I think this book has a lot of great information about sausage making. I really like that they emphasize food safety and keeping ingredients at a certain temperature to prevent bacteria growth, etc.However, what is this Italian Sausage recipe that doesn't contain fennel?? The description of the recipe even mentions fennel however NO fennel is listed in the ingredient list. It does however list coriander as an ingredient. Did they screw up and mix up fennel and coriander? I made the sausage as indicated by the recipe. Cooked a bit of it to taste. It wasn't good. I hope the rest of the recipes are better than this one!Update: In looking at a recipe for Lake Trout and Chive sausages (since I have an abundance of lake trout in the freezer after a fishing trip on Lake Michigan), I noticed the recipe instructs you to cook a small amount of rice in fish stock and let cool. The rest of the recipe never mentions what to do with this rice! Do you grind it in with the fish? Do you mix it in after you've ground the fish?It's because of these inaccuracies I've changed my review to 2 stars. Did you guys proof read this book? Maybe a mix up in this new revision? Not good.

Recently decided to try my hand at making sausage and after looking through several books on the subject purchased this one and I'm glad I did. The early sections are basic which is what I wanted and filled with some great tips that were superior to those that came come with the meat grinder. It's helpful to get tips born from experience and from someone that has a clear enjoyment of what they do. I haven't read the book from cover to cover but thumbing through it I'm looking forward to trying some of the recipes in the book. I'd definitely recommend this to any sausage maker.

This book is first in a set of three. It is a wonderful trilogy set during the time of Jesus Christ, featuring a fictional family and their friends who encounter a new preacher... Who is he? Is he the Messiah? Some family members accept Him immediately and follow Him. Others question and take time. .Belief has consequences The book is an excellent view into the times of Christ. There's chapter notes at the end of each chapter with documentation, explanations of the customs and history. I learned about Pharisees,Sadduces, Zealots, Romans, but best of all this book brought to life the Bible stories I've heard all my life. My understanding has grown - of questions like: How could the crowds love him one day and call for his crucifixion the next? Why were some leaders of the Jews so virulent against this Man who taught his followers to turn the other cheek? The story is gripping, well woven and inspiring. I'm reading it now for the second time and loving it!

I really enjoyed Fishers of Men. Gerald N. Lund has a great balance of keeping you engaged and excited while also teaching you the history of the setting in all of is books. Fishers of Men is no different. I am definitely going to continue and read the whole series. I love the personal conflict each character goes through when the stranger who is called Jesus comes. Each of them have something that they must give up in order to follow Christ. By the first chapter you will be hooked by the suspense, but the full adventure doesn’t come full underway until you’re close toward the end and that can take some time getting too. The book itself is over 600 pages so it’s not a fast read. If you want a book that has adventure and excitement with a touch of romance while also enhancing your understanding of Christ in a personal way, this is the book for you! I would recommend it to anyone.

the kingdom and the crown is a fictional story about a family during the time of the ministry of Christ. Although it doesn't really give Christ a three dimensional character (in my opinion, since the author tried to keep his character in line with the bible) the rest of the characters are well written and the location, time frame, and customs have been heavily researched. Gerald Lund really did his homework so you do feel like your actually there.

This book puts you right in the middle of 30 AD. I do not care for "voluminous" books-but I cannot put this one down. It is suspenseful, and I can easily put myself in the middle of the times and places that have occurred anciently...looking forward to reading the other two volumes!

This was an engaging book which gave insight into what the Jewish people were experiencing at the time of Jesus' ministry and how difficult it might have been to accept Jesus as the messiah because of their misconceptions of how he would come and what he was there to accomplish. It helped with understanding of the times, the different factions in both the Jewish community and the Roman occupation. With events in story form with fictitional families and their stories, I gained insight into Jesus ministry and teachings as well.

This is an excellent novel based on the Four Gospels. Ironically, portraying fictional characters in the time of Christ makes the Bible stories more real. This is the first volume in the Kingdom & Crown series, and one should read them in order to appreciate the series fully.

Gerald Lund is the best writer I've ever read....I now have all his books and am impressed as an elderly man at his talents!! thank you!

