History" is Lansky's memoir of starting that now-flourishing institution. It is told straight-forwardly with lots of amusing anecdotes. Lansky's descriptions of the elderly Jews he meets in book collecting brings alive Yiddish life and culture which is disappearing in today's world. His enthusiasm for the subject is contagious, and this makes "Outwitting History" a wonderful book to read.

I bought both the lonely planet Reykjavik pocket guide and full Iceland book.Overall I'd say the Reykjavik pocket guide was a better buy. It had enough info about Reykjavik, the Golden Circle, Reykjanes peninsula, South Coast, and other surrounding areas that it was all we really needed for our 6 day trip to the city (well.. this guide along with tripadvisor and google maps, of course!). While the "Iceland" guide was larger and had more interesting cultural anecdotes, it was also heavier to carry and had a lot of useless info listing accommodation ad restaurants that might be outdated (and you can always use Tripadvisor for these things... who picks a hotel out of a guide book anyway?!). Go with this one.Note: I'm subtracting one star because I wish it had more maps (the Iceland guide didn't have enough maps either). Driving around Iceland was not as easy as we had hoped and we were lost a few times - luckily all the cars are hybrids and one tank of gas got us 790km (almost 500 miles). If this guide had more detailed locations of its attractions that would have been nice.

This was the best guide to take with to Iceland. It was small and easy to use. Reykjavik is not a large town and there are maps in every hotel the city has. Plus the locals all speak English - so you are never without assistance. Honestly, this was the best guide for taking with as it was light and compact and had all the information that I needed during my trip. The exhaustive list of accommodations in other books are completely useless once you are there. And a hint for Iceland - those accommodations should be booked ahead of time.

I will never travel without a Lonely Planet Pocket book. The size is great for carrying in your purse to consult for quick food & activity suggestions. So many of the food recommendations were excellent and affordable! I used the accommodations recommendations to book hostels & hotels before we traveled. I particularly LOVE the "Best of" selections. The attached maps also were so helpful. This book really made travel so easy and enjoyable.

This little book was a great help giving us the top things to do around Reykjavik, Snæfellsnes and Reykjanes Peninsulas - and everything in between! There are maps of each peninsula that we drove around and showed what not to miss. - not just descriptions. I really like the small size because it fit right into my purse! It gets right to the point of explaining key information about attractions and doesn't go into tons of tiny details and isn't wordy like the larger guides.

The Lonely Planet Pocket Reykjavik was a valuable source of information for us on our trip. I supplemented the information in the book with reviews on Trip Advisor and carried this book throughout Reykjavik. Following its advice we visited interesting sites, ate at good restaurants, and took advantage of the useful advice. I carried the book throughout the trip.

This little book is chocked full of information and it's laid out in a way that's very easy to read and follow. Very colorful as well. We haven't been on our trip yet so I can't speak it its accuracy but so far we love it. if your sticking to Reykjavik then this little guy is a handy tool!

Very brief and selective information, some of it of little interest to general traveler. Better info from the city website.

Even though you can find everything online now, this guide was exceptional. And easy to bring along anywhere I went in Iceland.

Review

“[A] stark, gripping graphic novel memoir.” ―Washington Post, “These books can help build strong girls―and boys―for today's world”“Tillie Walden's Spinning is an engrossing, gorgeously quiet look back at the 12 years she devoted to figure and synchronized skating.” ―New York Times“Intimate and compelling. A quiet powerhouse of a memoir.” ―Kirkus Reviews, starred review“An elegant, contemplative, and somber graphic memoir . . . A haunting and resonant coming-of-age story.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review“Quiet and lyrical . . . and deeply satisfying. A stirring, gorgeously illustrated story of finding the strength to follow one’s own path.” ―Booklist, starred review“An honest and intimate coming-of-age story that will be appreciated by tweens and young teens, especially those in competitive sports.” ―School Library Journal“An accessible introduction to the graphic novel form. Older readers will want to graduate from this to Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home.” ―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books“This beautiful story about sorrow, growth, and triumph will resonate in every reader’s heart.” ―Laurie Halse Anderson, New York Times–bestselling author and two-time National Book Award finalist“This is a beautifully told story that will resonate with anyone who played an instrument, or did gymnastics, or got signed up for skating: these things weren't always what we wanted to do or cared about, but they gave us some focus when everything else was mystery and chaos.” ―Lucy Knisley, New York Times bestselling author of Relish: My Life in the Kitchen“Spinning is spare yet intimate, painfully honest, and oh-so-real.” ―Malinda Lo, three-time Lambda Literary Award finalist author of Ash and Adaptation“Gorgeous and honest.” ―Faith Erin Hicks, award-winning author of The Nameless City

Beautifully drawn, it meanders a bit but it does give you an idea of what it's like to be a young figure skater. Also it's unwittingly an illustration of the difference between Texas and New Jersey's attitudes toward culture and child achievement. The end is unsatisfying, The author is in her very early twenties and that lack of perspective shows. I've quit a number of sports, musical instruments, and hobbies throughout my childhood and teenage years and while at the time being mediocre and miserable at your hobby seems like a tremendous waste of time it never actually is a waste. I remember wishing I'd quit sooner but as an adult I grew to appreciate being able to do things effortlessly and a great deal better than someone who started learning as an adult . And I'm sure with time the author will appreciate the time spent figure skating, she will probably enjoy her skills more when they're no longer an obligatory chore. Also if you enjoyed this book I recommend her webcomic "On a Sunbeam."

