And perhaps his most important.Yes, it's about how to end your books so readers are satisfied. That's important, if they're going to read your next one. And maybe tell their friends about it. And leave glowing reviews.Bell delivers what he promises, and delves into several kinds of story endings, not just "happily ever afters," but twist endings and tragic endings, and more.And, in my opinion, there's a major bonus in "The Last Fifty Pages...." It's the OTHER bits Bell includes - overviews of some of his other books (like "Super Structure" and "Write Your Novel from the Middle"). Those tips can radically improve your current book, too.I've been writing fiction for more years than I'd like to admit. And, I have far too many unfinished books on my hard drive, because they lost their spark, even with the best, most meticulous plotting I could muster. I kept thinking, "I guess I'm not a very good writer."I'm glad I didn't quit."The Last Fifty Pages..." was exactly what I've needed. It's (finally) clued me into what was missing. Why so many of my story ideas fell flat, once I started writing them. Why I lost interest halfway through. And I'd give this book 15 stars if the system would allow it.Failed and faltering stories can be fixed. The answer is in the pages of this book. And, it's simpler than I'd ever expected.Make your stories memorable and wonderful. Put a smile on your readers' faces. This book will show you how.

This is my first JSB book and it likely won't be my lasts. I've been hung up on my memoir's ending for months now, scribbling and erasing and retyping only to never be fully satisfied with where and how things end. I love that this kindle book focuses on this exact subject. I appreciate that the author didn't fatten his page count with page after page of other author's examples (as I so often see in the kindle bookstore). JSB offered down to earth and easy to follow content on what to do and not do when ending your book. It is more suited toward fiction writers, but even non-fiction/memoir folks like myself can find use in it.Two thumbs up. Now, someone stop me before I wipe the dust off my Amazon credit card and buy the rest of Bell's ebooks on writing tips.

The author has a very engaging teaching style and a wicked sense of humor. I loved how he used examples of novel endings to support his advice. It really made this book a joy to read. Whether you're writing your first book or your fiftieth, The Last Fifty Pages will change how you look at endings, setting ablaze a fire that propels your writing to the next level (and there's always a next level), forcing you to push harder to create the most memorable ending you've ever written. Don't miss this one, writers. It's pure gold!

I've read a lot of books by James Scott Bell, I believe he is the best at sharing information to make writers the best authors possible. There were two places in the book that made it well worth the minor cost of the book and allowed me to gleam insights to make my current work in progress better.I think the book started slow and un-focused, but if you get past chapter three you will find nuggets of gold. He does use a lot of the same stories and insights from previous books he's written, but did a good job taking the same stories and digging deeper into the ending. What makes an ending stronger, when to show a protagonist's victory or defeat.I've had a couple of readers of my first book tell me it had a weak ending, so I'm looking forward to utilizing the concepts James included in his book to make my next novel even better than the first.

I always learn so much with each James Scott Bell book I read. There are so many writing instructors out there, but Bell seems to speak the language that makes sense to me and I always walk away from his books with practical and applicable techniques for my next project to make my writing better and more sellable. This book really helped me think through some possibilities for writing a dynamic ending to my next novel. I especially like the idea of aiming for a target ending but also having the freedom to change that ending when I get there. I enjoy reading JSB’s craft books. I learn a lot from them, and they don’t put me to sleep.

This book has useful tips on how to end a book with a bang, but it is also very, very funny. Funny and useful. What more could you want?

I love these, and so do my kids. I am a biology professor (and so is my hubby). We are always looking for ideas for engaging not only our students but to share with pre-service teachers in our classes. We also have kids (8-13 y) on which we like to try out lots of stuff. These books are great. They are simple - not likely for an on-grade middle schooler or high schooler - but engaging, and creatively written. They would be great warm up exercises. My kids were glued to them when they came. Highly recommended.

