About the Author

P. G. Bell is a native of south Wales, where he was raised on a diet of Greek mythology, ghost stories, and Doctor Who. He’s had all sorts of jobs over the years, from lifeguard to roller coaster operator, but has always wanted to write stories for a living. This was a really delightful tale full of twists and turns, memorable characters, trolls, magic, good and evil. It was whimsical and I believe children (and adults) will love it. Adventure and danger abound but not too scary, so children can enjoy without nightmares. Richly creative and well written. Kudo’s to this debut author.

I have been looking for a chapter book about a train adventure in this reading level for what seems to be years. I was so psyched when I stumbled upon this book. My 8 year old train enthused nephew was thrilled to start reading this. And to know its the first of a new trilogy is really exciting! Can’t wait to read more! Thank you.

I’m a bit biased, my brother did the artwork

This book is a great children's book as well as a good book for all ages. While making sure to stay at a low reading comprehension level, P.G. Bell tells a fun and interesting story. While not revolutionary, the author does a good job of putting some new spins on a story of the fantastic intruding on the mundane. There are times in the book where you will predict the outcome or intentions/motivations of a character, and be right, only to find out after that, those simple ideas have a fair bit more deep motivation. The world here can seem very much like a classic cliche of a fantasy world discovery. However, as the plot moves along, much like the train of the story, things seem to have more angles and twists to them than you first think. Overall, "The Train to Impossible Places" is a story you'll find is much deeper than it first appears. The protagonist is likable and the story is very engaging. My only real issue is that there are a couple of characters who aren't quite given enough time for you to go beyond the 2 dimensional, albeit fun, ideas. This book will be enjoyable for anyone, but children will probably enjoy it more than adults and teenagers.

I will start by saying I have Bipolar Disorder, and have struggled with it for many years. I've had some time off recently, so I wanted to really investigate the science behind my disorder. I started with two books on mental health policy over the past 50 years ( "American Psychosis" for a negative take, and "Better but Not Well" for a more positive, mainstream take), then I read the latest psychiatric information about the disorder- the suspected genetic causes , the brain chemistry approach, the neurological evidence from the official peer-reviewed literature. I altogether found it unsatisfying. Everywhere I turned, it was always "While the specific mechanism is unknown, it is believed..." or "While specific genes cannot be found, it does seem to run in families..." Even the neurological explanation didn't seem able to distinguish cause from effect, or come up with any predictive mechanism. I began to really question the mainstream, so I read "Anatomy of an Epidemic", which was an excellent summary of all the research showing that the brain-chemistry model is ineffective. I even investigated my own medication, and found that Lamictal, the primary drug of choice for bipolar treatment, was found to be ineffective in 7 out of 9 clinical trials ( Of course GSK only published the positive two).All Thomas Szasz really says here is that we can't view mental illness, that is to say, the major mood disorders and psychoses, as normal diseases. We can't pretend that mental illness is some exogenous force that is totally irrelevant of the victim's life experiences, the victims traumas and tragedies, and the victim's behaviors. In fact, new research into the pscychosocial explanation finds very strong evidence for the importance of these things in predicting the incidence of mental illness. And if its true, as Szasz argues, that there is this very strong psychosocial element, then therapy to understand these issues and perceptions and to allow the patient to change behavior is the best option for treatment. Again, research shows the efficacy of Psychotherapy in general as well as CBT specifically.Finally, I can say he is 100% correct in his assertion that much of psychiatry is inhumane. Involuntary treatment, and even the attitude that certain ways of life are "right" and other ways "bad," are means of controlling people. They are a way for society to get rid of undesirables and call it compassion, and on the other side, an escape valve for the oppressed. A key piece of evidence for this is that "homosexuality" was a mental illness for a long time, something we would scoff at now; that was a means of social control, not a means of helping the patient. Healing can only occur in an atmosphere of respect and dignity, where the doctor respects the patient's rights and autonomy, and where the patient takes responsibility.The book is quite plodding at points, but if you skip his abstract explanations and jump straight to the examples he gives, it is very clear. While I'm not convinced that all mental illness is purely a construction, I think Szasz hits the nail on the head for the general direction Psychiatry has moved.

