There are three things I look for in a good pop science book. I want to be informed, I want to be entertained and I don't want to be bewildered. My favorite science writers include Paul Davies, Michio Kaku and Brian Greene because they are generally enlightening and highly readable. Anil Ananthaswarmy is a writer with background in science but you can tell that writing is his primary skill. When I read the title I expected a book about the technological edges of physics but instead the book is about the extreme locations on the globe that scientists will journey to in order to pursue some of the grandest experiments ever undertaken. The subtitle of the book pretty much explains this as well as the product description so any misunderstanding was my own fault. Unlike the books by the authors above this book focuses on the moments when the chalkboard theories get put to the test, when the rubber meets the road.The writer travels to some of the most unforgiving locations on the planet and thanks to some talented writing brings the reader along. From the frigged northern and southern poles to the barren lands of South Africa, from Lake Bailkal in Siberia to deep beneath the earth the author has to endure some of the most brutal conditions imaginable. What all of these locations have in common is their unique environmental conditions that assist with some of the most challenging searches ever undertaken. Most of the science here involves the quest for exotic particles including anti-matter, neutrinos, WIMP's and evidence for the existence of dark matter. I'm not going to pretend that I'm someone who is particularly interested in exotic particles, dark matter or the shape of the universe. I love physics but these topics have never really sparked my interest. However the focus of the book here isn't on the science, it's on the people and the amazing risks and sacrifices they are willing to take in the quest for knowledge. Anil tells of a group of explorers in Antarctica who died while trying to bring back geological samples. They were found frozen with 30 pounds of rocks. If they had simply ditched the rocks they may have made it but instead science took priority over life. The author is in no way advocating this behavior but it takes this kind of mindset to drive a person to locations where the temperature can drop 50 degrees below zero or into the deepest, darkest mines in search of a possibly non existent particle.It was fascinating to read about the effort it took to transport massive telescope lenses into the most inaccessible places possible where any bump could damage millions of damage of equipment or digging out the mammoth caverns needed for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. In the chapter on the LHC the author spends considerable amount of time on the colossal engineering feet involved in creating a collider that can create energies not seen since the early moments of the universe and temperatures colder than anything nature can produce. The people who take on these Herculean efforts are generally driven by nothing more than the unquenchable thirst for knowledge. The experiments are unprecedented and as such ingenuity is a must. Imagine trying to dig down several kilometers into the ice in the South Pole. The solution was to melt through the ice with an incredible blast of hot water literally possessing the power of a freight engine. You can think of it as like Mythbusters if Mythbusters had millions and sometimes billions of dollars to work with. Physics has been in the doldrums for decades and it's very likely that one of these remote places might well lead to the next big advance. Although this wasn't the book I was hoping for it's very well done and gives the reader a whole new glimpse into science. I'm giving this one top marks.

Anil and his editor Amanda Cook, cobbled together an amazing book, combining science, cultural, physical and anthropological geography, geology, travel to exotic and revered scientific locations on earth, then providing glimpses into both deep space and quantum mechanics. (This sentence is a microcosm of much of the style of the book.)I reveled in some amazingly poetic prose as he described the locations that housed or supported an amazing array of telescopes located in places few care to venture. Fortunately for us, he went to those often hostile places and spent as much time writing on the geographies mentioned above, as the hard-core science that motivated their existence.It’s a complex story. It includes acronyms and names enough to dissuade a reader from continuing, but then he slips in something fascinating about places or an Ideas, both here on earth and into the multiverse.He is careful to include a multitude of scientists and support personnel, past and present, who labor in difficult places without much recognition or human comfort. It’s a Who’s Who of science, and very few receive awards or devices, theories or systems named for them, all do their part to bring knowledge to we who glibly receive it from our easy chairs.If nothing else resonates with the reader, the glossaries and indices at the end of the book can be used for further study and clarification.Four stars only reflect my inability to understand large sections of the scientific prose, not the author’s vast knowledge or broad-based education, which is quite stunning.I found that having Google Earth and Wikipedia close by enabled me to stop and see many of the places and images contained in his writing. Pictures in the text or at the end of the book would have made this far more enjoyable.If one reads only what they can easily understand, this will be well worth their investment in time. A copy of this book lives on my nightstand. Well, except when it's in my purse or in my carry-on for a trip. No, I am not a Catholic. In fact, I'm not even a Christian. But Sr. Macrina Widerkehr's book based on the "Hours" has become a daily part of my life. I have never felt comfortable with "canned prayer", so the typical morning, afternoon and evening prayers and pre-written blessings of Judaism left me cold. But this book gave me a different method for recognizing the divine in my daily life. While I cannot say I observe every pause, every day, I've noticed that more and more, the ideas presented in each section have become a part of my day as a stop for a minute or so and breathe. I even incorporated the concept of keeping a vigil recently, when my Aunt, who lived many states away, was on the brink of crossing over. She did pass in the morning, but having kept a prayerful, aware vigil helped more than I expected. I would recommend this book for anyone, of any religion, if they want to keep hours and days from flying by unnoticed.

