Confession: I was hugely disappointed that four out of the six Amazon First choices this month were “Women’s Fiction.” Choice five was marketed as a Superheroes, Action & Adventure book, or a Vigilante Justice story about some woman employed in comics – ‘Yeah, right, my eyes rolled at such a prospect. The sixth? A memoir of a football player and his family. Although I often DO read and Enjoy women’s fiction, I do enjoy having the choice for crime (true and imaginary) stories that are marketed to guys. So, I ordered the one title that I just knew I would enjoy lambasting with all my wisdom and experience…Okay, I’m striving for a little humor, so don’t take me too literal, please.Such a fresh take and so hip I feel like I shed fifteen years off my 66. Really, a book I just KNEW I would abhor is so curmudgeonly humorous I found myself wanting more…Okay, I was so surprised by how much fun it was to read this snarky humorous take on contemporary society and our tendency to stereotype, that I wanted to love this novel. There WERE indeed aspects that I loved as I read along. But…BLUSH FACTOR: No worries here. Only the mildest cussing and no graphic sex. This surprised me beyond belief, because modern fiction by and about women seems always intent to outdo Elmore Leonard and Stephen King in language. Don’t jump to conclusions. I love Leonard and SK.THE WRITING & EDITING: Great page turner than is written in a fast-moving, crisp language that, with some authors comes across as choppy. With Molin, though, it works smoothly with just minimal transition phrases.POV: First person.STAND-ALONE OR CLIFFHANGER ENDING? Stand-alone.CHARACTER OR PLOT-BASED? A blend of both. It’s a different slant on romance combined with Action-Adventure. Romantic Comedy combined with Action-Adventure.BOTTOM LINEI want to rate it five stars but the character development would need to be enhanced. What I mean is, the author did well with a tome of less than 300 pages, but another hundred could have fleshed out these characters so much more. What we get is a story that is immediately eye-catching and fun, but, in retrospect, is not life-changing. Sort of like a candy bar hits that certain spot but, after a few minutes…Four stars out of five.I am striving to produce reviews that help you find books that you want, or avoid books that you wish to avoid. Sassy heroines have been employed over and over by authors, some to great effect while others provoke various levels of nausea. Author Meghan Scott Molin uses it effectively, granting readers a refreshing view of her lead character MG.The plot was good, and the initial meeting between MG and the potential male attraction Detective Matteo happened innocently and never felt forced. The interaction between the two of them, as well as the incidents in the office with her co-workers, firmly establishes MG’s character as well as putting enough life into the other people that I felt quite happy that I wasn’t reading yet another book filled with one-dimensional puppets. With the story told in first person POV, readers receive inventive descriptions of the action as well as the other characters.I was a good way into the book when I realized that the author was managing to tell her story without even the hint of an f-bomb crossing the pages. Not even a vulgarity or mild epithet was seen or heard. What I expected to be a smart, chic woman able to hold her own when the boys start talking like they’re in the locker room was actually more of a cozy mystery. Rather than a disappointment, it was a breath of fresh air. Even though there were a few instances in the last part of the book, they were way, way down the vulgarity index, and many could have made the cut in a Disney movie.I’m not sure why this book was billed as “geek fiction,” other than the fact that MG works for a comic book publishing company. While that is a detail that fits in as part of the plot, the writing shines as Ms. Molin relates the story with a flair not seen in many books today. The book starts off being a lot of fun, which continued all the way to the last page. Five stars.

I didn’t enjoy reading this book, unfortunately. The main character felt overly cliched, and very heavy handed on “nerd culture” and gender issues right of the bat which wasn’t quite what I anticipated and certainly not so forwardly. I just didn’t enjoy that aspect but for those who do, more power to you! The main character was simply unlikeable for her arrogance and holier-than-thou attitude, growing irate when stereotyped but playing judge with others. Too irritated to continue past the first few pages and really disappointed her overbearing personality got in the way of a great concept.

An amazingly detailed and comprehensive paddling atlas that lives up to its broad title. There is a very concise introduction to state geology that defines the various regions that comprise the chapters. As a non-native, I was enthralled by the discovery of the central springs! I visited three of the sites and found all the information accurate. What it may lack in engaging prose it more than makes up for in practicality and usefulness: not just a listing of nice routes, but the nitty-gritty of how to get in and out and where you can rent gear if you aren't bringing your own.

Good book for paddlers not familiar with Florida canoe/kayak trails. Also, a nice book for those who are from Florida and want an addition to their reference books.

This book is comprehensive and thorough in its descriptions of Florida rivers. It is an excellent planning tool and makes it easy to compare different possible trips.

I used this book to try to plan out a kayak camping trip mainly, and to just find some places to kayak on day trips secondarily.