As a retired health care professional, I wish that I had read this book a long, long time ago. It should be standard reading in all health care professional training, and especially in any field related to mental health. Unfortunately, the mainstream powers that be will not allow that. I recommend that you buy this book in paper and give it to any health care professional you deal with. The life and mental health you save may be your own.

Dr. Szasz presages a number of authors who wrestle with the various issues facing postmodern American society, especially those concerning how the dilution of meaning--that is, what constitutes truth in an objective sense--has impacted society in general. He also discusses how the misuse of broad definitions viz. mental illness have had the unintended consequence of misrepresenting and confusing bona fide clinical illnesses from those that are actually matters of moral and ethical judgment and choice. From Dr. Szasz's perspective, the postmodern attitude that "anything goes" is a chimera, an illusion. Postmodernism as a mindset has served to fragment society into factions with the conflict between individualism and collectivism taking front stage. I would recommend reading this book along with Kurt Andersen's book Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire (2017) to grasp the social identity crisis that is afflicting America in the present era, and that have been part of the American psyche since the Pilgrims...

A renaissance man for sure. I learned a great deal from this book and other books by him. He also inspired me to write my own book " The Loss of Grace in an Asylum," which is an authentic account of the oppressive criminal nature of psychiatry at Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital in New Jersey.

Szasz once said that he is the only doctor in his field who hands were clean, because he never medicated any of his patients. Very illuminating read, this is one of those books that will change your way of looking at the largely pseudo-scientific field of psychiatry. A worldview changer of a read!

About the Author

Astrid Lindgren (1907–2002) was born in Sweden. After college, she worked in a newspaper office and a Swedish publishing house. Wonderful cultural story.Illustrations are very well done and provide more depth to the legend.

Astrid Lindgren, creator of irrepressible Pippi Longstocking, here shares the Scandinavian legend about a kindly winter dwarf who secretly inhabits and protects isolated farms. This independent little fellow wears shaggy clothes, a long white beard (hundreds of years’ growth) and a long red stocking cap. Now you must understand that no human being has ever seen the Tomten, but in winter sharp eyes might detect his tiny footprints in the snow. Only children could see him, but then—alas--they are always asleep when he peeps in, so they can’t be counted as believers. There is no real plot in this first story, which serves as a gentle introduction to beloved Nordic lore, lovingly adapted from a poem by Viktor Rydberg. Like a secret benefactor the Tomten paces his lonely rounds to the farm’s various buildings--soothing the animals by giving them pleasant dreams of future spring and summer, some straw or a midnight snack. A few repetitive phrases will sound rhythmically on the listener’s ear. Despite the lack of action and conflict, the gently-told tale will touch those who are young at heart and the delightful pastel illustrations by Harald Wiberg will charm children and adults alike. Every quaint old farm needs a loyal Tomten to ensure smooth, nocturnal operations.

I might be the only person who actually dislikes the story. As a child, I loved The Tomten, and I've been reading my old copy to my own kids. I was delighted to see that there was a second book, but it just misses the mark for me.The voice swings between narrator, animal characters, and someone else - the tomten himself? The fox? It's hard to tell who is scolding the fox to tread quietyly. There's no real rhythm to the words, unlike the original prose. I'm sure this is an #unpopularopinion, but I just can't enjoy this book.

Great Scandinavian folkloric story of winter in the North. Poetic, atmospheric tale of a winter night, where the kind and nurturing little Tomten gently but firmly protects the chickens from a marauding fox by giving him oatmeal! Interesting roots to this story - the Scandinavian belief in little people who guard the farm. Actually there are worldwide stories of little people; in the Yucatan they are also said to be farm guardians (Duendes, or Alux} and reports of them in North America as well. How can we be so sure they are just myths? The farm guardian stories suggest that they were the original "owners" of the land, just continuing to steward it for the food gifts left them by the farmers. And there are even tiny arrowheads and skeletons found.