Not appropriate for young skaters. I bought for my 9 year old daughter who figure skates and it had f-bombs and inappropriate content. Thankful I gave to coach to read first

Spinning features some lovely artwork, and thoughtful introspection on the author’s late childhood and adolesence. Although it is a story with queer themes, it isn’t really a traditional ‘coming out’ narrative, or romantic drama. It feels like real life with all real life’s banalities. So the narrative benefits from some authenticity, but also lacks drive, and coherence. I enjoyed the fondly remembered coach Barbara, the insights on figure skating’s cut throat atmosphere, and the ‘otherness’ of being a queer young person. The character art is nicely expressive. I wished there had been a bit more variety in the paneling. It felt a bit rigid, with a lot of 2x3 cube pages. I like how the coloring plays with negative spaces. Overall this feels like a solid early effort by a talented author. I look forward to seeing more!

This is the first graphic novel I've ever read, and I enjoyed it. It's really more of a young adult coming of age story, than a story about skating.

Great coming of age graphic novel. Felt real.

Fast delivery and a wonderfully illustrated memoir/comic.

Beautifully drawn, choice of colors is touching and overall I was very much drawn into it <3

a quick but impactful read that will leave you smiling :)

First let me say that this review contains spoilers. This is a pity. The only reason I placed these spoilers in this review is that the product description here already lets the cat out of the bag as to the ending. This is a pity.Anyway....I first read this story years and years ago. It was one of the many short stories we had to read in a special advanced English course I took in high school. Like most kids of that age I felt I was being force fed a bunch of stuff I had absolutely no interest in and must admit that I fought it. Over the years I have forgotten most to many of the numerous stories we read during that year, which is sort of sad when you think about it, but I have to tell you that this offering from Ambrose Bierce was not one of those that I consciously or unconsciously shuffled either to the back of my mind or out of it completely. No, no - far, far from it! This one has stuck with me throughout the years and I was delighted when I found it as a free Kindle download.A Confederate man; a planter in northern Alabama during the Civil War has been captured by Union Solders. He has been sentenced to death and the story begins on a railroad bridge as the man stands on a railroad bridge with a rope noose about his neck about to be hanged. The board he is standing upon is tilted and he begins to fall. This entire short story takes place in the doomed mans mind as he falls to the end of the rope. The reader at this point does not realize this and we watch in sickening slow motion as the rope breaks, the planter hits the water, is shot at, makes a daring escape, struggles through the woods and finally finds himself going up the steps of his home to the loving arms of his wife...snap..white searing light! As the story progresses in becomes more and more surreal and the reader starts getting hints that not all is as it seems. When you consider when this work was written and published; around 1891, this is a rather remarkable ploy. You know something strange is going to happen but it is not until the final line; the final word that your suspicions are confirmed. Now I have never been hung. I probably should have been on a few occasions, but so far I have been fortunate. I am not at all sure that that much would go through a persons mind during the last three for four seconds of his or her life but that is rather moot. Whether this would actually happen is beside the point. The great thing about this story is that the author had the ability to make it quite real. This story deserves to be read closely. In truly great short stories what is not written is quite often just as important as what is written. All great short story writers have this ability and Bierce most certainly had it going when he wrote this one.In many ways this is a haunting story; anyway it was to me. While it most certainly cannot be classified as a horror story I can most emphatically tell you that it horrified me when I first read it. It had the same effect as several of the stories Poe wrote; the impact on my mind was just as great. The quality of the Kindle download is quite good on this one. It will take you 15 or 10 minutes to read and it is free. It is most certainly worth your time.Don BlankenshipThe Ozarks

I had no idea what I was about to read. As I read, I experienced “standard” pro-segregation B.S.!An ending I won’t comment on. Certainly interesting ?

I loved this movie the first time I saw it. I watched it with my children, but a few short years later, my youngest son and a grandson died in a car wreck. Now, I have other grandchildren, but I still long to see those who aren't with us.Losing a child or a grandchild will always be with you. Yes, I picked up the pieces, but the counselor I went to told me you never get over it. You just learn to live with it..

Odd, like an Edgar Allen Poe tale. Only this one is not recommended. I see I have seven more words required, there you have it.

Interesting read!