This review strictly pertains to the Kindle version. I was looking forward to learning from this book. However, the formatting is so bad in the Kindle version it's almost unreadable. Everything just sort of runs together with very poor use of spacing. I would not recommend the Kindle version.

I’ve read plenty of technical code books and “Beginning DAX with Power BI” ranks as one of the best. To often, giant books with multiple authors are dry and a challenge to stay awake to, let alone get excited about. Phil’s approach in this book is refreshing and engaging. His style and use of many different practical examples keeps the reader engaged and wanting to move on to the next section. I particularly enjoyed the small author notes dropped in after some of the examples that warn of common mistakes or provide a tidbit of extra value based on Phil’s many years of experience. Those types of little additions add a lot of value for beginners. In addition, the chapters on “Context” and “Debugging and Optimization” were great to see as those are key elements for all users to understand and pay attention to.This book teaches DAX in an approachable and well written way that leads the user to join along and work through the examples. DAX is certainly a language best learned while doing, rather than memorizing, and this book does a great job of supporting that method. I will certainly be recommending this book to all new users that want a great jump start and solid base in DAX. It will certainly help in expanding their capabilities and drive them towards producing better insights in their reporting efforts in Power BI.

Please be aware, that this review is a copy of my review on the german amazon website. Unfortunately this review does not show up here, but this book deserves better.This is the first book I read about DAX (and I have read a lot) that provides a concise and first of all an easy to read introduction into the mysterious FILTER CONTEXT. It also covers the latest development of DAX by comparing different functions that have surfaced over time and are doing more or less all the same, summarizing a table, but Phil explains their own twists. Phil provides great examples when to use which of the summarizing functions like SUMMARIZE, SUMMARIZECOLUMNS, or GROUPBY.Another great chapter is about JOINS, emphasizing the importance of relationships.Personally I consider myself an expert in the field of DAX, but I found some new ideas and approaches reading this book.This will be the recommendation in all my DAX trainings.It was a fun read!

This is the best guide to DAX that I have seen in the market. It is more comprehensive and up-to-date than anything I have seen thus far. The organization of the topics are logical and spot-on. When I give presentations that introduce DAX, it is exactly the order that I follow. It is a joy to see someone give Context an entire chapter in a book as I feel it is the key topic that one needs to understand when learning DAX and something that sets DAX apart from other languages. There is a great chapter on Dates but the highlights for me were the Debugging and Optimizing DAX chapter and the Practical DAX chapter. Great information in those chapters. And, the treatment/explanation and examples of the GENERATE function is first rate. I've never understood how to use that function efficiently until now. Overall, Phil seems to have been able to strike a great balance between a book that covers all of the fundamentals but is also written very much for the practical DAX user. There are so many nuggets of wisdom presented in this book I can already see that it is going to be my go to reference when I get stuck. Now if only Phil could replicate this book for Power Query (M) code I'd have every reference book I'd ever need for Power BI!

For anyone learning Power BI, regardless of background, one of the most challenging aspects is the DAX language.Beginning DAX with Power BI is an excellent resource for all Power BI users, whether complete beginners or more advanced.Phil Seamark presents DAX in all its glory, from basic definitions and examples to some quite advanced applications. The examples provided clearly reflect a wealth of experience as a Power BI practitioner, and will be relevant to a wide range of Power BI users.The core concepts are covered excellently, including the data model, context and filtering. There are some great examples of table functions and emphasis on the power of DAX as a query language.I was also pleased to see coverage of such practical topics as debugging & optimizing, code formatting and variables!While I consider myself reasonably experienced with DAX, I gleaned a number of useful techniques from this book, and found myself repeatedly saying "aha" as I read through. I will be referring to this book for years to come!

The only complaint I has is that this book as "Beginning" in the title which may keep some people from learning some of the great topics Phil covers here that are not available other places. You know from the first few pages that this is going to be a good book as one of the inventors of DAX was the technical reviewer, so do yourself a favor and pick this book up.

This is not my favorite Dr. Seuss book but our grandson seems to like it. He has other Dr. Seuss books that I like better.

I read this book to my children when we acquired our first, but not long lasting, pet fish. They loved it and always had a copy of it nearby, just in case they needed the comfort it brought to them. I bought this copy for my grandson who I just visited, book in hand, and he commanded me to read it multiple times during the weekend. I'm sure the book will outlast his fish.

Charming illustrations and humorous story. Not endlessly rereadable but still good. Great for making transition to slightly longer stories.

This was one of my favorite books as a child and got it for my children because they are always fighting over who gets to feed the fish. My 3 year old son asks me to read it over and over and over.