This book is lovely. The illustrations are gorgeous, and the story introduces children to Scandinavian folklore. What's especially nice is that the story gives two perspectives... one from the Tomten who protects a family farm, and one from a hungry fox looking to get a meal from the henhouse. The guilty look on the fox's face is priceless when the Tomten catches him sticking his nose in the henhouse! Since we live on a farm and deal with chickens and foxes regularly, this is especially perfect for our family. My children love reading both this book and THE TOMTEN and never seem to tire of them. I love the bit of old magic that they add to our lives.

This book should be read after the introductory tale, THE TOMTEN, which introduced this modest Scandinavian gnome. Based on Nordic legend this little fellow guards a farm; children and adults have heard about him, but never seen him--only his tiny footprints in the snow are proof he is on duty. His self-appointed mission is to guard the farm by night and help restless farm animals drift off to sleep.But tonight a hungry fox comes exploring. How can the little fellow with the long white beard and red stocking cap protect the animals--yet show kindness to a hungry creature? I have long loved this gentle tale, with its compassionate message and captivating illustrations. I feel that Tomten Lore should be a part of all children's heritage--even if they don't have Scandinavian ancestry. A third book is the longer THE CHRISTMAS TOMTEN. Sprinkled with falling stars!

Lovely, strange little story. Like the Tomten itself, the words feel still and old and ageless.We have it on paper and there's detail in the drawing that you miss on the Kindle: the actual footprints in the snow, but also the somewhat scary eyes on the dark, in the hayloft, among other things. It's just not the best format for it. However it lets me read the book aloud to my daughter while walking through our darkened house before bed, so I'm glad it exists.

Love this story, perfect for bedtime. Totally satisfied with the quality for the price. Almost didn't buy it because other reviews complained about image quality. The images are not as perfect as the original hardcover printings, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy this book for one minute based on that.

This book is a lovely short story to read to your children or grandchildren - intact I enjoyed reading it myself! This is a Nordic take about a very old gnome (the Tonten) who is very old and checks on the farmer's animals and then family every night. I would recommend this book to all who enjoy folklore!

The CAGED-based fretboard system used has world-wide recognition and a long historic basis, refined and tweaked in Musicians Institute curricula since 1977 by hundreds of instructors after its introduction by Howard Roberts in the early 1970s. You'll cover everything you need for a rock-solid foundation, including modes and slash chords. You'll understand and play (anywhere on the neck!) any scale or chord you encounter or imagine. Besides offering you a chance to completely grasp the guitar, this method assures you will be able to communicate with other trained musicians no matter what their instrument. The book was designed for use in three arenas: private lessons, classroom instruction, and personal study by the motivated individual. There are 22 short chapters of very gradually increasing difficulty, suitable for teaching in 20-30 minute time frames. The subtitle for this book is "A complete system for understanding the fretboard".This book is focused on understanding the fretboard and excels at making the reader understand getting intimate with the fretboard.I like that this book doesn't pretend to be anything it is not; no promises of cool licks, hot riffs, blazing shredding etc.The book deals with THEORY and does a pretty good job of explaining it well. Like all good instructional treatises, this isn't a book you read in a day or even week or even a month. You use it, bit by bit, come back to old bits again, read new material, go back to old material etc.It's a book you keep handy on your bookshelf, a ready friend when you need one.It's a bit dry, though, be warned. It's not a dummy's guide and doesn't treat you like an idiot. It'll teach you all you need to know how to play lead and rhythm without actually teaching you and licks or riffs. How about that?Overall, it's a good book that I'll be happy to recommend to anyone who wants to understand the guitar fretboard.

I've not yet this book for a year yet and it's literally reinventing me as a guitar player. I don't get nearly the time I'd like to practice/play so I need to make the most of it. I was initially self-taught and then did a private lessons for a few years prior to quitting due to health reasons. A few decades later the itch came back with a furry and I was determined not to squander it. I bought this book based on recommendations and am so glad I found it.The approach of this book assumes you're coming from nothing but motivation and the end looks darn scary to the likes of me, but I've seen nothing but steady forward progress that builds incrementally so that no step forward is too high to reach. The author has done an impeccable job of breaking down a complex subject and made it possible for anyone to learn. Some (most?) of music theory is so old that it often seems arcane and unnecessarily complex (or even wrong from a mathematical PoV). Yet it works and has stood the test of time... a LOT of time, so why fight it? I'm glad to finally be on the road that eliminates all the mystery. I can't imagine a learning approach any more straightforward that what's presented here. It's easy to understand and to skip parts that you might already know.