Wayne S. Freeze, Windows Game Programming with Visual Basic and DirectX (Que, 2002)First and foremost, a warning. Freeze's book, despite its publication date, deals exclusively in Visual Basic 6. If you're using VB.NET, a lot of this stuff is going to cause you to wonder what on earth Freeze is on about. I strongly suggest reading Keith Sink's DirectX 8 and Visual Basic Development in conjunction with this, and asking a lot of questions on a lot of VB.NET tech support mailing lists. (Microsoft's documentation on how to go from VB6-VB.NET with DirectX is not nonexistent, but it is such that nonexistent would have been better.) Given that .NET had already been in prerelease for over a year by this book's publication, one would think that, at the very least, the publisher would have made it very plain somewhere on the cover that the book dealt in a technology that's not compatible with the next generation of the language. An unforgivable oversight, especially if you happen to spend the full retail price for a copy of this book.That aside, Freeze's book is quite good in the way it introduces the reader to the new, and largely esoteric, combination of Visual Basic and DirectX (the latter technology was exclusively the realm of C++ programmers until 2001, when DX8 began to include VB wrappers). He's not afraid to use repetition to get his point across, and he does so in a laid-back atmosphere that's quite different from what one sees in most how-to programming manuals.Freeze teaches the VB/DX intersection through the programming of a SimCity-style games called SwimMall, which is in and of itself at least worth a discounted copy of the book. Needless to say it's not a commercial-quality game, as one would expect from a single person programming such a thing while under the pressure of a book deadline. But the routines and ideas therein are just the thing to spark the imaginations of novice game programmers; no matter what genre a person is working in, there are certainly routines here that will help a programmer out in various ways. Much of this code is easily ported to any other type of game framework.Very good stuff. Just remember the admonition in the first paragraph if you're working with .NET and haven't used VB before. (Actually, I recommend Sink in conjunction with this book anyway; the atmospheres of the two are a pleasant mesh, and when you can't find a niggling piece of information you need in one, the other is sure to have it.) *** ½

I have mixed feelings about this book. I am an intermediate level game programmer but I have relatively little experience with Direct3D. I think it is great to finally see a book that deals with the use of Direct3D for VB. My largest complaint about this book is that it makes extensive use of a $600 3D graphics tool called TrueSpace. It comes with a "Trial" version so I figured I would be able to use it for 30 days or something to see if it was worth buying, but the trial version doesn't even let you save files. Without the ability to save the files to load into my game applications, I can not properly evaluate the software. So the author needs to be more clear that the purchase of some very expensive software is required to fully utilize the book. The book is also a little limited in scope in that it focuses on the development of only one game (an underwater 3D sim mall). I also found the capabilities of the code presented rather week. I have achieved much higher frame rates using my own graphics engine with VB and WIN API calls. I understand that non-optimized code is often used for clarity, but it is simply too inefficient for real game programming. With all that said, I still learned a lot in reading this book, and I would recommend buying it if you are an intermediate level VB game programmer. Just don't expect to write the next Quake any time soon.

Usually I wait for others to review a book before making my purchase. Well, this time I didn't and wish that I did. I expected a lot more from this book than what was offered. Since there are few VB game programming books available I try to check each one out. I choose this book purely on the authors name. Instead of exploring different aspects of game programming with VB and Direct X, the entire book is about one game, a sim game based on Sim City. If I would have known this from the start I wouldn't have bought it. So if you are looking to learn how to incorporate Direct X into your VB games look elsewhere. If you want to learn how to program a Sim game then check this book out.

As the Technical Editor of this book you think I would have an unjust view of the quality, but I am just another VB game programmer who fell into the job. This book not only covers the basics of directX but it takes you through the making of a fully playable 3D simulation game. I have done some reviews and read some reviews of other VB game programming books and one thing that was always mentioned was that there was never enough info on DirectX, Well here it is. You will also learn the basics of trueSpace 5 for the making of the graphics, Work with MS Speech API to make your characters talk, And Learn to play MP3s as background music for you games. I have to say I have been waiting for this book to be written for a long long time. Pick it up and learn to make some great games, From Beginner to advanced this book holds a lot for everyone to learn.

The Top 10 books are my absolute favorite travel guides for a few reasons, they are not overwhelming with telling you every little thing to do. They give their recommendations of the top 10, with prices, hours, and helpful information. The maps in the book are easy to read and they have a list of helpful telephone numbers. The book is normally pretty small and light so it is easy to take with you. I have 5 others! I love them and it has photos!

As someone who has traveled to Vienna before, and a reader of many other Eyewitness Top Ten city books, I have to say this Vienna version is the most informative and throughly written. It's a great guide and well worth the price!

Mostly pretty pictures without a lot of substance. It might be okay if you want a quick introduction before visiting the city but it would not be much use as an actual travel guide when you're there.