I bought this as a gift for someone who has used The Planetary Pilgrim book daily. I thought she might like the option of the hours. I have carried this little book with me for many years through good and bad times. I like the little hardback but it wasn't available when I bought this gift.

This Lent I decided I was going to attempt to add the Divine Office to my daily prayers. This book is such a gentle introduction to the practice of giving prayer its proper place in our lives. Sister Wiederkehr presents such a well-rounded approach to the age-old tradition, incorporating quotations from many faiths, and even appropriate secular sources--that I feel it would be invaluable for anyone exploring their relationship with God. Our schedules in this modern world so often get in the way of that relationship, and we tend to look at prayer as an obligation for a very brief part of our busy schedules. This wonderful book presents it as an incredible gift, and teaches how a few minutes--several times in those busy schedules--can calm and ground us.

This book is a true delight, as is its author, Sr. Macrina Wiederkehr. This book gives new meaning and simplicity to the ancient prayer of the Christian Church known as the Divine Office. Macrina calls us to briefly pause and regain our mindfulness, recalling that the different hours of each day mirror the seasons of life. Though a Catholic Benedictine nun, Macrina pulls from various mystical traditions and poetry of the world to highlight the seven themes and presents the material in an easily accessible manner.I was blessed to have been able to attend two-day retreat led by Sr. Macrina this past weekend which highlighted this book. She is the delightful and truly authentic person this book leads you to imagine. I purchased a hard copy in addition to the Kindle version (for Sr. Macrina to sign for me). I am planning to add tabs/bookmarks to both so I can easily turn to the hours, especially while at work, as a reminder for me to reconnect with the present moment and the heart of God.

While the structure of this work is around the monastic "hours" of prayer, this should not be off-putting for those unfamiliar with this style of prayer. There is a wealth of information and ideas on how to practice the "sacred pause" during one's day in order to become aware of the present moment and of Divine presence in all those moments. One must also be willing to PRACTICE pausing in order for it to become a regular and natural occurrence. Ah, there is the rub--it requires intention and effort to grow one's spirituality. Therefore I have been praying for this grace. Yesterday while shoveling an autumn Colorado snow, an overburdened tree relieved her burden of snow on top of my head. Normally I would have gotten angry (at what, I'm not sure). After reading this book and trying to practice more faithfully the "sacred pause," I found my reaction different. The thought came to me that the tree needed my attention, so I shook some more branches to relieve her burden and I heard her "thank" me. The thought also came that I needed to pay more mindful attention to what I was doing beyond getting the chore done. I was breathing in refreshing air and getting exercise. I was aware of all the leaves that had been released, surrendering to the natural call to 'let go.' What did I need to surrender, to let go? That question has remained with me. A very different outcome than simply relief at getting a chore done! Purchase this book if you are willing to invest the effort; it is a gold mine of support for those efforts. Otherwise, you will likely continue to complain about the busyness or "mundaness" of your life leaving no room for nurturing your heart-soul. Personally, complaining has rarely changed anything in my life. This book will.