This is a very thorough book and with some of the best explanations and exercises I have encountered. The guitar itself requires time and effort to play it well. A student needs to know the laytout of the instrument, where the notes are and how they relate to each other. Then they can make sense of their warm-up exercises and scales. Soon chords and melody are not as daunting as they were when the student didn’t know where to go on the fretboard. The fretboard is a lot harder to understand than the piano, for example! I appreciate the 5-pattern approach to explanation over the CAGED method. Too many teachers start students with a song or a chord by saying put your index finger on the second string at the first fret, etc., instead of teaching the notes right away so he/she can say, “put your finger on C on the second string...or on the 5th string, or the 1st string, or 6th string, or the 3rd string...”. Get my drift? The Guitar Fretboard Workbook is not teaching technique but it will accelerate playing progress through thorough understanding of the guitar. Bravo for a book well structured!

I love this book! I have been playing the guitar for 37 years and never seen a book quite like this one. I have used Mel Bays 1-8 series, Frederick Noad, Hal Leonard, Leavitt Berkeley 1-3, Segovia and many other compilations. This book stands alone as a must have for any guitar player desiring to excel on the fretboard, play lead, tacets, licks, etc. Scales over chords is the basic theme here and the book teaches several methods for viewing the fretboard in different manners not taught by any other method I have seen. The author has you visualize the notes on the fretboard by drawing out relationships such as the 5 shapes method, the half-steps method (E-F & B-C) to name a couple. This is a must have for any serious guitarist!

I'm about 60% through the book and, so far, I think it is great. I think that focusing on the root shapes rather than chord shapes (CAGED system) is a better approach. Once you recognize the major scale patterns and know the root shapes, you can play any scale, anywhere on the fretboard. Pentatonic and minor scales can then be easily derived from within the major scale patterns. The exercises help to instill a solid understanding of the concepts. If you want to understand your guitar better and play up the neck, this is the book for you.

This book is absolutely what I've been looking for. I'm a conceptual guy, and I like explanations, not just instructions. The author says that he figured out that his students who learn the skills in this book do well. By going through the book and taking time on each topic, I feel I'm coming to understand the guitar. Hopefully this will let me feel comfortable and confident and be creative. I'm a beginner, and this is at the right level for me.

OMG I am currently on Chapter 7, and cannot help writing a good review on this book already. After so many guitar classes and $$ wasted and still don't have a complete understanding of the fretboard, this book really helps me understand all the bits of guitar fretboard theory in a systematic way. I am so thankful for the author to write up this book, it has helped me so much and I truly enjoy the `WOAH` moment in every single chapter, it's enlighning and now I have a much clearer goal what I should be working on to improve my understanding on all the notes on the fretboard.

I have colored many books, with black backgrounds and mandalas of all kinds. This book was different - and WONDERFUL. I have had this book a fairly short time, but keep going back to it. Black backgrounds make the colors really pop. The designs of these mandalas were great. I will need to search for other books she might have. Just a great book and wonderful designer. Thanks go to her!!

I like the designs and paper. My complaint is poor printing. Many of the pages have strip white at right margin. here are some I colored with markers

What I love about this Mandalas coloring book is the pictures aren't OVER detailed.Most of the adult coloring books I've had, you almost need a magnifying glass just to see all of the details, which are beautiful of course, but too much for these old eyes to see! LolAlso, I love the black background. It makes the colors in the pictures POP!Lastly, even though the pages feel thick, your Sharpies will bleed through. So make sure you put something behind the page you are coloring.

Paper thin for markers.