The book was listed as "very good" instead I got a copy with the last three pages completely torn and missing about 1/3 of the page. Pages were dirty and the binding was falling apart. Very old damaged book that should never have been listed as "very good" quality. Disappointed that the seller would send this book out, it should have gone right into the garbage where I'm putting it now.

My two year old loves reading this book with me. He has his own goldfish and this book has taught him not to feed it too much.

My 3 year old got an aquarium and this book for Christmas and he loves it! We've been reading it every night. It will be a good starter book for him to read when he's learning.

I NEED ANOTHER BOOK.It feels like it’s been ages since I read a faerie book, and a good one at that. Though I’m sure I’ve read some since then, the only ones that come to mind are Holly Black’s Tithe/Modern Faerie Tales series and Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely series (both of which are some of my favorite books in general).I am absolutely adding An Enchantment of Ravens to that list!Let’s start with the magic. Well, sort of magic. In this world, it’s called Craft, only usable by humans. Think of talents like painting, writing, cooking, sewing, and so on. These humans work their Craft in Whimsy where the Fair Folk come to visit them and purchase their Craft in exchange for enchantments. I loved the idea of Craft. It just felt fresh and new and while I’m sure it’s been done before, not in any book I’ve read and I thought it was a great addition to the inclusion of the Fair Folk in the book.Isobel’s Craft is portrait painting, once again making for a stand-out element. She’s strong-willed and loyal to her family, willing to do what it takes to keep them safe. You won’t see Isobel putting up with any nonsense. Her practical nature (even when it appears at more impractical times) made her endearing and I just loved her character in general.Then there’s Rook. Ugh, can someone just wrap him in a warm blanket and give him a hug? This absolutely over-the-top prince is such a sweetheart and you can’t help but love him. He’s stubborn and him and Isobel end up at odds often enough but who can stay mad at that face? I think what worked really well for him was the way Rogerson treated his interaction with “human” things (like emotions). He’s just so raw and genuine about everything. I need more Rook!Together, they journeyed through the Fair Folk courts, on the run. I didn’t find their journey itself anything remarkable but I found I didn’t care either. I read for the characters who I loved almost instantly, and the writing which is very well executed and will immediately suck you in.My only complaint (other than I simply didn’t want it to end) was that the ending itself felt a TAD rushed. But that might just be me and my new obsession with this book.Honestly, I am in DESPERATE NEED of some sort of a sequel or companion novel or ANYTHING (I’d take word scraps on a napkin if I could). This book is all sorts of perfect for fans who’ve been missing that classic fae style with a new twist. You won’t be able to get enough of An Enchantment of Ravens.I’m just all sorts of gushing right now, y’all. This book just rocked my YA fantasy list and if you don’t have it on your to-read shelf then there’s something wrong so get on that! Can’t wait for more by this author!

I was thrilled to finally get my hands on Margaret Rogerson’s debut novel, An Enchantment of Ravens. Often described as the “perfect fall read,” it truly is, with lush, magical scenery and an adventure reminiscent of a fairy tale. I probably could have read it in a day or two, but it was such a pleasure that I tried to make it last as long as possible, delaying the inevitable end. I found myself wishing for more books with these characters, but according to Rogerson, this book was written as a standalone. (If she changes her mind, though, I’ll take any glimpse of Whimsy and the fairylands that I can get!)I love the world Rogerson has created, from the peculiar town of Whimsy to the alluring and dangerous fairylands. Fans of Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series may find the fairy courts in this book — spring, summer, fall, and winter — reminiscent of those described in her trilogy. But I found the depiction of the fair ones to be more dangerous and haunting. While they are, in some ways, similar to fey found in other YA books, Rogerson shows that their legendary beauty is built on a lie, and their love of mischief and trickery runs deep. I found Isobel to be a likeable, realistic protagonist, with conflicted emotions and a soul-deep sense of duty to her family. And where do I begin with Rook? In some ways, he fits the archetype of the rude, stubborn love interest who eventually grows to love his equally-stubborn companion. But it was such a delight to see his interactions with Isobel change and deepen. He’s definitely book boyfriend material.There were parts of the book that felt a little predictable. It’s not difficult to imagine how it ends before it even happens. But again, much like a fairy tale, that predictability comes with the story: a handsome fairy prince whisks a lovely human girl away, and during their journey, they fall in love. I still thoroughly enjoyed this book and the way it went about telling that story. While the concept is something we’ve seen before, the writing is sharp and engaging. I also had a few lingering questions at the end of the book, but despite wanting answers, I can appreciate it when an author leaves some details to the reader’s imagination.Overall, I think this was a strong debut, and it really is a wonderful book to curl up with. Make some tea, grab a cozy blanket, and lose yourself in the forests with Isobel and Rook.