Macrina Wiederkehr makes a strong case for the value of slowing down long enough to become truly aware of the present moment. As a Benedictine immersed in the liturgical celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, she makes this treasure accessible for those who live outside a monastery. Augmenting her own reflections and poems, she includes a wide variety of quotes, classic and contemporary, from others who also appreciate living awake and aware. She writes simply and with depth of insight that invites more than one reading.

I enjoyed Macrina's previous books, and was blessed to attend a retreat which Macrina led. This book intrigued me because in her Foreword she writes about a retreat in Leakey, Texas. I have been to this place, and could hardly wait to read on. My spirit gets fed by Macrina's writings. She touches me deeply with her poetry. She inspires me to continue to grow through silence, prayer and trusting the mystery. Here is a sentence which touched me, "When I rise in the middle of the night, my prayer is simply one of waiting in silence, waiting in darkness, listening with love".

As advertised. Great road map to get you going

Exact;y what I expected, would recommend to others.

This was not helpful at all, and will not help you get a good grade in legal writing. Most of it is common-sense.2 stars because it's decently priced, but skip this one.

Not very helpful for me personally; however, may be helpful for someone else. For law students and others preparing for the Bar, it might be somewhat superficial.

I have to admit I love Sargent's work. Sure he traveled in effete circles, didn't starve to produce his art and didn't cut off any appendages in a fit of passion. But he was a heck of a painter and whether one views his portraits, landscapes, watercolors or oils you see talent born of years of practice. Living a childhood as a nomad traveling Europe with his parents, taught to paint watercolors following his mother's example and encouragement, he developed into a phenomenon of talent. And this book exposes the reader to a selection of those skills. Only complaint is that in an effort to present the entire works of Sargent through a series of books, no one book by the authors will have all of Sargent's most famous works. This one is very good however, for Sargent's portraits included are among his best.If you like Sargest and dream of having all the books by these authors, this is a good one to start with.

This volume on Sargent is a big one, with beautiful, high quality reproductions showing a variety of wonderful and interesting paintings. A surprising number of the paintings are unfinished; they are early works of a man learning his craft. For a practicing artist, that makes them especially interesting and even encouraging. One can see Sargent trying many things and learning from them, which is what any student of painting does. This is a very interesting book.

Adding this volume to my library on John Singer Sargent now almost completes the most important books covering this outstanding artist of the past. This volume covers many paintings that have not been touched by the other books in my collection. I would recommend it to those that wish to discover this man's talents that covered landscapes and seascapes. The quality of the printing and size of the images allows the viewer to get into the paintings. It is a over the top book. George M. Postmus

The color reproductions are awesome. This books is a collection of Sargent's less known work which is refreshing. Some oils are not as polished as the more well known work which helps to show his technique in early stages---a plus to serious professionals and students. To me, this book provided a wealth of visual clues to understanding his thought process and technical principles. The writing, however, is the typical stuff used to fill most coffee table books. No insight whatsoever into Sargent's painting principles, tonal procedures or color palette. The author obviously knows little in that regard but there is so much information out there the text could have been more illuminating. Buy it for the reproduction quality and awesome collection of works. Worth every penny in that regard.

i was very pleasantly surprised to see so many Sargent paintigs and drawings i had never seen before. Some quite obscure images in color - many studies and sketches - things that interest other artists and Sargent fans - I have not read much of the content yet but the little I have read was very interesting, although not of great use to artists in that there is not much description of Sargents working methods (although there was some) - but this is usually the case with monographs - much history but not much instruction. So as artists we must learn mainly from the paintings - which fortunately are very well reproduced in this volume.

An outstanding and thoroughly documented compilation. The photographic reproductions are very faithful. The page quality is excellent and the book is well bound.

I recently discovered the art of John Singer Sargent and fell in love with his work! I wanted to discover more of what he has done. This book gave me the excitement to want more that he has completed over the years. It gives an overview and detailed account of his life and how it influenced his work. As an artist myself, I was highly inspired! This book offered exactly what it said it would, but because it is just one volume, it leaves me wanting to purchase the rest of the collection!