When I was in the sixth grade, I had a teacher who used to show this short film. It was on one of those old reel-to-reel projectors, so I'm telling my age here. In the film, which is set in civil war Alabama (it must have been an Alabama history class), a civilian is about to be hanged from a railroad bridge by soldiers of the Union army. When the plank drops however, he finds himself plunging into the water. He manages to untie himself and swim downstream while dodging bullets. He succeeds in escaping and makes his way thirty miles back home where his wife comes running out the door with open arms to greet him. But there's a twist to the ending so I won't spoil it for you. Thirty years after watching this film, I read the short story, called "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" by Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce. I still can't figure out why I had to watch this film so many times in school. It's supposedly a great work of literature, but it now seems like a piece of southern-culture indoctrination-propaganda as I look back on it and question it. But the story is eerie and morbid and not unlike some of my worst nightmares, so that's why I had to read it.Written by David Allan ReevesAuthor of "Running Away From Me"

good

This is not a book, it is a booklet. I was expecting a full size paperback. I overlooked the fact that it is only 30 pages. Too expensive for what you get so I returned it.

This is the second book I read by Paulo Coelho and it was even better than the first. Suicide - such a tough subject. Some feel that the person taking their life are selfish, some understand, some wish they knew that the person was that down so they could of been their to help and some just don't understand. All in all it is a sad and tough thing to go through when a family member or close friend decide to take their own life. But when you survive suicide how does the one taking their life feel? Waking up and realizing you are alive. And if this was to happen but you were told your attempt still worked because the damage to your body is so severe you have a week to live? How does one feel then facing death knowing its inevitable? Death is inevitable but when it is to approach us we do not know. We all subconsciously think about our death - but on a daily level? The seriously ill think about death. But to actually wait for your death to come? What feelings and thoughts race through your mind. So how would you feel knowing you were going to die? Would you start to live again? It is a deep question one at the moment I am thankfully do not need to ponder (but at times will admit I do). This story was beautifully written and has awaken inside of me the joy of living. Living as life should be enjoyed in the moment not past or present and always believe in yourself.

Review: Veronika Decides To Die by Paulo Coelho. 4 Stars 11/04/2018It could have been a depressing read but Paulo Coelho made the story entertaining. The book weights highly on Paulo Coelho own personal experience when he was institutionalized. Coelho’s description of the motivation behind the story is when he was younger in Brazil around 1960’s the emphases to artist was synonymous with homosexual, communist, drug addict, and low-life is similar to the same as USA’s views of the artist who drank and smoked with simplistic behavior, sometimes occasionally functional, at times completely unstable with society and the subtlety of influences that they had to face. The story is about a young Slovenian woman, Veronika, who attempts suicide a few times, fails, and is institutionalized. While in the confines of the facility Veronika is told that by overdosing on pills she had damaged her heart and only has five days to live. She now has to come to grips with what it means to be dying.Coelho writes about the effects of Veronika’s death sentence diagnosis and how she interacts with other patients. The first patient she interacts with is Zedka who is a depressive person who offers Veronika advice and insight. Than there is Maria, who withdrew from her family, friends and society because she was having severe panic attacks. Plus there is Eduardo, a schizophrenic, who befriends Veronika who is unsure if she wants a friend. Veronika still wants to die but decides she doesn’t want to hide out at the facility like the others who are free to defy rules without judgment and the feeling of being safe and secure…She is still confused about what it means to die…!

Read this book as my 3rd Coehlo book, and saw life in the light of death, depicted in a way where there was more than just sadness and regret for the lack of feeling, but for the life that was still available to access. This book will take you to more places of discovery than of blankness or despair. The title may be misleading in what you might assume it is about, but you won't regret where it takes you.

For anyone that has contemplated suicide, or has attempted it, or been in a mental hospital, this book is NOT just for you. Mental health is always talked about as an important issue on this planet lately. But this book, it makes you look at the real underlying truth to these "mental health issues" in this world. And the one main point that you should take from this book is that there are more people on this planet that have been through and dealt with some traumatic or darkness in their lifetime, then there are those that have not - and for whatever reason there is that time is spent in a hospital, you are the norm of society, and you always have been, you just had the opportunity to handle your issues with a professional vs. others that live in silence and repeat their daily lives never to see the world as it is and never moving past their past and present and living and breathing in this world.

My favorite lines:. I came into this world in order to go through: attempted suicide, ruining my heart, meeting you, coming up to this castle, letting you engrave my face on your soul. That is the only reason I came into the world, to make you go back to the path you strayed from... "This book is very profound. I really enjoyed it. Wasn't overly serious. Had some laughing points. However, I thought I'd scream at the scene with Edward. OMG!!I enjoyed this book! So much to think about. What I wouldn't give to be a part a discussion on this one.

In addition to providing a window to the world of the people labeled as mentally disturbed, this book also provides a window to the ways in which parents might cripple children's hopes for life, or how adult mentors in general can support the hopes and creativity of the young, or destroy them. Like other Coelho's stories, the narrative is deceivingly simple and the message has great depth. I felt like I could see glimpses of the characters' souls. And just like in other Coelho's books, I find pieces of myself in each of them, but also pieces of how I might have been sometime in the past. The book reminds me that we are never finished examining our assumptions, pre-conceptions and decisions.