So useful, so helpful,l and fits in your pocket - and you can take the maps out, if that's all you want to carry.

a nice inexpensive ebook overview but it is nothing like the full version of the guide that i purchased afterward. i was also able to e-book (pdf of a website) for free something similar.

The great thing about DK is the photography. No photography in the Kindle version. Shame. These script ions could use some more detail too.

Kate Fagan is an excellent writer who interrupts an outstanding read with boring, benign and utterly useless personal anecdotes about her own athletic "career", which is intended to draw a parallel (I believe) between her and the subject and instead comes off as the writer screaming "GOOGLE ME!(!), I was a college athlete!". Speaking of Google. Google the original ESPN the Magazine article. Every salient detail you need to know and feel this story is there.

Absolutely heartbreaking story, but the reason why I am going into the field I am. I was drawn to Maddy's story when it first happened because I related to it so much & it broke my heart that she wasn't able to find her way out too. I think it's so important for stories like these to be out there because people often think "it can't happen to me" because they're good parents, have money, live in good areas, kids seem successful, etc., but the reality is that mental illness doesn't discriminate. Maddy's parents seemed to do everything they could & yet it still happened to them. Maddy was CERTAINLY successful, but it still happened to her. My heart broke for her dad when he took her back to school & stayed behind just to make sure she seemed ok, planned to bring her back for regular therapy appointments (Maddy had told them she was struggling with suicidal thoughts), & yet even with him doing everything he thought he could, he still got that heartbreaking phone call. The story was well written, showing several sides to it, & for her parents to be willing to share their heartache in such detail will definitely have an impact.There was much more of Kate's input in the story than I thought there would be...I went into it thinking she was just the investigative reporter, but she shared a lot of her own story in there which I didn't relate to at all. I found myself skipping past her sections just to get to the rest of Maddy's story. Maybe some people would be more interested in Kate's story, but it just wasn't for me. I'd still highly recommend the book though - it really sheds light on a very important issue in a very personal, relatable way.

I wish I could say that this book was amazing but it was just ok. Despite it being a very interesting topic to me, I found myself starting to skim through it. I think the way it was written, it would have made a great magazine article but as a whole book it just didn't quite keep my interest. A few chapters in and I was ready to move on. I did really like the book cover and the title and applaud the author for covering a great topic.

I am a sixty year old woman with four children and three grandchildren. I’m not sure what made me buy this book. I’m not usually a non-fiction reader. I think the topic of suicide leaves everyone feeling so empty and the thought of this type of loss is unimaginable.By our society’s standards, Mandy had it all; a loving family, a huge group of friends to offer support, a God given talent to run, and yet, it wasn’t enough. Her poor family. They did everything “right.” That’s what is so scary.I believe that anyone that reads this will find Maddys story so compelling and truly something they can relate to. Some of her feelings brought back similar feelings I had when I attended my dream college and left after one year. Suicide never crossed my mind but I can tell you I was troubled and my self esteem was low. I finished school in four years ( my absolute promise to myself)but personally I made some bad choices during this time.How do we talk to our kids and grand children so they will never make the same choice Maddy did? After reading the book, I’m not certain I know the answer to that. I do know that I will talk to them just like maddys parents did and hope and pray that they will never feel so desperate.I would definitely recommend this book

This book did a really great job of telling Maddy's story as thoroughly as possible while also taking a broader look at college suicide as well. The author delves into Maddy's journey from high school to college and paints a revealing picture of a young woman trying to downplay her downward spiral into anxiety and depression; it explains how so many signs were missed without attempting to lay blame or provide reasons. The author did a great job of putting together the pieces of Maddy's life that were kept separate before by circumstance and by Maddy herself. At the same time, the author takes step back and looks at this suicide in the context of the college experience and illustrates how the increasing focus on performance creates a pressure cooker environment for many young people thrust into the college/sports arena.

No book is perfect. When you take the subject fo suicide even less so. The author does a fantastic job of taking the life of a young woman and trying to explain why she lost the battle to depression. She used her experiences as a mentally healthy individual in comparison to try and show not everyone processes and handles situations the same way. In the end the book does not answer the question of why. The truth is the only one who could ever know why was maddy.As someone who has made attempts in the past I can honestly say this book really hits on a lot of truths. The truths are grey but they are truths.I cried so much and this book took me a long time to finish. The farther I got the longer it took. That is a good thing. Suicide is a harsh subject. There is no easy way to discuss it, at least their shouldn't be. You dont have to be an athlete or have gone to college to have experienced feelings similar to maddy's.That said while I doubt the family reads any book reviews and try to avoid reminders I just want to say my heart goes out and thank you for sharing.