Dorothy L. Sayers is one the most brilliant writers of the twentieth century. Her work spanned a number of genres, from detective novels, to religious stage productions, radio dramas, apologetic essays, and translations of Dante’s Inferno and Purgatorio that are still in print.Sayers is less popular than C. S. Lewis, in part, I think, because he wrote children’s literature that draws new generations of readers more readily into his camp. Sayers was, however, no less witty and intriguing a figure as Lewis.In fact, it is encouraging that more of Sayers’ work seems to be returning to print. There are a number of her essays that are hard to find, but which politely dismember opposing arguments in terms that make the power of her logic perfectly clear. Her detective novels, which are now somewhat dated period literature, are good stories in addition to their subtle arguments for truth. Christians, especially evangelical Christians, need a good dose of Dorothy L. Sayers.The latest release in the Plough Publishing series celebrating the gospel in a range of writers is The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers. This anthology curates selections from all genres in chapters focused on particular topics like judgment, equality, creativity, and the cross. In some cases, entire essays are reprinted, like her powerful and satirical essay, “The Dogma is the Drama.” In other cases, the editor has selected a few paragraphs from a novel, or a scene from a play.With the growing interest in Sayers studies, this is a timely and helpful volume. “The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers” (Plough, 2018) is enigmatic, even cryptic at best. She was a writer of detective novels which seemingly had nothing to do with religion, yet she viewed her essays, critical writings and poetry as reflections of the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. She suggests that the popularity of detective novels among clergy and others exists for this very reason, and likes the idea that “your sin will find you out!”I laughed a lot as I read “The Gospel in Dorothy L. Sayers” published by Plough, because, as a retired clergyman I had come to some of the same conclusions about religion in my generation as she did in hers considering she was born in 1893. It is said that she never emphasized the differences between Greek Orthodox, Roman Catholic or Anglo Catholics of which her father was a clergyman in the Church of England, but rather sought out their similarities and that these were evident or implicit in her writings. Her works were compared to those of C. S. Lewis who also wrote “A Panegyric for Dorothy L. Sayers,” a word I had to look up (with thanks to Wikipedia.) Having spent a number of years on the staffs of two state Councils of Churches, her insights brought back many memories as I drifted in and out of all things Protestant and even Roman Catholic during those years following Vatican II. Criticism comes easily from those perspectives.So- what she says to us today has hardly evaporated into history. I recently served my mother's death transition using this book. The experience was profound and I felt that it served both of us greatly. I was able to tell her everything I needed to so she could feel free to let go and it helped me to be able to release her onto her journey. I'm so grateful for the wisdom in this book. Even if you don't agree with or understand all of the essays or believe in all the statements, I think this book offers a unique perspective not found anywhere else.Reading Easy Death book and looking back at the profound process we participated in is such a Gift. It frees one up to be able to release someone and it releases the dying person to move on in their journey. Without this, one is either consoling themselves or just coping with their grief or transferring their attachment to someone or something else without any knowledge of the Greater Process - which I believe is necessary for any true sanity in life or death.Take what you can make use of, and leave the rest. See what holds true in your own experience. Try to be open to the ideas and try it out yourself. See if it helps. If you already have your own strong religious belief system, then perhaps this isn't the best book for you. If you can remain open to the wisdom and spiritual guidance the book offers then so be it.You can read excerpts of the book at the Easy Death book website - this may help you decide. The book content is good, but too heavy and not convenient to read or to carry.

Insightful and challenging!

One particular essay by this author 'The paradox of reincarnation' drew me to this book. I have been influenced by the critique of the author by the writings of William Patrick Patterson "Adi Da Samrfaj: Realised or and Deluded. so I have not felt a great interest in much of it. I have had in the past the opinion that Adi Da was a truly realised being. I now feel that some of his behaviour was not that of such a person. However the above mentioned essay I believe was the as true an accounto the subject as one is likely to find anywhere.

I thought this was going to be a serious book on Death and Dying. The endorsements Looked Fantastic. But, instead what I have is a Book with a lot of Words capitalized (I have no idea why) written by guy who claims to be a God-man. I wish I had noticed before I bought it that there hadn't been a review of the book on Amazon in about a Year and a Half. If you think the capitalized words in this paragraph are distracting, you have some idea of what it's like to Try to Read This BookI'm surprised by the people who endorsed this book. Honestly, I'm only a couple of chapters into it. But, thumbing through it and seeing all the endorsements for Adi Da Samraj's other books, how I can contribute to his religion and the many, many pictures of him, it's just creeping me out so much that I'm sure I won't finish it. Why so many pictures of a man who claims to have conquered ego? I thought I should write this review to warn others who might buy this looking for a serious discussion of death and dying.There does seem to be some interesting wisdom and insights in the book. So, I will try to muddle through it. But, I think many (most?) will find the constant references to Adi Da Samraj's divinity by his "devotees" and the promotion of his religion extremely distracting.

I agree with the other reviewer that this book did have a very cultish slant and personally I just don't buy into the whole Adidam philosophy.The author creeps me out. And I don't get his thing of capitalizing the "M" in the word "My" when refering to himself. I find it sad that there are lost souls out there (ie, his "devotees") who are convinced that only "by means of My Avataric Diven Spiritual Grace" (pg 159)- can they be Divinely Liberated.I would say it ranks right about up there with packing a suitcase, putting on some Nikes and waiting to hitch a ride on a comet.

Easy Death is a how-to manual for easeful, conscious transition from this life into whatever comes next. Initially, I was reluctant to read it, presumably due to resistance/denial/distaste for the taboo subject that we must all confront at some point. But I quickly found that it is much more than a death and dying manual. It is a manual for true life; the fullest life possible, informed by constant communion with divine reality. Adi Da clearly reveals how the conscious embrace of death is the key to liberation and ecstatic living. It is a marvellous book. I am very pleased I read it, and grateful for the work and sacrifice made by Adi Da to provide this liberating wisdom.The other marvel of the book is stories from devotees about the death of loved ones and how Adi Da’s teaching and blessing interventions provided profound spiritual help that enabled acceptance of tragedy, and even liberation in the face of life’s most difficult experience.It is worth reading if you think you may die one day, and in the meantime want to live as fully as possible.There are some negative comments here on Amazon about Adi Da and this book. For over 40 years I have carefully examined and participated in the community of Adi Da’s devotees in the skeptical attitude of a college trained engineer and a serious student of spiritual practice. My report is that Adi Da and his teaching is authentic. Anyone who views him and his work with an open mind and heart will enjoy profound liberating power operating in their life.