I originally purchased this book to use to take breaks from my books of “several days/week to complete pages” books! Sometimes you just want that sense of completion in less than a week.. ;-)It then very quickly became one of my favourite books for using when reviewing different sets of pencils.... the pages have spaces that are large enough to show how a pencil shades, blends, etc., but small enough to get several done in a day, & out on the group’s site for reviews... a lovely book all around, for colourist of any age, or skill level!

I am really enjoying this book.

I got this to do some coloring in after work for stress relief (instead of eating!). I’ve been using gel pens to color. Haven't noticed any ghosting, but even if there was the pages are single sided, so there is no design on the back to be ruined. I’d recommend, the black adds to it, especially with gel pens.

I love coloring mandalas and I color fast. I also love when there is a black background and the lines are not too small. This coloring book is my favorite on so far and will be buying again to have fun coloring all over again. Not a waste of money at all.

For the job I work as chaotic as it is, this book brings me to a state of peacefulness and calm.When I do feel myself slipping away from troubles or problems in life, reading a few chapters always brings me back to who I am.It's a great read by the Zen Master Thich a hat Hanh that shows us how much more important life is if we just take a second to breathe rather become caught up in the rush we live in today.

Thich Nhat Hanh's "Being Peace" is an excellent book. It contains a collection of teachings written by Nhat Hanh that cover typical Buddhist topics including (but not limited to) peace, consciousness, interbeing, meditation, love, understanding, and mindfulness. The wisdom found throughout the book has the potential to awaken readers that have an open mind. There is something about his writing style that makes for easy reading and his message seems to be absorbed subconsciously in my mind. Having read other books by Nhat Hanh, I am happy to continue learning from his teachings and look forward to exploring more of his works.

Opening a book by Thich Nhat Hanh, one expects to find wisdom and guidance regarding practices like breathing, meditation, and mindfulness; and they are in this book. But there is more. For example, in the first chapter the author writes about smiling, namely that being happy and showing it by smiling is a way of sharing peace. Lessons I drew from the book included: 1) "The Three Gems of Buddhism" - a) Buddha - the Enlightened One, b) Dharma - the way of understanding, and c) the Sangha - the community that lives in awareness and harmony; 2) the closeness of understanding and love in Dharma teaching, and 3) the teaching that humans are composed of 5 aggregates: Form, Feelings, Perceptions, Mental Formations, and Consciousness. Approaching the book from a Christian perspective, one of the difficult subjects for me was the author's understanding of reincarnation and recalling past existences. One of the emphases which I appreciated was that of the interrelatedness of human beings. We take care of/love others by doing the same for ourselves. If I am happy, it is more likely that you are happy, and vice versa. Likewise, if I am wrong, you may suffer, and vice versa. Beyond these truths, there is the matter that everything is interrelated. These ideas are just a sample of the richness to be found in "Being Peace." I recommend it to anyone interested in "being peace" and moving further along the Buddhist path.

The Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh ("Thich" is his title, not his name), also known to his students as "Thay," has written more than 60 books in English alone. This slim volume, BEING PEACE, is comprised of a series of Zen teachings presented in the United States over the years. It is very much a book directed toward Americans.Thay's position in BEING PEACE is that we cannot HAVE peace until we ARE peace; in short, we must actualize peace through our lives. It serves as a very practical guide - it offers great insight into how one might live mindfully in the world (not that a monastery isn't part of the world, of course, but this book can guide those of us who have children, hold non-monastery vocations, interact regularly with "mainstream" culture...). I suspect that *Being Peace* might be of greatest interest to those readers with just a bit of background reading in Buddhism; and at once, it might also serve as a gentle introduction to Buddhist philosophy and practice; finally, it's worth reading even if one has no interest in Buddhism - it may, in its own right, offer a path to greater compassion, understanding, and happiness.

Among Thich Nhat Hanh's many books, Being Peace stands out as accessible, inspirational, and highly informative of his approach toward Zen as a life practice. This audio CD consists of the original lectures on which his book was based. If you love the book, and you certainly should, you will love the audio recording even more, since it captures the inimitable tone of his speaking voice that is itself spiritually inspiring and even holy.
